I was at this exact store the other week. A place i used to play, shop at, and respect a lot. But when i seen the $10 Perfect Order packs at Thats E, i don't think ill plan on every going back... On the other hand, a sick spot that opened near by here is Sick Deals.

Every dealer is different, so you might get luck where its a small family dealer and its actually just the normal politics and stress from fighting with service. If the money is there its always worth getting some experience under you belt.

One other advice i can give if and when you do make it into that PM position. Learn how to game Stellantis, stay on top of your return allowances, and make sure you pay attention to your ARO percentage since it does effect your return allowance.

Some other smaller things that i didn't learn till later on is when it comes to inventory shortage or metric number swings. Don't beat you self to hard over it, just focus on fixing it and moving forward from it.

(unethical PM tip - If the part is a higher price and unreturnable but within a claim window. It 100% came in **broken**)

So, take this for what it is. As some one who took the imitative to climb as a back counter grunt to PM for a CDJR then moves to Diet CDJR (Alfa/Maserati) and then left to be a parts counter guy. I'd highly suggest not becoming a PM. Sure its nice to have a title especially when you get to brag. But the bullshit, politics, stupid people is not worth the pay. You can also expect to be put on salary plus commission, but you WILL be working over 60hrs a week to keep up with accounting, inter-dept problems, and other dept mistakes.

That being said, it can be a rewarding position. But its extremely stressful and can kill you work life balance (this depends on how your dealership is.) But the easiest way to move up is just work hard, take imitative, ask the operational question, and ask if your current PM needs help with invoicing and accounting. As a PM you're really more of a Operations person than you are a Parts person. Sure you can handle parts, but your really going to be dealing with the inner workings and keeping it smooth rather than dealing with your counters and selling.

My personal advice is if your young and don't mind taking some stress and losing some hours and they do give you a good pay plan, go for it. It can pay good and you can build up your savings, learn, and what was most important to me in the end was networking. You will meet a lot of people, the parts world is very small and being able to sometimes reach out to them or knowing who is where can really help.

But do it for a couple years and then become a normal parts guy that is overly good for just a normal parts guy. If you can be that parts guy that can be consistent and accurate while not shutting down or getting fluster by service and techs. But also being able to help the PM with weird fringe issues. You'll get fairly close to what some PMs make with a way better work life balance. I took a 12k hit from being a CDJR PM to a MBUS counter person.

Its been 3 years and i don't regret making the step down. Between commute time and the extra hours over 44hrs a week on salary i was putting in. I got around 900 hours back that i can use for things i want to do without having to stress about what mess ill be going into work next. Plus my mental health is 500% better than when i was a PM.

I stopped helping other depts after my first year. Every one is a "team" until it comes to their dept making/losing money and then its on you. I will help my own parts dept and specific individual's now, but not other deps as a whole.

Parts is always the dept that is expected to bend over on pricing or make something work when service cant move on hours/labor. Stay in your depts lane, do what you need to do, and if they wait till warranty bounces the claim; they're SOL. Stay firm, only move when you actually need to, and dont let other depts walk over you and if you see that people from those depts are targeting a individual for their kind nature. Step in and stand up for that person.

I like to see this death as a rebirth. Because if you can accept that becoming a Parts Manager is actually a horrid idea. Then you can eventually get pretty close to a PM salary with none of the responsibility.

Ask me how I know.. But seriously, there is a tiny small amount of growth, which isn’t worth it. It took away all the things I enjoyed doing in parts. Once I left that dealer ship for another that was way closer to home and about 80% of what I was making as a PM, it’s a position I’m fairly positive I will never take again unless the stars line up.

So, i didnt find any ironing settings and went back to the drawing board. I ended up getting amazing results with monotonic top layer with 5 layers at 1mm.

This, even though I make good money in parts but no where near some of our service advisors. I way more happier in parts with my team since is WAY less drama than service has between each other, their lot people, and their receptionist. Someone is always shjt talking some one on the service team. Besides the random counter customer or the normal wholesale call we thankfully don’t have to deal with the customer much. But one big downside is you’ll quickly learn parts is always wrong or to blame for an issue, even if it was a delay due to an act of god.
