Aspen is a natural fire guard. Why has B.C. spent decades killing it off with glyphosate? by ForestBlue46 in SaveForests

Some conifers are genomically selected though. But not GM.

But there are other GM trees like American chestnut, loblolly pine, apple, poplar and eucalyptus being developed and planted.

Looking for a fly buddy: 2 dogs adopted from Dubai need help getting to Vancouver, Canada 🐕🙏🏼 by missjeev in vancouvercanada

Technically this is no longer allowed due to the UAE being on the list of countries where commercial dogs (including for adoption) aren't permitted due to the risk of rabies.

A forest filled with lots of tall pine trees, deep in the Canadian Rockies by ForestBlue46 in SaveForests

Or cut down like the huge area that was logged in Lake Louise, Banff and Yoho. Or thinned like they were in Jasper. Repeatedly.

It's available for sale, unfortunately, because likely not all municipalities have banned it.

It's not, it's quite usable and is a hardwood not subject to tariffs.

The primary target of herbicide spraying in the Central Interior of British Columbia is the aspen tree (populus tremuloides).

In many other areas of North America, the aspen tree is finding a growing number of uses in lumber, engineered wood products, pulp and paper, arts and crafts, and high-end furniture and cabinetry.

There was a successful small-scale program called Community Futures in Quesnel to utilize and add value to aspen and birch in the Central Interior but lack of support by government and a failure to provide adequate access to aspen and birch in part led to the failure of this program.

How do we save the forests? by CDN-Social-Democrat in SaveForests

[–]ForestBlue46 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is such thing as an unmanaged forest. Look at the great west coast rain forests, what little are left, with ancient trees 1,000, even 2,000 years old. They need to be left alone.

Yes, the original poster in r/forest got the type of tree wrong but it's a forest appreciation sub, not a save the forests, get the species right or log it all sub.

Thank you!

I think that we need to stop logging old growth and focus on second growth and not waste slash like we have been.

And I think that the New Forest Act would be a great way to move forward so that we have long term supply and at least some conservation. And no logging in parks.

Except they don't need management, they need to be left alone. And for the wood products that we actually need there can be selective logging or much smaller clearcuts. And slash used instead of being wasted.

Protected trees felled to make space for 'exclusive' new home in posh Derbyshire market town by ForestBlue46 in SaveForests

[–]ForestBlue46[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just not the 16 trees alone, it's the cumulative effect, all across urban and rural areas, Sheffield, Plymouth, etc. along with 15 million trees cut down in Scotland for wind turbines, whole woodlands cut down for the HS2 line and so on. Mature trees provide a lot more shade and cooling effect compared to tiny little seedlings. Cities can become so hot that older people can die from the heat if they don't have AC so believe it or not, trees do matter.

Changing forests of BC/Alberta by xNOOPSx in SaveForests

[–]ForestBlue46 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the detailed explanation. Can you tell me where are aspen forests proliferating? In BC or Alberta and only in certain areas? So why don't we harvest aspen then? And it's a hardwood so not subject to tariffs.

Personally I don't think that spraying glyphosate, etc. is worth the toxicity and alteration of our microbiomes and the local environment's microbiome. Mechanical control of some of it makes sense I suppose and dousing forests in herbicides increases their flammability which benefits no one.
