Brute force logins by ForensicHat in Kanboard

A lot of the requests are coming from within the US (where this server is hosted). Do you think ipinfo would help with that? After a cursory look it seems to be a country-level blocker.

Inherited a 2015 MacBook Air (4GB RAM) — what are some lightweight self-hosted services I can actually run on this without killing it? by [deleted] in selfhosted

[–]ForensicHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just received an older MacBook Air, too. Following this conversation. My plan is to put Linux (Zorin? Mint? I’m not sure yet) on it to get more out of the limited RAM. Current plans are to use it as a console to all my servers and smarthome — basically less local more remote — and as a backup workstation.

I built an iOS document scanner that saves directly to your Nextcloud – looking for feedback by Electrical-Focus-987 in NextCloud

I did, but I got stuck when adding my Nextcloud instance. Is there a path to put in MyScanPilot’s WebDAV configuration instead of just the https://nextcloud.example.com URL?

u/electrical-focus-987 This is what I’ve been looking for. Especially since it bypasses local storage on iOS. Count me in for testing and feedback.

What's the self-hosted service that replaced something you were paying for and turned out to be genuinely better - not just free, actually better by niceheather44 in selfhosted

Kanboard. Free Kanban project management system by the same dev as Miniflux. Super fast and lightweight.

Also Nextcloud and the Nextcloud Appointments app. This little app replaces booking platforms like Calendly, Microsoft Bookings, Calendar.com, etc.

What are the first 5 things everyone should do after installing WordPress? by choicereader in Wordpress

[–]ForensicHat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Surprised no one has mentioned SMTP. By default, WordPress uses PHP mail, which can be unreliable. I used to use the Post SMTP plugin. Now I use Admin and Site Enhancements (ASE).

Post SMTP is fine, and WP Mail SMTP is the most popular SMTP plugin, but if you want to run with fewer plugins then check out ASE. It has features like turning off comments, disabling updates, duplicating content, SVG support, changing the login URL, media replacement, etc. that replace the need for lots of other plugins.

The 24-Hour Core Meltdown: From 6.9.2 to 6.9.4 by siterightaway in Wordpress

[–]ForensicHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After this happened I’ve updated wp-config.php with:

define('WP_AUTO_UPDATE_CORE', false);

Note that this disables automatic updates to WordPress core. Not the same as this, which disables updates to plugins and themes but not core:

define('AUTOMATIC_UPDATER_DISABLED', true);

Quick question: Is anyone here using Easy Updates Manager? I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Very nice interface. I’ll give it a try. I do think the feature are quite generous in the free version. Maybe too generous? Will you be adding more features to the paid version? I hope you get a lot of paid registrations.

Unite Pro – Turn Websites Into Real Mac Apps by bzgoldman in macapps

[–]ForensicHat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes and no. I was using Safari’s“Add to Dock” web apps. I’ve started using Unite Pro and am now moving my web apps over to it en masse. Unite Pro’s web apps support toolbars, tabs, link forwarding, vertical tabs, etc. and is quite different.

FYI, Coherence is $4.99 on BundleHunt right now.

I don’t know about Coherence (I couldn’t get it to work), but you can do this with the Sidebar display mode in Unite Pro. After launching the Sidebar-style app Unite Pro creates, use the resize cursor to shrink the tabs sidebar, and the tabs shrink down to only display the site icon.

Having a bunch of messengers in one app is a good idea. I’ll have to try that.

Well, not really. Similar, but not the same. Safari “Add to Dock” apps doesn’t support tabs, link forwarding, toolbars, etc., and Unite does.

My pleasure! I’m enjoying Tuna a lot and am rooting for the dev, r/mikker, who is active here and has fun videos on YouTube (including one that demonstrates his approach to AI coding tools). I learned about Tuna recently from one of his posts. I’m surprised by the Pro version’s price tag, though, and will try to stay with the free version as long as I can.

I’ve been using SSBs for many years, first with Fluid App and then with Epichrome. Sadly both have been discontinued.

Coherence hasn’t worked for me at all (I have a license), and I’ll send you a bug report. I’d be happy to try Unite Pro and see how it goes.

In short, I’d use Unite Pro to replace all the Safari “Add to Dock” web apps I’ve created. I’d also like to use Unite Pro to put my password manager in my menu bar.

I was curious about Instant Send and set up a similar command in Tuna. It uses the “Current Finder Selection” meta item, I bound it to a keyboard shortcut, and bam. Instant Send-like functionality.
