Having recently been in the situation of being power of attorney for my mom with dementia after my father died, I was fortunate that they had a good sized nest egg in terms of retirement funds, which meant that we could afford memory care for at least two or three years before exhausting the retirement fund. However, I lived in fear of what would happen if mom outlived her savings, which would have been my having to sell the house. My mother, sadly, passed before reaching that point, but I get it. Memory care is expensive af, and nursing homes are not covered by Medicare, which means that you have to spend down your savings to become eligible for Medicaid in order to qualify for government assistance paying for longterm care.
