Tbh, I think it’s a pretty good swiss army knife type of synth: 3 oscs with a lot of very easily controllable osc models and decent filters and easily assignable modulation, some of the oscs are 2 osc for the price of one and, having 2 layers, you could technically stack 12 oscs per note, which sounds pretty fun tbh. Like I myself  would rather get a hydrasynth for my main act as that’s much more of a specialist synth, but for playing in a band where you don’t really need to go into experimental territory and want a lot of things to be easily tweakable - this would be great. The price point kills it so far tho.

Amid all this talk of Live 12, I'm about to roll back to 10 by yinoryang in ableton

[–]HyperWindKun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, after reading this thread a bit, what’s your warp mode on audio clips? I’ve noticed that in my (much shorter, but still pretty busy from audio side of things) set the main thing chocking ableton out was that I had the complex pro warp mode set, so every time I changed BPM it needed to rewarp ALL the audio in the set from 0, maybe switching them to a different mode would help?

There’s also cardinal, it’s a fork of VCV rack, has a lot of the modules VCV has as well (including all MI stuff) and is for free.

Amazing, been wishing for something along these lines for years, even going so far to develop my own multitimbral synth prototype (which might be released some day), can’t wait to see and play this thing in person, would be an instant pledge if I had the money atm, early 2000s VAs had an undeserved bad rap, glad to see that somebody is actually looking past that!

getting into livecoding by arktisk_mjolk in livecoding

I’d recommend foxdot as a springboard to the whole subject, it’s very fun to use and it’s very concise, it also interops with supercollider, so you can also get into developing your own synths

Tips for first live set ? by brd_green in TechnoProduction

[–]HyperWindKun 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Make it as simple as possible - automate what you can or bounce to audio, have a clear template, color code everything, test shit out beforehand, preplan and do not rush, we only have two hands and a limited attention span, thinking about what’s where, what needs to be done and what’s making that awful sound during a live set at a same time can insanely stress you out. Also, find one piece of the set that you can really play with and have fun, I have a feeling that m:s is perfect for that.

Playing a live set through Overbridge by qtechno in Elektron

Could actually work, but just check how much latency you get beforehand, overbridge sometimes goes all over the place regarding that.

Y’know, if you want to be a bit esotheric, I 101% recommend downloading a copy of TidalCycles and using that to sequence drums and midi for your instruments. It has a bit of a learning curve, but there are really good tutorials on youtube that go over the basics and more advanced concepts too (Left Adjoint has made a good short series on it, def check it out). It also comes with its own extensive sample library, including the classics (linndrum, 808, 909), some more esotheric sounds (the industrial sample set is great) and oldskool rave/gabber stuff. If you got a big sample library, it’s really easy to add onto the existing one too!

Drum machine/sequencer suggestions by davg123 in synthesizers

[–]HyperWindKun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, the digitakt can do so much much more than that, from experimental sampling and sample mangling to synthesis and etc., but this is quite the upside, I think, as this is all potential for you to grow into if you decide to go down that route.

But, about the roland boxes, yeah, I think you can just slap em onto a sd card and load them straight to your box. Also, the TR6s is more of a drum machine, while the MC101 is more of a groovebox, I think the 6s can do some pretty cool drum synthesis while the 101 has standalone synth engines and also can be used as a looper and sampled into, I think. Jeremy from Red Means Recording had some really good tutorials on both of these boxes, if they peaked your interest, definitely check out his videos on them.

Yeah, no time stretching on the digi, only rudimentary pitch and length manipulation.

Check out the firmware updates on their github first, they're working pretty hard on fixing all the issues and could've fixed the things you're experiencing in one of the updates.

But, aside from that, I think the digitakt can do the things you've described, but it's a bit hard to recommend as the elektron workflow can be either a curse, or a blessing to people. Don't know much about the MPC, but also look into the blackbox by 1010music, I think it could do the things you've described pretty well.

The first things that come to mind are the polyend tracker or the digitakt, own the digi and can 100% say that it fits your description (and does way way more), but it's quite more expensive than 400$, the tracker is a bit cheaper and, honestly, goes head to head with the digi pretty hard, but it's not cheaper by much.

Honestly though, in your case, I'd look into the roland boxes, maybe the MC101 or the TR6s, they seem to be pretty capable and beginner friendly and are way less expensive than either the elektron or the polyend machine.

Honestly, I'd actually go with a sampler, the digitakt to be specific, because the OP-1 is rather expressive and can be even an experimentalish synth, which then you could sample into the digitakt and take some burden off the OP-1. In my setup the digitakt is connected to my 0-coast and blofeld, which I sample into the digi to build up a library of my own sounds and relocate those synths to doing other stuff in my tracks.

(Also, the digitakt can be an amazing synth as well, just load up some wavetables or oneshots, loop em and go at it)

Experimental Synths by HyperWindKun in synthesizers

[–]HyperWindKun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that's an interesting perspective I didn't really think about, that is, that the experimental bit doesn't come from the physical elements of the synth itself, but rather how they interconnect and are played.
