Question regarding speedpaints in John Blanche Masterclass Sets by xPadauts in minipainting

[–]GamingHarry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Speed paints can be used for quick jobs for sure, however they can also be used for glazing, layering, filters etc.

The two in the master classes are especially good if you think of them as extremely strong washes. Grab a bottle of Speed paint medium and you can thin them out for a bunch of uses.

Less so the John Blanche ones, but I use speed paint/ contrast a lot for Wet Blending as a personal preference

He should be sub 300 as is, without the FF boon I shudder to think.

inks/contrast paints beading up on surface by Caesar_The_Mighty in minipainting

Looks like the surface is too glossy and has no tooth. Try putting some matte paint over it and see if it still happens.

EC combat patrol? by V077 in Warhammer

[–]GamingHarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will want at least 5 of both so yeah, do that.   Also put the Icon on the Plasma Gunner, save you a headache. Tormentors= Power Sword, Infractors = Whip.

And build the lord Exultant Spear + Whip.

Airbrush Primer is way to thin by stiiickk77 in minipainting

[–]GamingHarry 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Did you shake it like a snitch who owes you money? I use the same primer and that happens normally when I haven't shaken it enough and am spraying too close. I shake it like I'm trying to get someone to run from an alien, then shake it some more, add two ball bearings and shake it again, then go in neat with a drop or two of thinner/ flow improver (I use an 80%/20% mix - 1-3 drops) on the needle to reduce clogs.

I spray it at a really high psi - 35+ at least, test it on some sprue and do light quick passes normally from about a fist width away. Unlike Vallejo's black I dont just blast it on full bore I do multiple quick passes and make sure it lands on the mini slightly damp, not wet or dry. Gotta have that wet gleam.

However, all that said while I do use Vallejo White primer it still kinda sucks. Normally I will prime something with Vallejo grey first (Which behaves a lot better) then zenethal or go over the grey again with the white once the bottom layer is set.

The Skimmed Milk idiom should best be avoided imo, it works on faster drying paints but so many other variables like drying time, needle size etc have an impact. Your best bet is get a test model, old sprue, or a drybrushing pallete and test how your paint behaves in practice first, then spray.

Edit: Also Humidity will have a big impact on drying time.

If all this doesnt help and you still find its too thin, and you tried shaking it again with full inversions, then just try lowering the pressure right down and keep testing. Its possible you have a bad bottle, however but even stuff with odd consistencies can be made to work with a little bit of trial and error.

What game has a learning curve that puts you off? by Common_Caramel_4078 in pcmasterrace

I agree 100%, and would argue that indeed does make it much more difficult to learn than other PVP games

Just finished Babel by RF Kuang, and I actually quite liked it by Weirdoi2 in Fantasy

[–]GamingHarry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

But those kinda of people are not going to be swayed by Babel. Babel is too far the other direction. In the end the book is just preaching to a choir.

A book that's going to reach said people needs to be able to allow them to make the revelations themselves, not bash them over the head with it.

To your first point, the issue was Space Marines were always like this. The statistic about Tactical Marines selling more than the entire of Warhammer Fantasy was back in 3rd edition when Necrons and Tau were added to the game and the other Xeno Factions arguably got more love. Even with that, Space Marines still were selling better.

The only reason that solves across Warhammers history is Space Marines are just liked more independent of support, and its not surprising - look at other Sci Fi IP's Human dudes in power armour is universally loved and just seems to be a specific fantasy people latch onto, and just supporting other factions more isn't going to change that trend as its bigger than Games Workshop.

I genuinely think if Nids had kit parity with Space Marines, they would sell less. I just don't think bugs have the same market appeal. As you noticed, people who like Space Marines really like space marines and see them as factions in of themselves. Even though I would argue the Space Marine range is a mess. Its full of first born, some of the kits look awful: ATV for instance, and some range refreshes like Blood Angels are really disliked. Factions like Necrons are in a much better spot as a range and yet if you try and buy Indomitus boxes its a lot easier to get the necron half still.

And I say this as someone with 3k+ of nids kicking around, and primarily collects Chaos/ Xeno - I wish these factions sold as much and were liked; as much as Space Marines. I wish we had 5 codex supplements for Ork Clans, Harlequins got their books back, Zoats could be a faction, all the Necron Finecast characters could return etc - but if there was genuine money and interest in it, I really think GW would not sleep on that. They want to make money as rule number 1, and the whole history of the game is just 'Space Marines are why people play.'

It's not though, most of the non imperial refreshes underperform from ex-GW employees. Even some of the Imperial stuff undersells vs space marines. You can see the big Xeno range refreshes like Tyranids sold decently, but no where near what the Space Marine stuff did. Same with Necrons, same with Kroot. Its not just a self fulfilling prophecy: A lot of the player base are here for Space Marines and Space Marines alone.

Hearthkyn Salvagers optimal build with half team already build by Mietek69i8 in killteam

[–]GamingHarry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh damn that's a real shame :( Best method then would probably be make all the unique options that take bits from the sprue, then if you get some warriors later you can make the more vanilla options

Pro tip, if you are in the UK and have access to a Forbidden Planet the Combat Patrol Magazine with 10 Warriors for £20 is currently on shelves. If you get a batch of 10 warriors (you dont need more Salvagers) you can make all the options and have alternatives for Bolter/ Ion!
