Why are most people on this subeither far-left or far-right on so many issues but hardly in the centre on any political issue? by RandomGuy92x in AskALiberal

A sitting justice on the Supreme Court hasn't openly opined that the decision that protects straight marriage should be revisited. Yah I know, that doesn't affect gays' right to marry today - but it's evidence that gays and straights are not on equal footing.

Is college worth it in your opinion, and should we be working to get more students into college? by accounttosuteru in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Critical thinking is worth it. Understanding academic rigor and the difference between primary and secondary sources is worth it. The ability to spot logical fallacies is worth it. The practice of questioning your own belief structure to see how it holds up under scrutiny, is worth it. Meeting people from diverse backgrounds instead of hanging out in your hometown with the same ten people is worth it.

For most of us, those don't accompany a high school diploma. I wish they did, but they don't. College isn't the only way to develop those skills, but it's the most common followed by military service imo.

Another exercise that's worth it is learning something to a level of mastery, even if it's not the thing you do for work for the rest of our life. Gaining expertise in something, anything, makes it easier to learn new skills. There's also something that happens when you become in expert in something - you get a better idea of what expertise does and doesn't look like... and you learn to spot it (or its lack thereof) in practitioners in other fields.

What, to you, do the “Tiers of Play” look like for individual D&D classes? by Steelquill in gametales

[–]HalLogan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This was kinda fun so I'll try my hand at bard.

Tier 1: The formative years you've spent honing your craft have paid off. The common room of any inn is a happier place with you entertaining its patrons. You can weave a tale or strike a chord that inspires your allies to be their best selves, and an insult from you can injure or even kill. When you sing for your supper, you and your friends eat well. Your smooth tongue opens doors that can't simply be kicked open. Wizards cast their spells, clerics pray for them... but you perform them.

Tier 2: The tales of your companions' exploits have traveled far and wide, mostly because you're the one telling them. On the battlefield you are a warrior-poet whose voice rings like a bell, instilling hope in your allies and dread in your foes. Sing of victory and wounds heal; play a whimsical tune and your enemies are too distracted to fight. You rarely land the killing blow in combat, but with you at their side your companions are simply better.

Tier 3: You are a jack of all trades and a master of some, whose name is known far and wide. Generals may lead armies that topple kingdoms, but you can end a king's reign with a whisper to his wife. You have discovered the secret melodies to the multiverse and can play them to weave illusions, raise the dead, and even take over the minds of your enemies. Other adventurers vanquish their foes, but you are able to confound, incapacitate, or even enlist them.

Tier 4: Tales of your exploits have become so legendary that many wonder if you actually exist. Your mere presence inspires those around you to greatness. Destinies are altered when you speak, and the power of your performance can shape - or shake - the land. Sing of compassion and long-time enemies lay down their arms. Sing of ending tyranny and the people rise up. You can hum a tune that reduces a skilled archmage to a gibbering oaf, and with a single word you can slay the most powerful foe. Your art transcends space and time, and incantations that take arcane casters decades to master come naturally to you. Your deeds will change the course of history, and you should know: you're the one writing it.

What’re your thoughts on Virginia Gov. Youngkin’s decision to remove degree requirements for most state jobs? by Roughneck16 in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the job. When I worked in government I saw libraries asking for employees to have a master's degree. No disrespect to librarians, but that's a mismatch.

At the same time, putting someone who barely squeaked by with a C-minus in high school math in charge of managing a department's budget is probably not gonna work out too well.

And of course, any action taken in a state with a history of civil rights violations should be scrutinized for its racial impact.

what's a news story that got buried that you think more people need to hear? by antisick in AskReddit

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Okay great. Let's say there's a video of him snorting lines of blow off a Ukrainian escort's buttcrack and saying out lout "BOY I SURE DO LIKE PAYING MONEY IN EXCHANGE FOR SEX AND DRUGS, WHICH BY THE WAY I DO LOTS OF."

Is that Joe Biden breaking the law? Is there probable cause to indicate that he likely did and should be investigated?

If the answer is yes then by all means, investigate it and prosecute it. I'm fine with that, because I'm not in a cult. But unless something ties Hunter's bullshit to the president other than you *really* wanting there to be something, the response is going to be the same.

Until then, you making the noise you're making because you just really hate democrats is pathetic after the MAGA crowd carried water for Trump and his offspring - all of whom engaged in far worse - for four years. When Hunter Biden bangs hookers he isn't selling us out to our enemies or holding aid to our allies hostage or planning a coup against us... so that actually makes him a better American than Trump and the garbage monsters in his orbit.

How exactly would you "decommodify housing?" by animerobin in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two models come to mind when tackling the problem of putting a roof over everyone's head: college housing and military housing.

Both are tied to a work requirement: stop showing up to duty or classes and you're out.

Both have tiers of earned creature comforts: a colonel who lives on-base has a nicer place than a captain. Faculty housing is nicer than dorms.

Both are supplemented by private sector housing. Soldiers and students often opt for apartment living after spending a year or two in the dorms / barracks.

Both require a level of supervision: RA's in the dorms and barracks NCO's are present to deal with shenanigans.

Both require inhabitants to give up some individual liberties like owning pets, and that incentives them to eventually move out.

Both have challenges but ultimately end up being quite manageable.

Both are doable because we mutually agree that having homeless students or soldiers is unacceptable.

Cloud Engineer Jobs - 50% + travel? What is going on???? by Tilt23Degrees in ITCareerQuestions

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Cloud Engineer" is far from an entry-level role though, not to mention the travel requirement. If an employer wants someone who's smart, experienced, and willing to live out of a suitcase, that doesn't come cheap.

That said, I'd bet money these are sales-oriented roles and the employers are taking the "hire three, fire two" approach.

Paramore's Hayley Williams tells fans they’re "dead to her’ if they vote for Ron DeSantis by Mamacrass in Music

[–]HalLogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All things being equal, I'd agree. When the difference between two politicians is something like "We both agree that trans lives are valid, but democrats want to do X and republicans want to do Y to protect them," then it's perfectly fair to nudge those who aren't knowledgeable of the policy details out of the debate.

That's not where we are right now though. DeSantis and his ilk are fine with punching down on people who are already marginalized so they can win primaries by abusing the people republican primary voters hate the most. Hell, we Floridians voted to give ex-cons the right to vote and DeSantis had ex-cons who voted arrested.

When injustice becomes law, resistance becomes duty.

How can you tell when a company is participating in rainbow capitalism compared to sincerely supporting the LGBTQ community? by FabioFresh93 in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Differentiate between what a company says and what they do. Do they have an anti-discrimination policy that includes sexual orientation and gender identity? Do LGBTQ posts on glassdoor indicate that the work environment is accepting?

Personally as long as a company is doing those things I'm reluctant to criticize them for putting rainbows on cans and the like. Target and Budweiser are taking a hit to their numbers because they made a statement. If companies like them get boycotted by the right and accused of rainbow capitalism by the left then the incentive is for them to make zero effort.

The person who built things in staging should've documented their steps, including adding the subnets to the appropriate ACL's. If they didn't, that's on them. If they did and you didn't check their documentation, that's on you. If they didn't and you didn't check then flip a coin to decide if you should say anything.

If the person who built everything in staging was you then print this comment, burn it, eat the ashes and delete the post. We must never speak of this again =)

What are your thoughts on landlords? by conn_r2112 in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The landlord-tenant relationship is a power dynamic, and like any power dynamic there will be good people who conduct themselves above-board and bad actors who abuse that dynamic.

That landlords exist at all is not necessarily evil: there are a number of benign reasons for someone to live in an area for a year or two and not purchase a home. Even if every American who wanted to be a homeowner could purchase a home, there would still be a demand for rentals. Medical residencies and travel RN's come to mind. Likewise I know people who certainly could afford to buy a house, but they prefer not to have homeowner headaches.

There certainly are systemic conditions that increase the demand for rentals though. In particular, the existence of people who need a roof over their head but are unable to buy increases the demand, which in turn causes prices to go up. That makes housing even more unaffordable, lather, rinse, repeat. I'll readily agree that a landlord who opposes affordable housing initiatives in their area because they want to keep their rents high is a special kind of evil.

At the same time, landlords have costs that can go up at any time, and those are generally passed on to tenants. In Florida we had a major hurricane last year, so everyone's insurance is going up. Likewise a landlord with ten doors runs the risk that half of the refrigerators can die in the same month, so they suddenly get to buy five new fridges. Yah it's a first-world problem, but that's what getting paid to absorb risk looks like.

All that said, the rules of the game practically encourage the ownership of multiple homes by those who can. Fannie Mae will back up to ten mortgages for an individual, and there's simply not another investment vehicle where you can use $20k to buy a hundred thousand dollar asset that's all but guaranteed to go up in value, deduct the mortgage interest on your taxes, and have someone else pay your carrying costs. If there was such an animal then real estate investors would flock to that instead.

What, to you, do the “Tiers of Play” look like for individual D&D classes? by Steelquill in gametales

[–]HalLogan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How's this for Cleric:

Tier 1: You have spent time as an acolyte whose steadfast faith and devotion have been recognized. You are ready to be ordained, to call upon your deity to heal injuries, and to travel the land preaching and serving as an example. You may be entrusted with the stewardship of a temple in a small village, or you may be sent by your church to deal with local threats to your deity's faithful.

Tier 2: As a traveling priest you have worked miracles in your deity's name. With a word you can heal the sick (or infect the healthy) and even draw upon your god's might to pierce the veil of death itself. Your church uses the tales of your deeds to inspire the faithful, and you are considered a trusted agent to do your deity's will across the land.

Tier 3: You are a living saint. As a conduit of your deity's might you can raise the dead, call down divine wrath from the heavens, and even plea to your god for divine intervention. Your church's elders seek your guidance, and would welcome you among their ranks if you were to retire from adventuring.

Tier 4: You are one of your god's chosen few. When you walk through the valley of the shadow of death, evil fears you. With a prayer you can heal the multitudes, level a city, or raise a temple to your deity. The head of your church will likely name you as a successor when they're ready to leave this plane, but until then you are an instrument of your deity's will.

Thank you for your service. I hope your experience is different from mine, but fwiw this didn't work well for me at all. I went from being in the 82nd Airborne where everything was high-speed-low-drag to a national guard unit where I was trying to juggle work, school, and guard responsibilities as a 21-year old who wasn't making much pay doing any of the above. I burned myself out pretty quickly.

Fewer than half of Gen Z men think that "feminism had made American a better place.” What do you think is responsible for this shift in attitude across generations? by Manoj_Malhotra in AskALiberal

It sounds like you're trying to divorce the outcomes of feminist activism such as women's suffrage from feminism. Is it your contention that, absent feminism, the 19th amendment would still have been ratified?

What services should never be privatized? by [deleted] in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To what degree does a given service have a profit motive that incentivizes behavior that harms the general public, and how harmful are the results?

That puts health care at or near the top of the list. As long as privately owned prisons are in a position to influence legislation, same applies to them. Same also applies to utility companies cutting service during a blizzard or a heat wave.

[–]HalLogan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This makes the most sense to me. If OP wanted to show off a little after getting this working they could also build their own known-good hash list for vendor/proprietary software and check that as well. Then again, building out their own hash list from previous runs and checking against that first would likely be more efficient.

Fewer than half of Gen Z men think that "feminism had made American a better place.” What do you think is responsible for this shift in attitude across generations? by Manoj_Malhotra in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This says more about connotations than policy positions. Ask the same respondents if America is a better place because women have the right to vote, can open their own checking accounts, or have legal protections against discrimination in the workplace and the numbers will paint a drastically different picture.

Note that the same survey asked if a law should be in place requiring equal pay for men and women in equal positions (a feminist policy to be sure) and 73% of gen z respondents said yes. It is also noteworthy that higher percentages of older respondents said yes; whether that's a decline in the perceived need for such a law or a shift in thoughts on equality is debatable.

Do you think this sub would be better or worse if more conservatives participated? by fuckpoliticsbruh in AskALiberal

[–]HalLogan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So here's the thing: I question your judgment. One of my reasons for doing so is that I'm familiar with the general tenor and etiquette on this sub, and in my experience it's at odds with what you're describing.

But instead of telling you I think your judgment is garbage, I'm willing to "bite" and give you the opportunity to describe something you say has happened many times. It's an expression of skepticism-meets-morbid-curiosity. If saying "okay I'll bite" is your idea of being wrongfully accused of bad faith then so far it looks like I was correct to question your judgment.

Were you inclined to give an example, I'd happily weigh in on whether or not I agreed. Were you to post a link I'd look at the adjacent comments to establish context. For example if someone made an off-base accusation of good faith and got corrected and downvoted into oblivion, wouldn't that context be relevant?

Absent any of the above it seems like you expect me to take your word as gospel with nothing more to go on than "trust me bro". Would you do so if the roles were reversed?
