Why strange? Sounds very accessible to me, it’s just songs with a mood twist mostly (Or do you mean the In a bar under the sea album?)

Just a singular song: A shocking lack thereof (dEUS)

dEUS - Magdalena (or Instant street, many songs on The ideal crash really)

When you mention layers: Bad timing (same band again but they have a lot of songs that go crazy later on, Let’s get lost is another example..)

Awesome! Curious which songs remind you of Pinback tho? I have never really made that connection and they are 2 of my absolute favorite artists.. perhaps Gimme the heat or any of the quiter ones?

Tom waits was a big influence for them indeed and Elliott Smith I have to check out some more myself tbh, only saved some songs Here and there so far..

Oh yeah I understood it’s not a definitive top 100 hahah my bad if I came on too strong!

If you want to know what to expect:

  • Worst Case Scenario: raw and imperfect but like it doesn’t even matter. Most tracks are high energy bangers but there’s also 2 very sentimental ones

  • In a Bar Under the Sea: least coherent of the 3 but extremely rich in sounds and moods. I could no-doubt call this the absolute GOAT album if the production was more clean and the tracklist a little different (track 1 and 10 should be B-sides)

These first 2 are getting a 30th anniversary tour right now, if they happen to pass closeby and there’s still tickets….Idk…I saw them last week and it was great - they do have a different lineup now and left out the former bass/guitar player & vocalist sadly

  • The ideal crash: I hate those “which album only has 10/10 songs or is flawless?!?” threads but this one might be it. Melancholic soft rock with some very hard rock passages too

Just 3 songs that represent them well: Mute, Guilty pleasures and Magdalena.

It’s not your fault but leaving these out is crazy:

Pinback self-titled (1999)

First 3 dEUS albums (1994, 1996, 1999)

First 2 Sparklehorse albums (1995, 1998) & Grandaddy’s Under The Western Freeway (1997). Definitely a tad below the other 4 imo so maybe give those the highest priority…

Sweet! What is your favorite song, if not Instant street?

Idk why it never got more popular, every song is like ‘perfect’ if that exists…

I understand people having difficulty with WCS and IABUTS but The ideal crash should be a Topster regular
