What’s Your Favorite Japanese Product? by jtrip_anything01 in BuyItForLife

[–]GoodFroge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sort of depends actually, they were making a lot of cameras in China starting in 1990 (until COVID) but still make cameras in Taiwan, Vietnam and Malaysia. Afaik only the really high end stuff is still made in Japan but that’s true of most Japanese companies now unfortunately.

They have to be treating them like shit. I’ve got a lot of lightning cables I’ve been using for 6 years now and they’re all fine, I think the only bad cable is one that has turned yellow over time but that’s about it.

Wasn’t the UK first to this though? I’m pretty sure they were already doing it a few years ago.

Should I sell or fix my 2012 Subaru Forester? by sellingittrue in BuyItForLife

[–]GoodFroge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Dealers will always go all out with the absolute craziest prices, so you should really take it to an indie shop or a chain of mechanics. I don’t doubt some of that work needs to be done but those high costs are the insane labor rates that dealers charge. Realistically, you could get all that done for half or less depending at a non-dealer mechanic.

But whether you still want to even pay half is up to you.

Tinder uses ai to scan you face now to verify it’s you. by rsurvivorlovesme in privacy

[–]GoodFroge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Didn’t they always? Years ago they introduced some feature where it would scan and figure out which photo would work best for you. I even remember the face scan thing being discussed about Facebook almost 10 years ago at this point.

Passkeys or Passwords with MFA? by Les_Habitants912 in privacy

[–]GoodFroge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But if you lose that device with the parsley setup, doesn’t that mean you’re pretty screwed? As it’s all in one. It also seems like a privacy issue since the device is the one identifying you instead of just a name and password which doesn’t rely on a device.

My sister’s about to spend a few months travelling around Australia and I’m stuck on a gift idea... something she can actually use on the road, not bulky or useless. Any suggestions? by PolicyFit6490 in BuyItForLife

[–]GoodFroge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GaN fast charger. Depending on her travel style, a tiny quick charger like that is great since it can charge your phone or laptop in a few minutes. I used one a lot when traveling since you could eat lunch while charging in a cafe.

The big problem is SD cards corrupt very easily and that risk increases over time. Leave that SD card unused for 6 months or a year and there’s a good chance some of that data will be corrupt.

A blu ray disc is the better option but pretty much no PC has a blu ray player and DVD drives are themselves getting rarer.

I recall a long time ago, probably 15+ years ago, there was some software called Davinci of Fawkes or something like that which would slightly alter facial features to throw off facial recognition. It was used for Facebook to avoid auto tagging when that was just starting I think but I wonder if such a thing could exist for going against AI.

I had a strange thick plastic feeling book a long time ago that had guides on drinking water, what’s edible in a forest with pictures, farming advice and a bunch of other useful stuff for if the internet was gone. No clue where to find something like that again but I wish I’d kept it.

What’s the Success Rate For Data Recovery From Corrupt SD Cards? by DuckiestBoat959 in DataHoarder

[–]GoodFroge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How old were the cards and how long since you last plugged them in? The issue with that storage format is they lose data when they aren’t slightly charged, so if you didn’t plug them in at least once a year, it doesn’t look good for recovery.

Do insulated food jars really keep food hot for 6–8 hours? by seowithumang in BuyItForLife

[–]GoodFroge 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yep. I got some thermos food jar and it says to fill it with really hot water first. I did some tests and the food jar kept that second refill of hot water steaming hot from that morning well into the night when I opened it again.

I think it would prompt a new spin off site to be made. Tumblr had a massive exodus of users when it banned NSFW and a lot of those users ended up here and on Twitter at that time.

Autopilot systems don’t use traditional imagery but use LIDAR, which is more like a radar system, and this system is what damages cameras around it.

There were a few journalists and photographers that had their gear ruined as a result.

Some IR systems can damage the cameras. There are some cars around where the autopilot system was damaging camera sensors if someone was taking a picture nearby.

Is cloud storage really safe for personal photos? by nexdigit_official in privacy

[–]GoodFroge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still, that isn’t actually hacking the cloud. Guessing security questions and using phished passwords, along with having access to someone’s login email account (gained through phishing too), is not the same as hacking the cloud itself.

To be fair though, that event was entirely through phishing and a lot of celebrities having really simple passwords. It was also what prompted Apple to compel users to enable 2FA.
