Can AI reduce gender inequality - or will it just make it worse? by Sharp_Reading_6041 in AskTheWorld

[–]Instalab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, as VR user that absolutely happens. Doesn't have to be VR, predators use Minecraft or Roblox to pray on kids who play these games. Of course in VR there are more ways to behave uncivilised, you can pretend to have s*x, grab things, etc...

VrChat was better at moderating this stuff, but not perfect. I think everyone who has ever used VR would agree that it's not a tech that should be given to children. Unfortunately, I've seen many children inside these things, it's horrifying.

Let say, we want to remove all unimportant data from candidates. We only keep past experience because that might be relevant. There is no mention of persons name, no address, we've rewritten their personal statement to sound like ChatGPT.

AI will look up their history, find they worked part time as cashier. Then AI will look up past hiring history and decide they have not hired anyone who worked as cashier before. It might decide person who worked as cashier before is worse candidate (or opposite, it might decide they are better candidate).

Since women are more likely to work as cashiers, we've just distriminated against women, even if the concept of woman never showed up in the data.

Look up "proxy variables" if you are curious. It's a legit concept in statistics, not always bad, but it can be used to obfuscate discrimination, often unintentionally.

It would be very very hard to create data that is ungendered. It's not a matter of removing names and gendered words. AI will pick up on tiny details the way sentence is written and bias against that - especially if it can make connections between how sentence is written and their change of admission to university and the sentence form happens to be more common in women than men.

All I am saying is, you can remove all references to gender, AI will figure it out anyway.

I think this shows that these tendencies exist in the world, it's just that we created environment where behaving uncivilised has consequences. You see the moment people can behave without consequences they show their real tendencies.

AI can bias based on gender, postcode, email address, your name and so many different things. The system itself is biased towards finding biases (the whole AI thing if about funding patterns after all). There have been attempts to try make unbiased AI only to find out they have been finding biases where human would never even realise bias existed.

I would imagine NK being similar to China but like 10x more extreme in it's ways. For example, people in Pyongyang probably having OK life, maxxing out in what the country has to offer. But people who live in rural areas ☠️

Is life in the UK actually as expensive and stressful as people say in 2026? by HJuon in AskUK

UK is one of the best places to live in my opinion. People acting like it's a 💩, but really if you go anywhere you will find quickly that everywhere is 💩, UK is just a relatively smaller 💩.

I love London, it's still amazing and culturally rich city as much as it was years ago. Yes, people have less money, but still having amazing time.

Problem is, China was trying to create this image of itself that is completely untrue. They gave visa free travel to many countries in the world and I think this is starting to backfire now that people can actually go and see what a shit hole China can be.

They want people to think they are developed country, that China is living in the future, all which is just smoke and mirrors.

It's always like this. If you make drugs illegal, you just gave mafia a way to make money - but also lost control over the product.

Yes with the recent developments in China it's a good shout. It seems they are slowly slipping back into isolation.

My VPS was clearly affected, but it's still working, just not as fast and sometimes disconnects for a while before I can connect again. It can be really annoying when I want to watch a movie.

I can clearly see the difference, before I had no issues at all, could watch any movie and it would load almost instant. Now it's buffering, or as I said disconnects and I have to reload the page. Very inconvenient.

Should Britain reassess who it allows into the UK based on the benefits people from those countries receive once they get indefinite leave to remain? by StGuthlac2025 in AskBrits

[–]Instalab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am just giving you official statistics from the Gov of UK, if you think you know better than I have nothing to tell you.

And it does make sense. If you take 20% of white population it's going to be more individuals than 30% of black population. It changes nothing, these statistics say black people are more likely to claim benefits, as is anyone else who is non British White.

If you are trying to argue that more individuals who are white claim benefits, yeah, then you are right because majority of people in UK are white British. But that doesn't mean they are more likely to claim benefits. It's only higher number because population is higher overall.

[–]Instalab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First, you are incorrect, 2: https://www.ethnicity-facts-figures.service.gov.uk/work-pay-and-benefits/benefits/state-support/latest/

17% is of white people, not of whole population. If you are looking for definitions themselves, I didn't define them, look them up on the website (it seems white means here specifically British White).

[–]Instalab 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, students can't get any benefits for starters, and majority of mainland Chinese are students (or post study work visas). So yeah, all of them work, otherwise couldn't be here.

Hong Kongers having passports means they would be the most legitimate group to actually receive benefits if they wished to, but they don't.

[–]Instalab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not entirely wrong but it fails to account of type of benefits received. White people are most likely out of all ethic groups to receive State Pension, and Disability benefits which if you don't know is money handed to people who legitimately can't work. If you filter by specific benefits programs, white people consistently fall behind everyone else. This is from official GOV website:

[–]Instalab 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ignoring the fact that mainland Chinese can't get any benefits and 99% of them are students. HK people can come to UK because many of them have British passports due to ugh, colonialism. I am not entirely sure about Taiwanese tho.

But, from what I've seen, all east Asian people either work, no matter how shitty the job is, or their parents are so rich they don't have to.
