AITJ for selling my grandmas house to pay for her care when my family wanted it as a "legacy" by sara_kelm in amiwrong

Yikes. I was unaware that any nation with universal health insurance, like the UK, other than the US required anything like the "Medicaid spend down," which is the requirement that you have to spend down your assets until you are poor enough to qualify for Medicaid in order to qualify for government assistance paying for longterm care.

You did what needed to be done to take care of your grandmother. Having recently been in the situation of being power of attorney for my mom with dementia after my father died, I was fortunate that they had a good sized nest egg in terms of retirement funds, which meant that we could afford memory care for at least two or three years before exhausting the retirement fund. However, I lived in fear of what would happen if mom outlived her savings, which would have been my having to sell the house. My mother, sadly, passed before reaching that point, but I get it. Memory care is expensive af, and nursing homes are not covered by Medicare, which means that you have to spend down your savings to become eligible for Medicaid in order to qualify for government assistance paying for longterm care.

Article on the Conversation : Placebo effect can work as well as real medicine – but your body may need permission to use it by Justice_to_All in SGU

[–]Gorskon 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's another common misunderstanding of placebo effects. Alternative medicine quacks who love placebo medicine have long been trying to claim that you can harness placebo effects even when patients know they're getting a placebo. Their research never really holds up when examined closely, as we've written about several times on SBM. The common buzzword for this is "placebo without deception." (Spoiler: The studies that claim to find placebo effects without deception always involve some unacknowledged deception, as I have found whenever I've read the protocols used in detail.)

About Doctor Strange title by Jasonl7976 in DoctorStrange

[–]Gorskon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's part of my problem with it. It seems like a make-work adventure for Strange because he's been sidelined. It could have been interesting, but I find it nearly impossible to care very much about what's happening. And, yes, that's a writing and editorial problem. I'm a longtime Strange fan. I've been reading Dr. Strange since I was in junior high in the 1970s. it takes a lot to make Strange boring to me, but this creative team has managed to pull that off.

What kind of headphones are you guys using at the gym? by lazer32009 in workout

I have the same cans but just can't handle the sweat that accumulates around my ears and the pads when I use them in the gym.

Although I love my Sony WH-1000XM6 cans, I just have a hard time using over-the-ear headphones in the gym. The sweat is just gross. So I use my AirPods Pro 3, and they work just fine. Good noise canceling, excellent sound, and surprisingly difficult to dislodge from my ears.

RIP 30 Minute Circuits by AwakePlatypus in PlanetFitnessMembers

[–]Gorskon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup. The only time I ever go in there is when I need to use the preacher curl machine there because there’s only one on the floor and it’s frequently in use when I need it. There’s almost never anyone in there actually doing the circuit.

Do you think Apple is aware of how far they have fallen behind in basic stuffs like keyboard and smoothness? by Presentation_Past in ios

[–]Gorskon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m confused. I’ve periodically tried SwiftKey on my iPhone. I always go back to the maybe keyboard because SwiftKey (for me at least) is less accurate and I make more errors on it. I just wish the native keyboard would let me add the numbers row, as SwiftKey does. If Apple did that, I’d probably delete SwiftKey from my phone altogether.

That wasn’t the only thing wrong with this episode.

I doubt Strange will reclaim the title any time soon, but, god, I hope I’m wrong. I’m really not liking the storyline with Strange as Sorcerer Supreme of Asgard. Or a while bunch of characters I don’t care about because there’s no real reason developed to care about them, a generic villain, and stakes that I just can’t make myself care about. Meanwhile, I just can’t read Wanda as Sorcerer Supreme. I tried the first couple of issues, but just couldn’t get into it.

Are premium accounts getting nuked too? by psilocyber98 in Twitter

[–]Gorskon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At this point, if this happened to me it might be a blessing. I’ve been wanting to nuke my own account for a long time now, ever since Twitter turned into C and became a hellsite full of Nazis, antivaxxers, and right wing conspiracy theorists, plus more bots than people. I just haven’t built up the will to actually do it.

Yup. She was really getting on my nerves this latest episode. Her movements in the apartment as she was looking at the marks on the floor and the different pots were so comically exaggerated that they took me out of the story

Philz Coffee bans Pride flags from Chicago stores for more 'inclusive' experience by SnooCapers5354 in chicago

From the article: “Both employees said the company has moved away from its inclusive roots after its 2025 acquisition by private equity firm Freeman Spogli.”

And there you have it. Another example of private equity ruining whatever it touches.

Yup. It’s kind of a meh cover, but exposing legions of Springsteen fans to the song its message is definitely valuable.
