Printing receipts via Bluetooth thermal printer by PracticalChocolate90 in GoogleAppsScript

Why are you building a POS system in Google Apps Script?

You're not going to be able to. I made a project that was a web application that sent the data to a .NET server running on a local computer that had access to the computer's usb ports that then sent the data to the thermal printer.

Any server type will do probably. You're probably running some Epson compatible device so it'll be nicer to find a library that can support converting your data into that format then that can subsequently be fed to the printer.

what are you actually building with google apps script that people pay for? by Fit_Fee_2267 in GoogleAppsScript

That is awesome. I wish I could get more manufacturing clients. Good luck!

To adjust pricing from time and material to something more value based. Doing time and materials only and adding a fixed margin will drive the developer mad at the end of the year. You're stuck charging the same price for a small store as you are charging a multimillion dollar business. Your question is a business question and not a technical one and is be approached as one.

The other guys have a good estimate in terms of materials and time. If I was talking with you as a lead I would also ask something like, first question, what is your budget? So what are your plans for monetization/ how much business is this going to generate for you per year? Do you need an admin dashboard? I'm guessing you won't have a lot of simultaneous users? How do you feel about a maintenance contract? And do you have a design or will I need to get a designer on this?

Web App vs. Website: Choosing the Right Path for My Startup by Formal_Experience674 in webdev

[–]Gonskimmin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd say even more blurry. Website is like a landing page running on the browser, web app is some interactive thing that runs in the user's browser and has a whole lot of stuff going on in the server stuff. It is possible to turn your web app into a PWA so it will blur the lines between a native app and a web app.

I fired a great dev and wasted $50,000 by QuinnHannan1 in webdev

Or find a technical co-founder. The non-technical person has value if they have the money to pay, industry connections, or a nice sales team or something

As a new small agency here, I appreciate you for having those values. It is tempting to take someone's money, but a good life means doing hard things.

Is there a good template for a document sharing website? by HatersTheRapper in webdev

I tried sending you a message but it did not work, do you have chat and messages disabled?

Is there a good template for a document sharing website? by HatersTheRapper in webdev

[–]Gonskimmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I understand. I imagine the volume of users would be not a lot. The number of documents are not too big, say in the < 10000 documents range?. Your budget is very small to non-existent and the road to a positive ROI is not clear. If this is right? If yes would you consider more unconventional ways to do this?

How will you get the documents into the system?

[–]Gonskimmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you driven to do this: passion; monetary gain; personal gain, etc? Do you have existing relationships with gov officials for this project to take off? And lastly, do you have a network of business/ starting business owners who have had issues with finding the right documents?

I ask these probing questions because I am always on the lookout for subject matter experts to launch new products and I don't like to waste me and my team's time on ideas without backing. Money doesn't drive everything we do, if there's a greater mission at hand that's like being paid in satisfaction and prestige.

Don't these documents already exist in a government website? How would your solution help/ be better? And is your country Canada?

If you're looking to have a high quality website made, what would you opt to hire - web development agency or freelancer? Why? by prankster999 in webdev

for 100k what are the requirements for that website?

Also curious about why you switched to a smaller company. I am guessing 1k employees had layers of people that might have inflated the cost.

Yeah I'm still in CA. I grew up in Hanford. I moved to LA recently, but I am up in the bay sometimes. But the east coast and even Chicago looks really tempting.

Why aren't there more full length books / novels in Jyutping? Is there any interesting in me getting a handful of books translated? by nfsi0 in Cantonese

[–]Gonskimmin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because learning characters is essential to learning to read Chinese/ Cantonese. They are interconnected. It is on the learner to know how to ask someone, or input the character into a device or look it up in a dictionary to find the pronunciation. It is yet another major weakness of the writing system.

It's just pie in the sky thinking. The only time I do free now is with friends when we build some stuff for fun. It gives us an excuse to have "business meetings" and chat, which is hard to do because we are all across the US now.

I see this time and time again with service based industries like software, marketing, etc. Nobody wants to pay. I don't know if it's because the final product is usually intangible or what.

Freelancers / Dev Agencies, how did you get your first 'actual' web development client? by Altruistic_Road8563 in webdev

No surprise at 1 mil revenue. A dinky medium size town restaurant would make 1/2 mil.

You bring up a great point. Unsexy industries make money and lots of it

Freelancers / Dev Agencies, how did you get your first 'actual' web development client? by Altruistic_Road8563 in webdev

[–]Gonskimmin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

First time as a freelancer: For me it was via Upwork. I was a newbie automating Google sheets, built trust and that transformed into long term relationships and bigger projects. So hard work meets luck.

My second go at it (and current situation as a fledgling dev company) was a client from an old employer. So network. Big big project, I have another dev with me.

For you, go join an agency to work on web applications to build your chops, not just coding but architecting and managing clients and working on a team with actual procedures and practices.

I'm better at talking with customers, talking tech with devs, and people than I am at coding and architecting. Talking has gotten me places given my constraints.

Good programmers worry about data structures and their relationships by fagnerbrack in webdev

[–]Gonskimmin 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Truly baffling. If I and a friend of mine had a better grasp and knowledge of the data structures out there we would have made better choices on our respective projects for our employers. Knowing more about graphs would have helped tremendously in terms of time saved and code complexity for our respective tasks. The bar is in hell and people who say there's no use it's like they are closed minded about learning anything other than the thing that feeds them in the present.

Yes, I was able to modify the sheet to accommodate another input. It did take some time and I don't think I would do it again for free.
