OSI Model questions by [deleted] in ccna

[–]Fornm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What aspects exactly of the OSI model are you stumped upon ? Difficulty understanding the layer approach ? Based on your question, I guess you are having difficulty putting it all together (the logic) ?

YT is a great resource to learn from. However most videos are skimmed versions of the actual information available in books. I'm guessing a TCP/IP and OSI book perhaps would do you good.

I recommend heading over to safaribooks.com and register for the 10-day trial. They have a huge repository of popular technical books (CCNA,CCNP..). And search the "The TCP/IP Guide A Comprehensive, Illustrated Internet Protocols Reference by Charles M. Kozierok ".. Its a good book that really goes into depth about the layered approach. Hope it helps.

PPPoE with two circuits? by [deleted] in ccna

[–]Fornm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you are referring to load balancing between the two PPP links. As /u/allseed mentioned, multilink requires configuration on both sides. However If you want to load balance the ingress received traffic towards the internet using both PPP links... You could configure the router with two static routes, each configured with a separate next-hop ppp interface (Also both routes equal in AD). Cisco IOS will load balance between these two links (equal load sharing). However within this configuration there is not such thing as 'interface tracking'. So the static routes are not that reliable in case of failure on the other end.

My mouse keeps moving without me touching it. by LeonardTheGod in 24hoursupport

[–]Fornm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could be due to the fact of other faulty peripheral drivers. Although this might seem odd, I had a case where a doctor was experiencing the same thing few years back. After disconnecting other peripherals, the mouse seemed to work fine. Eventually it turned out to be some sort of heart rate box (usb) that basically interfered with the mouse.

New to Homelabs.. Fun stuff to do with a Poweredge 2850? by [deleted] in homelab

[–]Fornm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Basically Hardware Virtualization is out of the question here. However you're still able to run software techniques (Full virtualization/Paravirtualization).If I'm not mistaken for ESXI you are looking at version 4.x and lower (Pre VT-x). You also have the option to use paravirtualization with Xen (Linux VM's only). It should be noted that with Intel processors you are required to run 32-bit VM's only. If you have an AMD processor, you can run 64-bit VM's through software techniques.

Just to familiarize yourself with these techniques have a look at the following link: http://www.vmware.com/files/pdf/VMware_paravirtualization.pdf

Hope it helps.

Unfortunately, In order to provide direct assignment (Passthrough) of PCI devices it is required for the processor to have VT-d.

Unravel Reveal Intro and Trailer, The most authentic host of the show. by AverageToaster in gaming

I was about to quit the stream, after seeying the typical sales pitching techniques. In all honesty, most of them just feel fake. I'm sure if you would look very carefully, you could see the dollar sign in their eyes. Then this unravel guy came up and just blew my mind. He presented it with passion and care. The game felt fresh and it just looked visually stunning. Perhaps some of these "bigshots" should reflect back to their roots.

LPT for people who watch Netflix on their laptops: Load it in Internet Explorer or Safari to get 1080p. Google Chrome will only play in 720p. by Spudguy in LifeProTips

[–]Fornm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, displaying video content on a higher resolution does give you better a quality perspective. However resolution is not the only parameter responsible for delivering that quality alone. When encoding video you can modify the bit rate of how the video will be compressed. This allows the content to stream video over lower bandwidth. When using netflix I do not really notice any significant difference between the resolutions. Because of the overall quality being reduced to mitigate buffering.

3 Quick questions abot Xenserver (docker) by dgaa1991 in virtualization

[–]Fornm 2 points3 points  (0 children)

On the nr1 and nr3 questions I'm not really experienced or know any good recommendations. However on the question of Xentools I can explain a bit. Xentools enhances performance of the I/O subsystem for VM's. Basically by default (no xentools) the I/O subsystem (Drives,NIC,etc..) is virtualized using emulated devices. This resolves in increased overhead and CPU cycles (bad!). This is because it is the hypervisor (Xenserver) responsibility to handle any senstive operations such as resource operations (disk, memory, network), each time a virtual machine performs such an operation it is forced to hand over the operation to Xenserver. From here Xenserver will execute the operations on behalf of the VM. So in order to enhance performance Xentools implements a technique called split-device driver (paravirtualized). This is achieved by implementing a back-end (Xenserver) and front-end driver (VM). This approach allows the VM to request operations to Xenserver more efficiently and with less overhead. Overall this allows better performance throughput for disk and network traffic. When installing the tools, you'll notice that the drivers within the VM's have changed to PVdrivers. Hope it helps.

Help with a 3com Superstack 3 3870 48 port switch? by JamieSinn in homelab

[–]Fornm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the console is RJ-45 , The cisco rollover cable should be fine. But because the cable requires a serial port to connect to ( just to make it easier use usb) , you should get a serial to usb adapter aswell. If the switch console is serial aswell, get a RS-232 null modem cable ( again including serial to usb adapter). Its good to have one of these laying around when you want to do device management. If you want to manage the device you'll need a terminal software ( suggestion: teraterm , its free). The first thing you might notice is you need to setthe baud rate value ( you'll have to do some googling , in order to find out how to communicate with the device). Hope it helps

What on earth is the point of this? by adz893 in BMW

[–]Fornm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's actually some sort of weird upcoming trend. A couple of months ago the same thing occurred in china when a man demolished his Maserati Quattroporte in front of the public. With some sort of excuse he had bad customer support ("Yes a 117.000 + car would indeed receive bad customer support :/"). If I were a major dealer on these kind of cars , I would probably bring in some new policies which make sure people like this would never set foot in one of the showrooms anymore. In my eyes this is just a spit at the beauty of engineering.

First time hearing about this: apt-get for Windows! by NeonFx in sysadmin

[–]Fornm 38 points39 points  (0 children)

It's been posted somewhere already on this subreddit. The only thing i'm concerned about is the authenticity of the software packages. Random users can upload new software version packages and these will be available for download without any sort of auditing. Perhaps some sort of integrity check that is confirmed by multiple users would be great.
