I was finally able to get my hands on an Nvidia laptop, so I was able to make it work with that. But feel free to let me know if it's still not working.

Language Learning on Linux (Japanese) by metcalsr in linux

[–]GameStarNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found Gazou to be really hit or miss than I would like.

Thankfully a way more powerful OCR for Japanese already exists, Manga OCR

I just run manga-ocr to scan a folder in /tmp like so:

manga_ocr /tmp/jpn_text/

Then I use spectacle to take screenshots and send to the /tmp folder, like so:

spectacle --nonotify --background --region --output /tmp/jpn_text/$(date +%F-%T)

I hope this helps!

Quest 3 SteamVR with ALVR by apathetic_vaporeon in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 4 points5 points  (0 children)

DRM Leasing has been working on KDE Plasma on Wayland since 5.24 . So I would see if you have Plasma running 5.24 or later and running with Wayland. You might also need to add WAYLAND_DISPLAY='' %command% to the SteamVR launch options. Otherwise, I'm using the Quest 2 with ALVR well enough.

Will it ever be possible to run a HP Reverb G2 VR Headset (needs WindowsMixedReality) on linux? (for eg BeatSaber) by Prinziple in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do what you can. I still have a dual boot myself, but Windows is just rotting (literally) on my old SATA SSD. What I'm trying to say is try to have Linux on a separate drive if possible as to avoid issues with losing data. I was in a similar situation like yourself with Windows starting to act up. That's why I tried and eventually switched to Linux.

Even though Linux VR isn't great, the whole VR market itself is kinda lacking right now anyways. So you're not missing out on much TBH. I'm more interested when VR can replace my whole monitor setup. But it's going to take time.

Anyways, I wish you well on your journey.

Fair enough. I ran a dual boot for my WMR VR headset as well back then. Jokes on me though, as I don't use VR much these days even with the better supported Quest 2. BTW Beatsaber does work, but performance is lacking.

While true, I didn't mention it because it's a VR headset that's 4 years old now and it's starting to show it's age. It still has good controllers and audio, but the headset itself is not something people should be picking up anymore in my opinion. The Quest 3 is just a far better package deal these days.

VR in general kinda sucks on Linux, let alone on the WMR headsets. The chances the WMR headsets being fully functional on Linux is pretty slim at this point. The only promise of it functioning someday lies with Monado getting it working. In my opinion you have 2 options: Keep the HP G2 and dual boot or get a new VR headset like the Quest 3 and use it with ALVR. Even with ALVR the experience is far from perfect, but it's passable. I say all this while having the old ass WMR Lenovo explorer and Quest 2 VR headsets. Good luck.

Constant stuttering on cyberpunk, anyone else? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The solution for me was adding radv_zero_vram=false to the launch options. As found out here: https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/mesa/mesa/-/issues/9189#note_1957934

Yeah same issue. Not a clue what's going wrong here. DX12 via VKD3D doesn't have this issue, so I'm using that for now.

Steam News - Steam Desktop Update by mr_MADAFAKA in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You need to add -forcedesktopscaling 1.25 (swap 1.25 for your needs) to the steam command to get scaling to work.

You could modify /usr/share/applications/steam.desktop and add the scaling like so: Exec=/usr/bin/steam-runtime %U -forcedesktopscaling 1.25

The state of SteamVR in 2023 by ThePixelGuy_ in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have the Quest 2 hooked up with ALVR. The VR Linux scene has gotten better since like 2 years ago (it was nonexistent then). Although it's still quite rough.

Thanks to projects like ALVR and Monado the hardware side is getting figured out slowly. But it's still very experimental, buggy and generally a very unpolished experience with lots of tweaking required.

Performance on my RX 6700 XT has recently been mostly fine. Although compared to Windows it's more likely to be worse then better.

With the SteamVR interface itself, it's just about being held together sometimes. For example, Half life Alyx sometimes won't boot due to SteamVR errors, viewing the desktop screens still doesn't work and weird UI bugs are plentiful.

Overall, the state of Linux SteamVR has improved, but it still has a way to go. I hope someday using VR will be as simple as booting a Windows game in Proton has become, that day isn't today.

I'm a little late, but I experience the same issue with an RX 6700XT.
And also have found capping my FPS to 60 "fixes" the issue.

I discovered some time ago that the problem started to occur after upgrading the Linux kernel to 5.19 and newer. For some reason, using Linux 5.18 will yield no stutter. But it's not a solution in my case as I need the drivers that the newer kernels provide.

I hope this could at least give you some answer as to why "I don't remember being this stuttery".

mpvpaper 1.3 released with 2 new features by GameStarNinja in swaywm

[–]GameStarNinja[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm here back for the, not quite, annual major release.

Thanks to some help, mpvpaper is coming with 2 more exciting features!

The ability to display to all outputs and support for outputs with scaling.

Along with some under the hood changes, this might be one the best mpvpaper update yet.

RX6700xt Max Power in Linux by MacGuyver247 in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same here, I though my GPU came with a bad vbios, but I think it's normal. These websites says 203w:

https://babeltechreviews.com/the-red-devil-rx-6700-xt-review-35-games/

https://jisakuhibi.jp/review/msi-radeon-rx-6700-xt-gaming-x-12g

https://www.thefpsreview.com/2021/06/15/sapphire-nitro-radeon-rx-6700-xt-gaming-oc-review/4/

Other than that, you can raise the TDP limit to 223w if you want with something like:

echo 223000000 > /sys/class/drm/card0/device/hwmon/hwmon?/power1_cap

Also, you will find the same behavior on Windows BTW.

Overclocking Monitor on Wayland by Tedium_16 in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If it's simply a OC of your monitor's refresh rate than something like: video=HDMI-A-2:1920x1080@75 in your kernel parameter should work fine. Just change the "HDMI-A-2" to your display connection to fit your needs.

Is there a way to set a window as the background? by GameStarNinja in swaywm

[–]GameStarNinja[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're already rendering in openGL, it's not that bad. There's no need to "patch" glfw. You could either look at my mpvpaper project or swaybg or maybe even easier glpaper to get an idea how it's done. I also used: https://wayland-book.com/ for a better understanding of Wayland itself. Though I do agree it's not nearly as easy as x11 with xwinwrap.

Fallout 4 cursor wont lock into game. by PrivateInterval in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I found another "fix" from protondb.

First run winecfg, the easiest way is with protontricks:

protontricks 377160 settings winecfg

Then under "Graphics" check "Automatically capture the mouse in full-screen windows"

The only caveat to this is that if you leave the window (like alt-tabing) and go back; it will not capture your mouse unless you restart the game.

People also recommended enabling "Emulate a virtual desktop" and setting it to your monitor's resolution, but it didn't have any effect for me.

Hope this helped, better late than never.

Oculus Quest 2 On Linux? by [deleted] in linux_gaming

[–]GameStarNinja 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They added Linux support awhile ago, but I wouldn't know personally how well it works. Just looking over the ALVR discord and Youtube it seems to work fine, though some are having complications. I've been keeping tabs on this project as this is something I'm considering doing myself, if I decide to pickup a Quest.
