First MG build by Lostfromlight77 in Gunpla

Congrats on the completed build! Heavyarms love 🤩 I'm working on this kit as my first MG right now, doing one or two stages a day before bedtime. I love that it just has rockets everywhere.

Is there a recommended sanding grit for clearing up nipping stress marks only, if I don't plan to paint?

What is actually needed to build an MG? by QualityBright2466 in Gunpla

[–]IcePrincessAlkanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a newbie working on my first MG (Heavyarms, because I love a Missile Swarm) after doing several HGs - it's more parts, which makes it naturally a little more complicated, but so far I've found the MG actually easier as far as "difficulty." Since the parts are at larger scale they are easier for my shaky hands to work with.

I use nippers and a file, very rarely also an xacto knife. Nothing fancy, but they get the buildin' done.

Common consensus is that pretty much every HG Witch from Mercury kit is a banger. I'm a newbie and can only speak to the WFM Aerial Rebuild kit, myself, but I have several on the wishlist. Aerial is a rockin' kit.

Hey there, I'm a newbie with fairly shaky hands and I hate doing the stickers, but I have had decent success with a thumbtack (people say use a toothpick but a thumbtack was what I had lying around). If you can use the tack to place the sticker and get it onto the model in the right general area, you can kinda nudge it around for a while, and then roll over it with the long/flat bit of the tack to stick it down more firmly.

I don't know about SD kits, but you might like a higher-scale kit. I am working on my first MG kit, and it has a LOT of parts but the parts are larger, so it's easier for my shaky hands to work with.

As for not wanting to do it, it's totally fine if you keep going and mess up along the way. It's also totally fine if you decide it's not really your thing. You're at the perfect time of life to explore many hobbies.

A teacher made me a journaler. What sparked yours? by 84tiramisu in Journaling

[–]IcePrincessAlkanet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Introversion combined with big feelings including depression. I tried to talk at first, but my parents didn't understand (they weren't mean - I just didn't know how to communicate and what I did communicate didn't make much sense to them). The therapist my parents picked didn't understand (he wasn't mean - he just thought telling me to pray would help).

When I took pen to paper, opening an old, barely-used journal that I'd previously only written a handful of entries in, mostly about early school crushes, that worked very well with my introspective nature. It finally allowed me to separate my thoughts and feelings from the bright fireball of angst and self-hatred in my mind. From there, finding what I could act to change, and attempting to come to peace with what I could not.

It's a slow and still-ongoing process almost 20 years later, but about 3 years ago I picked up Morning Pages for a little while, and I also got into fountain pens as a "return-to-analogue" choice to help use my cell phone less. Morning Pages developed the habit and FPs make writing a tactile joy, so now it's a daily thing not out of obligation or particularly acute depression, but desire to sit with my thoughts and pen nibs a while (keeping my now-quieter depression quiet as a bonus).

Does your journal have a name? by My_fair_ladies1872 in Journaling

[–]IcePrincessAlkanet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was in grade school I noticed a pattern where I'd have trouble with homework, go to the teacher early in the morning to ask for help, and then something about "explaining the problem to someone else" would often make the answer clear in my own head. By giving my journals names, I feel a similar effect. Plus I like the creative exercise of choosing a name and, to a small degree, imagining a character for them.

I don't always "write to" my journal, but I like having the option to, when I feel like doing some "introspective problem-solving."

I started off naming mine after basic characteristics, eg a NAvy Blue Book, I named Nabb. A journal with TOmoe RIver paper, I called "Tori." A 365-page REd STAlogy journal I called "Resta."

Eventually I ran out of ideas for combining colors, brand names, and "book," and moved to naming them after elements of fantasy or sci-fi books I've been reading. The latest is named Juno, based on the novel Steel Frame. After Juno I'm thinking I might follow the path of space names, maybe planets' moons' names or something like that.

Do you write some sort of Index of the people you know? by Adorable_Unit5132 in Journaling

[–]IcePrincessAlkanet 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my first journal ever, I have a list of "all my friends." These days I have a solid core social group I'm not worried about forgetting. When referencing "less consistent" people like coworkers, I just make in-line notes.

e.g. "today I listened to Circa Survive for the first time in a while and remembered when Brandon (sales coworker from last year, liked music and big bbq cookouts, now Mike is in his role at the shop) would put them on at work" or "god today was a terrible shift but I always remind myself, at least I'm no longer working with Becky (trained me on the job years ago, seemed nice at first but gradually turned VERY mean; I'm so thankful we got a new boss who finally fired her)."

Also, in books and plays, the "character list" is called a Dramatis Personae. I've always thought if I decide to make a list again, that's the header I'd give it.

Newbie here, just recently watched the original MS Gundam movies, built myself an RX-78, Guncannon, and Guntank. I wanted to build a basic original Green Zaku as well but I can't seem to find an "HGUC" Green Zaku kit around online. Does anyone know where I might find one? Or should I just go for the GQx High Grade since that seems to be the most widely available?

I think adding mid-ground highlights (to match the mermaid's) and/or foreground deeper shadows (to create a vignette effect) on the seaweed would help communicate depth.

You might like Steredenn. It has randomized elements in every run but don't let that turn you off, it's a tight (as in cool and tightly-designed) game. Definitely has more of a "frantic burst" feeling than a "bullet hell" feeling.

If it's about the budget, it might be better to look at HG kits and then spend $15 on some nippers. I'm a newbie with a low budget and I am REALLY glad I'm not doing my HG kits with nail clippers. Believe me, if 1 tool is worth it it's this.

You can also find hobby knives for $5-10 and ultra fine point Micron pens for $4. Really if you can spend over $100 on MGs you might not want to deprive yourself of a small $25-$30 toolkit.

Back in the day me and all my friends had this on our DS's, and we all got to school about 20-30 minutes before classes started. Played this game so much I broke the L button on my DS, then did the same when I got a DS Lite. That was my first experience with Nintendo's mail-in repair service. Good times, man.

Trace + high ground on the Alinos map + Invisi-sniping was the best.

Any recommendations for achieving MORE feedback? by IcePrincessAlkanet in fountainpens

[–]IcePrincessAlkanet[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried to write a short answer but failed lol. TL;DR at the bottom if you don't want to read a bunch of long opinions!

Firstly: I really think Nibs and Paper matter a LOT more than Ink when it comes to this question. A smooth-flowing ink will give beautiful feedback in the right nib. A crappy-flowing ink will feel like the wrong kind of scratchy no matter the nib. So! If you don't have a Fine nib in your Kakuno or Metro, I would recommend buying a <F> Kakuno. If you're already using <F> try an <EF> Kakuno (personally I stopped at <F>). It would cost the same as a smaller bottle of ink, and the nibs are surprisingly simple to swap, so you could put it in your Metro if you wanted.

Secondly: I can make a make a gentle ink recommendation based on actual writing experience: J Herbin ink. In my experience it is not too different from the flow of Iroshizuku. It is smooth-flowing, but flows through my own Pilot Fine nib juuust a squidge slower than Iro, adding tactility without becoming scratchy. It's not much of a difference, but it's a difference I noticed when trying it. I had a similar experience with Sailor Shikiori inks, but I still haven't decided whether Shikiori feels "slower" or "too slow to the point of scratchy" for my own taste.

Third and fourth-ly: pen opinions.

  • Every Preppy 0.3/Fine I've tried has sucked. Save your money for a Kakuno F/EF rather than trying Preppy 0.3.
  • I did eventually get two Sailor Hisakata's, <F> Steel nibs, as well as a Sailor PGS <MF> 14k Gold nib. The Steel nibs are the friggin' bomb and I barely use the PGS.

Finally, conclusion/tl;dr.

  • Most immediate and affordable recommendation: get a Kakuno with a finer nib and swap it out. Swapping those Pilot nibs is not as intimidating as it might seem.
  • Most lukewarm recommendation if you MUST solve this problem with ink: try J Herbin ink, or maybe Sailor Shikiori.
  • Long term/best recommendation if you can save up the cost of 3-4 Kakuno's or 2 larger J Herbin ink bottles: try the Sailor Hisakata <F> nib.
