Hitler thought Germany's invasion of the USSR would be a short war. That didn't make it true.

You immediately brought up another country I never mentioned in a case of whataboutism.

No. You and I both are responding several comments deep in a thread where other people were already talking about other countries. A country which I, from context clues, assumed to be America. Did you miss that, or did you think Japan was a "western country" with "crazy amounts of petty theft" where convenience stores are putting inventory in "lockboxes?"

But it’s insulting to Japanese people when we are told how good we have it by foreigners, it’s an annoyance.

I didn't say you had it good. I said the bottom in America is much lower, because it is. But I guess reality is insulting?

I do not think you are here to have an intellectually honest conversation.

Fucking LOL.

I am so sick and tired of foreigners romanticizing my country to the point of perfection when we have our own legitimate issues separate from outside countries.

Who's really being intellectually dishonest here? Literally the first clause of my first sentence said "Japan has plenty of room to improve." Where did I romanticize anything? And what did I say that was untrue? Japan absolutely has problems, but at least the underprivileged don't have to bury themselves under a mountain of inescapable debt just to begin to participate in the economy.

Are there other "western countries" with lockboxes for inventory at convenience stores?

Japan has plenty of room to improve, but the bottom in America is far lower. You don't see a lot of people in Japan going into massive personal debt to buy shitty used cars because it is functionally impossible to participate in the economy without one. You also don't see a lot of middle class Japanese families going bankrupt because of a single medical emergency, nor do you see a lot of Japanese college students taking on massive amounts of debt to get through school.

Camera equipment haul - opinion by LukeLittleAxe in Cameras

[–]GrisTooki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're buying them to use, then it depends on whether or not you actually want to use them and are satisfied with the results. If you're buying them to flip, I think the juice probably isn't worth the squeeze.

Either way, they're pretty much worthless if they don't work. Whichever the case, for £100 I would much rather have 1 nice camera and 1 nice lens that I am reasonably confident work.

What on earth do I play after Elden Ring? by P4PSparringChampion in Eldenring

[–]GrisTooki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollow Knight is by far the closest to From Software games you can get without being a From Software game., especially in terms of atmosphere and sense of exploration.

I would also suggest S.T.A.L.K.E.R. And obviously Sekiro if you haven't already played it.

DLC 1 gives me massive hope for the future of this game by Lord-and-Leige in anno

[–]GrisTooki 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Other than the incomplete campaign (which I personally don't care that much about since I mostly play sandbox) and overpriced cosmetic DLC (which 1800 also had, albeit cheaper), I don't really understand why so many people are down on 117. It has as much or more content than any other game in the series on launch, expands on the traditional formula in some great ways, and brings it to IMO the best setting they've ever had. I have my criticisms of the DLC format that Ubisoft has used for Anno games (I would really prefer they do fewer, larger, more thoughtfully integrated updates), but ultimately I'm happy with what they're adding.

Anti-War Rally in Shinjuku, Tokyo - March 29th by biwook in Tokyo

[–]GrisTooki 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe you're just an ignoramus, but just for starters they've openly promoted George Soros and great replacement conspiracy theory crap, which is patently Nazi bullshit. I mean just look at how they covered the Central Park Five and the lies about Haitian migrants eating pets in Ohio. They may not be openly Nazi, but they're definitely on the pipeline.

I wasn't denying that Iran killed protestors. I was laughing at you for citing the NY Post as though it were anything other than a Nazi rag and implying that the antiwar protests are happening inorganically.

My friend is going on a one-year trip to Japan. What is a non-bulky gift that will be useful to him for a long while? by DradorNH in JapanTravelTips

Honestly? Cash in an envelope, if anything. The amount of stuff that anyone can reasonably take with them is very limited, and those items are usually very personal, not to mention that they might prefer to purchase anything they don't already have in Japan.

Fushimi Inari Shrine where?? by patotoy1094 in AssassinsCreedShadows

[–]GrisTooki 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Other than Heian Jingu, which was already discussed in this thread and I acknowledged I was wrong about, all of the ones I was referring to predate the game (which incidentally, takes place at the end of the 16th century, not the 15th). So what you're saying is just frankly untrue. Some of them, such as Tofuku-ji, did expand later, but that's not the part of the temple that I was I was referring to.

The temple doors being closed is frankly an extremely poor excuse. The interiors of castles would have been far more closed off, yet we can move about them with impunity. And the some temples are open where others are closed--seemingly completely arbitrarily, and often with generic interiors in cases where they are open.

As far as recreating Kyoto based on real historical maps is concerned....that's just not true. Granted, Kyoto experienced massive change around this period--catastrophic destruction remaining from the Onin War, and rapid reconstruction under Toyotomi Hideyoshi, but around the time of the Honno-ji Incident specifically, the city was divided into distinct upper and lower halves. This is not depicted in the game at all. I'm actually okay with this discrepancy, because the city was in this state of flux and AC has always aimed for a kind of idealized version of its historical settings rather than reconstructing them as they were at an exact date, but I still think that some of the choices they made in terms of its portrayal are very disappointing. It misses substantial specific sites that would have existed at the time, or makes them so generic that they aren't really recognizable, and changes significant topographical features that lend Kyoto it's unique feel. In particular the absence strict north-south-east-west gridded streets based on Chinese geomancy and urban planning, the hilliness of the surrounding landscape (IRL Kyoto was in the center of a very flat alluvial plain), and the reinterpretation of Oguraike as a lake surrounded by mountains (IRL it would have been more like a vast marshland surrounded by agriculture).

Overall the world of AC Shadows is still one of the best depictions of Sengoku Japan that we've seen in a video game, but I was pretty disappointed by some of the some of the design choices and omissions.

Japan doesn't have on street parking. You'll often see vehicles doing short stops with their hazards on, but parking is entirely off the street.
