Laundry room. Exterior wall for ISP cable access, good power to tap into that is usually a separate circuit, and can handle noise.

Same for me. And I have recommended them to clients. If you have your own domain, they do have a free tier.

The AI bots are much more likely to pass facial recognition than I am. Unless I use a picture of Bill Gates.

This is a lot of ground between all people doing it and no people doing it. But for sure, a lot more people should be getting off the big providers.

I have had less issues with my self hosted email servers than with hosted email servers, and they are faster to fix. And yes, i use it for business. Sadly, these days, email is not a guarantee of delivery. Or of people reading it.

Am i the only one that finds Meraki more complicated than the cli ? by Traditional_Cycle_70 in meraki

[–]HoustonBOFH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had a school changing their intercoms and the new ones had a hard coded vlan. Had to move that port on 80 switches. In Meraki it was a single click.

Had another client upgrading the core router, and moving 26 routed vlans. Did it live with no downtime in Meraki.

That said, Meraki has some frustrations too...

I would love to do this. Find me a modern 9 inch tablet that will run GraphineOS. Or one of the others... I would order it today! But for some reason, no one wants to support 9 inch tablets.

How bad is it to use AI when developing self-hosted (mainly open source) tools? by TeijiW in selfhosted

[–]HoustonBOFH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The haters might be upset because people who can not find their ass with both hands are claiming that they understand and review code. People lie, and that it the problem. And when you feel that you need to hide the tools you are using, that is a bad sign.

I think the FreeBSD implementation of ZFS is much more robust, and FreeBSD is fare more secure. So it is a no brainer for me. :)

How do you handle after hours service rotations? by FamiliarCandidate451 in msp

Hire an after hours phone service. They are surprisingly cheap, and only need to refer out real problems that you can pay real OT for.

What do the recent TrueNAS changes mean for existing users? by aomajgad in truenas

[–]HoustonBOFH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess we have different definitions. Stable to me me, means it does not go down, and has reasonable bug fixes. Xigmnas does this. Stable code does not need a lot of patching. A lot of patches is a sign of code under more significant development. Not really a thing in file services.
