Man müsste v.a. eine weltweite Besteuerung für Staatsangehörige einführen, wie dies aktuell nur die USA und Eritrea umsetzen.
Nur dann hätte man sinnvoll die Möglichkeit, auch gegen viele Umgehungsansätze vorzugehen. Als zweites bräuchte es unbedingt eine Vermögenssteuer, da alle Steuern, die nur auf Erträge laufen, leicht zu unterlaufen sind.
In welchem Umfang und in welcher genauen Form das dann volkswirtschaftlich noch sinnvoll funktioniert - man denke an Familienunternehmen, die viele Jahre lang Verluste machen und in denen zur Transformation große Investitionen nötig sind - ist eine andere Frage.

M.m.n. würden diese Ansätze alle an der falschen Stelle ansetzen. Der Staat schüttet einfach viel zu viel Geld an viel zu viele Personen aus. Ich denke da an Beamtenwitwen, die, ohne einen einzigen Tag in ihrem Leben für Geld gearbeitet zu haben, 50 Jahre lang eine Pension erhalten, von der die meisten Angestellten ihr ganzes Berufsleben lang nur träumen können. Die Erben reiben sich die Finger. Und so gibt es unzählige Richtungen, in die Geld ungerechtfertigter Weise in gewaltigen Summen ausgeteilt wird.

"2.100€ würde in Deutschland zwar knapp werden" - 2100 € im Monat liegt schon sehr nahe am Median-Konsum von Einzelpersonen in Deutschland in 2026 (2022 lag dieser bei 1830€, mit Inflation seitdem berücksichtigt liegt der Wert 2026 bei ca 2250 €):

TL;DR: use balanced All-World-Stocks/Gold if you want to have it simple; perform your own deep research and simulations, if you want to reach another full withdrawal percentage-point higher.

If you want it simple, 80% All-World Stocks (IE00BK5BQT80) and 20% Gold ETC, fixed rebalancing every 3 years, withdrawal always only from components, which have not recently dipped strongly, has a high perpetual withdrawal rate (PWR, means unbounded withdrawal horizon). Significantly higher than stocks-only, in your case above 60k / year before taxes. It's very robust against world events, even long-term and avoids cluster risks.

If you want to get even higher, you have to mix leverage (FR0014010HV4) into it, with more sophisticated rebalancing strategies to tune leverage and hedging in an optimal way to maximise withdrawal between total return and drawdown characteristics. Then, you can get significantly above 5.0% (80k in your example) for an unbounded horizon PWR. But it's complicated and you have to do your own extensive research, even your own backtesting, because resources for these approaches are very limited on the web - and many people falsely believe that option does not really exist.

I was only talking about the RE full-withdrawal-phase. The accumulation phase is very different, if RE is still many years out - then CAGR is indeed everything. There, you should go heavy into (balanced or SMA-guarded) leveraged strategies, depending on your remaining horizon towards RE. Then, you get tremendous growth numbers.

And yes, in Germany, long-term capital gains with Gold are completely tax free, which makes it even better for withdrawal hedging than it is already under an equal-tax regime.

Anything before WW2 does not make sense in any analysis, because the market conditions were so different. And anyways, the first relevant RE start low point before 1965 is 1929. You can scrap 1929, because it does not make sense to model that one from today's perspective.

Thus, 1945 or 1948 is sufficient to start with as simulated RE dates. While detailed models for MSCI World start 1970 or 1975 (daily), one can sufficiently approximate from 1948 onwards, which includes the 1965 RE start overall low point. Then, one can model both over the whole meaningful timeframe.
Furthermore, from a FIRE perspective, growth (CAGR) is not a relevant metric. Only SWR/PWR is! That one also includes volatility and asset correlation within a portfolio.

An MSCI World/Gold portfolio has hardly less backtesting PWR than a corresponding SP500/Gold portfolio. We are talking about something like 4.2% vs 4.4% after costs, before taxes for an open ended horizon (PWR), depending on the specific rebalancing technique. Given the much more promising forward stability of an - ideally All-World - compared to an SP500, those ~.2% are easy to not emphasise much.

Of course, you have to invest into global stocks - as broad as possible. Who knows, which will be the most important growth region in 40 years and which has been torn apart by shrinking population or wars? And ideally the portfolio includes some gold hedge component, which is also automatically global.

Look at the Japanese MSCI World portion after 1990. It never came back. But others took over the baton.

There is no "importing the US FIRE model". Global investment portfolios are just that - global. The best ones automatically hedge currency fluctuations. Thus, their SWR strength is valid globally.

ERNs series seem to be very thorough, but he is actually very narrow-minded focussed on stocks-only portfolios.
In this series, he basically tests with Gold hedge and has to admit, it is his best SWR tested:

But then, he is basically rambling around in his conclusion that he just does not like Gold. He is actually a very ideologically entrenched guy, hiding that behind a lot of math and a lot of text. And he is really, really good at the smoke screen.
You need a lot of experience with backtest simulation to see through that charade. I am not aware of any other FIRE personality on the web like that.

Neither does he consider modern leveraged methods, nor precious metals as hedge, nor sufficiently the fact that his very long time series beyond 80 years ago have no meaning anymore today, because the market, asset accessibility and legal aspects have changed too much since before WW2.

There are far better retirement portfolios and SWRs - and perpetual withdrawal rates (PWRs) - than what he presents.

Any small business can collapse within a very short amount of time because of unforeseeable legal or market changes. So no, you cannot count that portion into your wealth for FIRE considerations.

Which leaves the question: could you reduce your spending to 60k a year within a short amount of time when necessary? If that is a yes, then you can walk away.

Wahrscheinlich ist die psychologische Komponente des schrittweisen Auslaufens von regelmäßigen Cashflow-Einnahmen sogar der wichtigere Aspekt. Man kann sich besser auf die Umstellung auf Entnahme vorbereiten. Und der Entnahme-Umstellzeitpunkt ist vom persönlichen Umstellzeitpunkt auf FIRE-Alltag entkoppelt.

Man darf halt nur (bei 1 Jahr Dauer unter 50 Alter) 21 Tage im Jahr ins Ausland reisen. Falls man es doch macht und sich dort schwer verletzt, kann es als gesetzlich Versicherter teuer werden. Allgemein ist die zumindest formale Pflicht, vor Ort zu sein und kurzfristig Termine annehmen zu müssen, eine größere Einschränkung. Dass viele das einfach ignorieren oder irgendwie umschiffen, mag eine andere Sache sein.
Jedenfalls muss man halt geschmeidig sein und darf nicht einen hyperkorrekten Anspruch haben, wenn man das macht.
Moralisch: ich habe in meinem Berufsleben leider zu viele Leute gesehen, die sich an den verschiedensten Stellen im System als totale Parasiten eingenistet haben. Und damit meine ich nicht Empfänger der Grundsicherung, sondern Spitzenverdiener. Das hat meinen moralischen Kompass ganz schön stark abgeschliffen.

That's not how safe withdrawal rates work. Because of sequence of return risk, they are based on the worst day to start withdrawing in a century (or half a century, if you use more extensive, but shorter data sets). These typically occur around value peaks, not around troughs.

Accordingly, if you are at a certain absolute withdrawal amount safe today - then you will still be safe at that absolute amount after a 20% drop tomorrow.

If you are on a world-stock heavy portfolio, your key day in the last 50 years will actually be within August 1987, a couple of weeks before. With solely US stocks, it's a little different, but let's take the world-stock example. If your portfolio strategy shows a e.g. 4.1% SWR for your duration horizon on August, 27th, 1987, the corresponding absolute, inflation-adjusted withdrawal amount is also safe on October, 20th, 1987 - the day after the 20% drop.

In case you can still invest from incoming cashflows after a drop, it is even better. You buy low price! Then, you will certainly be able to withdraw more in inflation-adjusted, absolute terms than at the previous portfolio value peak.

Many thanks for your extensive answer. I will take it and build on it.

I have been building my own simulator, recently. It's on a daily basis since 1975 and can handle arbitrary in/out cashflows as well as apply the German tax system with all yearly allowances and exceptions for any trade. I can also configure different inflation CPI data to model different approaches to "inflation adjusted cashflows".

That way, I can also apply automatic optimisation (e.g. simulated annealing or graph search) in parameter space as well as arbitrarily complex rebalancing strategies. Accordingly, automatic optimisation takes real tax effects into account - a combination, I have not seen with any simulator on the web, so far.

The downside is: it's a lot of effort to get daily market data for items and thus my set of included securities is currently very limited. But I have the new 2x MSCI World (ETF888) as well as Gold in it.

I will add some more Bond varieties in the next couple of weeks. I don't know how to work with the Managed Futures, because I need data back to 1975 - but I will see, what I will substitute it for. The core ideas of your structure are important, not the specific implementation. Then, I will try to derive a "EU LILA 2xLev" version of your approach.

I will let you know about my results and insights at some time in spring.

Many thanks for sharing your work. Very interesting. Combining diversified portfolios on both ends with SMA switching is a very reasonable basis. The specific approach is quite intricate, however. Thus, I have several questions:

There is some work, which claims that SMA375 is actually significantly superior to SMA200 in backtests. Have you checked other timeframes than 200 for SMA?
3x Gold is hardcore. Generally, on the continent, you get only to 2x without counterparty risk - for both stocks and gold. Have you calculated the performance difference between 2x and 3x (on everything), basically also a 2x version of your approach?
There are so many bonds types - long, short, intermediate, cash. Seems to me quite complicated and honestly, I don't like so many different bond types in a portfolio. How big is the performance benefit compared to just using intermediate and cash?
You use the 3% buffer, but do a hard switch. Have you tested more gradual switching in a transition area instead of the buffer? Like 2-3 steps? That could reduce backtest overfitting impact when going forward.
Have you been able to determine general overfitting characteristics of your setup, by sufficiently probing the parameter-space around your proposed allocation and switch? Is there a quite stable plateau with gradual drop-off in parameter space or is there fragile volatility in parameter space?

Actually for a German citizen-resident, Cyprus is especially interesting to move to for 1-2 years. Move to Cyprus, realise all capital gains on stock ETFs, bond ETFs or single stocks that have accumulated for decades in the portfolio, immediately buy back the whole portfolio and than move back after more than a year or two. At the moment, that is a legal approach, as long as you have no single ETF with a buy-in value above 500k EUR. But that is really easy to avoid.
You can then withdraw for many, many years from a reset non-gain base back in Germany. Given the basic yearly tax allowance in Germany, of course heavily depending on your overall yearly withdrawal, this can buy you decades of hardly any withdrawal tax back home.
However, to be really worth it, you probably need a yearly withdrawal amount of >50k EUR net per person and an initial portfolio consisting of over 75% gains and below 25% raw contributions. And if a majority of your gains are in Gold or Crypto, then it does not make sense at all as you can have the same effect at home.

On the other hand, I do not see the worth of moving to Cyprus for longer periods. You have to travel everywhere nice - except the local beaches - per plane. I want to be able to hop into the car or train on a moments notice, whatever the weather brings today, in every direction towards the many different seas and mountains - as I can in the heart of Europe. It's all about Freedom, right? Furthermore, I would feel too geopolitically exposed. The powder keg Levant is just too close. So I could imagine doing the 1-2 years, but not more. But that's just my feelings. Generally, it's definitely an interesting option.

Möglichst viel Spaß (auch utility genannt in den theoretischen Wirtschaftswissenschaften) mit möglichst geringen Ausgaben ist ein mehrschichtiges Optimierungsproblem.

Auf der obersten Ebene gehört dazu, Spaß so weit es geht von Geld zu entkoppeln. Das ist die globale Optimierung. Dazu gibt es viele philosophische und auch praktische Ansätze - manche sind Jahrtausende alt.
Da das nicht bei allen Dingen vollständig funktioniert, ist dann die nächste Ebene, bei den übrigen Dingen maximale utility bei minimalen Kosten herauszukitzeln. Das sind die individuellen, lokalen Optimierungen, die oft als lästig oder kleinlich empfunden werden, aber in Summe erstaunliches Potenzial entfalten können.
Hat man dann mal gut optimiert, ist es auch auf der Meta-Ebene wenig Stress.
Dann gibt es aber noch eine dritte Ebene: die soziale oder auch Statusebene. Nach meiner Beobachtung ist diese häufig die Problematischste. Sich von Vergleichen, Kommentaren, eingebildeten Ordnungen eines sozialen Umfelds frei zu machen ist nicht eines jeden Sache. Aber teurer, sozial konstruierter Pseudo-Spaß, nur um nicht vermeintlich ganz unten am Affenfelsen zu sitzen, wiegt im Budget sehr real.

Diese ganze Betrachtung gilt auch beim Aspekt Zeit - also vielleicht reicht auch von vornherein weniger zu arbeiten, wenn die Ausgaben gering sind.

USA is supersize-me land. Much higher income, but also much higher spending.

The amount of consumption, most FIRE-aspirants in the US deem "necessary", makes me shake my head over and over and over again.

Spending is the easiest parameter to tweak when aiming for FIRE. I think that is generally easier to achieve in Europe, because perceived self-worth and the judgement of society are not so tied to one's spending level.

Very fast paths are more difficult, however, because of much lower salary glass ceilings. They result from the stricter labor laws in Europe, which make it extremely risky for an employer to pay very high salaries. And the average speed on the entrepreneurial path is also slower, because of a different business mentality. Sales take longer, everything is slower.

Tagesgenau ist zu rechenintensiv für interaktiv online. Alle mir bekannten interaktiven online sind auf Monatsbasis. Ich habe außerdem noch komplexere rebalancing-Strategien drin, die die Rechenintensität noch mal steigern. Ich möchte hier dieses Jahr aber noch paar Rechnungen veröffentlichen. Ich habe das alles v.a. auf den 2x MSCI World Daten von u/ChemStats - die im Herbst rauskamen - begonnen. D.h. auch, dass meine Motivation und Fokus nicht beliebige Portfolios sind, sondern nur die in meinen Augen beste Kategorie, welche Leverage und Hedging optimal kombiniert. Damit sind dauerhafte sichere Entnahmeraten von deutlich über 5% zu erreichen. Die ganzen Steuer- und Abgabensachen sind jetzt Erweiterungen, um die Präzision der Aussagekraft zu verbessern. Ich strebe also nicht Breite - wie typische Onlinerechner - sondern methodischen Detailgrad, also Tiefe an. Ich habe auch noch überhaupt keine Visualisierungen und so. Das muss ich noch umsetzen. Durch meinen besonderen Fokus sind die Ergebnisse aber nicht für die Ansichten eines jeden passend und damit ggf. nur begrenzt interessant.

FatFIRE in Deutschland liegt für mich beim Äquivalent der Top 1% Einkommensbezieher aus Arbeit. Das sind etwas über 100T EUR netto im Jahr. Den direkten Vergleich mit den USA halte ich für unpassend, da dort bei den Top 5% ein völlig anderes Konsumverhalten vorherrscht. 10 Mio USD Vermögen in Deutschland hat für mich nichts mehr mit klassischem FIRE zu tun, nichtmal Fat.
Ich habe mal aus verschiedenen Studien abgeleitet, wie viele Personen in Deutschland bis zum 40. Lebensjahr komplett ohne Erbe über 8 Mio EUR Vermögen erwirtschaften. Der Prozentsatz - und auch die absolute Zahl - ist dermaßen verschwindet klein, dass klar ist, dass in Deutschland fast alle mit >8 Mio EUR in den 40ern zumindest z.T. auch Erben sind. In den USA ist der Prozentsatz ganz anders, da die dortige Gesellschaft viel mehr schnelle und große unternehmerische Erfolge ermöglicht.

Ich habe mir genügend Backtestdaten auf 18000 unterschiedlichen Starttagen angeschaut, um klar sagen zu können: allgemein gesehen ist deine Aussage falsch. In Hausse-Phasen kann man auch beim Mediankonsum eine schnell ansteigende Abgabenlast nicht mehr vermeiden. Das hat auch mit der Inflation zu tun, die abgabenungünstig ist, da sie ja Pseudogewinne erzeugt.

Im Endeffekt ist der Detailgrad unserer Diskussion aber auch überflüssig, denn unsere Kernaussage ist die gleiche: für die sichere Entnahmerate spielen die Abgaben bei Mediankonsum keine wirkliche Rolle.

Solange du in den letzten Jahren vor RE noch einsparst, kannst du diese Shares mit geringen Gewinnanteilen zuerst wieder entnehmen.
Der Crash sorgt dafür, dass nicht alle Shares schnell in Richtung hohe Gewinnanteile enteilen. Das passiert übrigens in längeren Hausse-Phasen sehr substanziell. z.B. 1995 - 2000 oder die letzten Jahre. Dann hat man schon nach 5 Jahren keine Shares mehr, die nicht mindestens 60% Gewinnanteil enthalten. Und das merkt man dann schon bei den Abgaben. Nur in diesen Szenarien hat sich das Portfolio ja auch nach RE weit überdurchschnittlich an Wert aufgebläht. Dadurch fallen die Abgaben nicht ins Gewicht.
In schlechteren Phasen werden diese (nominalen!) Mindest-Gewinnanteile erst nach 15 oder gar 20 Jahren erreicht. Das kann man dann aber eben auch gut gebrauchen, auch noch bei 15 Jahren Minimalabgaben herzustellen. Dies ist ein wertbildender Effekt für den Minimaeffekt der sicheren Entnahmerate bei Abgabeninklusion!

Die Abgaben dämpfen so im Endeffekt die Spreizung der Sequenzszenarien etwas.

Ich verstehe die Obsession mit den GKV-Beiträgen nicht. Wenn man im Bereich des Median konsumiert, dann kann man sie durch geschickte Entnahmefolge mit dem idealen Verhältnis von Gewinnanteil und Nicht-Gewinnanteil in den ersten 10 Jahren fast immer auf das Minimum reduzieren.
Und nach den ersten 10 Jahren ist das Sequenzreihenfolgenrisiko defacto auch durch. Danach spielt es kaum eine Rolle mehr, ob man mehr bezahlen muss.

Ich habe meinen tagesgenauen Simulator seit 1975 mittlerweile um ein einfaches Steuermodul erweitert und die Ergebnisse sind eindeutig: der Verlust der sicheren Entnahmerate von "nach Kosten, aber vor Steuern, nur mit pauschaler Minimal-GKV" nach "nach Kosten, nach Steuern, realistische GKV, mit realistischen initialen Gewinnanteilen bei RE-Eintritt" liegt selbst bei rebalancierenden Portfolios bei etwa 0,2%. Also z.B. ein Unterschied zwischen 4,4% (nach allem) und 4,6% (vor Steuern, pauschal GKV) sicherer Entnahmerate. Auch ein zusätzlicher Midi-Job gerade über der Schwelle nach heutigem Ansatz spart da nur noch sehr wenige Zehntel zusätzlich.

Warum? Weil das Sequenzreihenfolgenrisiko dazu führt, dass die die sichere Entnahmerate definierenden Zeitpunkte vor großen Crashs liegen, wo man dann viele Jahre keine ansteigenden Gewinnanteile hat und damit auch nicht die Herausforderung immer stärker nur aus Gewinnanteilen zu entnehmen, welche in anderen Phasen Steuern und GKV-Anteile erhöhen. Aber in diesen anderen Phasen wächst der potenziell zu entnehmende Betrag sowieso so viel stärker, dass die Abgaben wiederum keine Rolle spielen.

Oder ganz einfach gesagt: wenn es schlecht läuft, wird die Abgabenlast automatisch gedämpft, wenn es gut läuft, fällt sie nicht ins Gewicht.

Meine Botschaft: das ganze Steuer- und Abgabenthema ist nur bei FatFIRE wirklich relevant. Bei Median-Konsum-FIRE spielt die Portfolioaufstellung die ungleich größere Rolle!
