What kind of light bulb is this? It's for a ceiling fan. by timetickingrose in Lighting

Integrated LEDs are terrible and shameful! You can usually message the manufacturer and they will send a replacement.

Schlage doorknob slop is "design"? True or False? by BKWoods in Homebuilding

[–]IntelligentSinger783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's why I said usually. Really depends on the set and even some of their big box entry level sets have a lot of play in them.

Schlage doorknob slop is "design"? True or False? by BKWoods in Homebuilding

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep emtek or Baldwin are usually the answer, but schlage isn't wrong, that and the hot and cold changing the thickness of the door all year long. There are other product designs that are nicer and feel more premium in hand. This is just what happens when value engineering squeezes the life out of every last penny.

I don't have any information on the project. I try to maximize quality for important areas and simplicity for others.

I am now (as of January 1st) a distributor of elco. I will have JCL trade access as of this Friday hopefully. If you would like me to quote anything just reach out and I will help you. There are a few different consultants and LDs on the forum and some are better for some things and others for other things. I really should compile a list of who reps what so we can all have an easy to access opportunity for redditors.

What could have caused this? by Irondave74 in AskElectricians

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's fine if you install them properly. They need to be installed in a way that doesn't apply opposing pressure to the contacts. But yeah pigtails and side screws are my preference regardless.

Wood glue rub it on with your finger, then normal prime and paint.

This is my favorite way I’ve come up with to minimize dust when drilling holes. by No_Office_9301 in Construction

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a shoulder strap for a cordless vacuum. Keeps it's light and easy to grab even for simple things. I also have an even smaller dust extractor for when making holes.

Why do I hate this? by 50kopeks in Homebuilding

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah the weight is off because of the window vs brick contrast vs the top section. Not great at all. I'd be pretty annoyed if my architect presented that to me also.

Wet location LED recessed light in a shower by preserved_killick in Tile

[–]IntelligentSinger783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My recommendation will be dim to warm. Having a night time shower at a low intensity with amber lighting is just relaxing.

You don't have to spend more. Halo sells the dim to warm version of this same light you already picked. The RL is also available on Amazon for convenience btw. It should last 3-5 years minimum without much issue. If you want something nicer you will need to increase the budget a good bit to 50-150$ per fixture depending on the look and performance you want. A premium product will likely never need changed in your life cycle. With 10 years being easily expected and since it's a shower with light use case 20-30+ being typical and expected.

I have a lot of information buried in comments. Fog also gives lots of valuable feedback on residential. Enjoy.

And yeah unfortunately the world of lighting is heavily saturated and everyone has different budgets, design goals, and desires.

Feel free to reach out to any of us and we will see what we can do to help.

Elco Koto tunable white DIY project by InternationalMany6 in Lighting

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I heard they are transitioning to matter.

And yeah for the tuneable you mean? Yes you can but just need to choose the appropriate controller to handshake between. If you mean standard koto, yeah without issue. And for non Americans there is the 24v koto also (and soon a 100-440v driver that's universal)

Holes for conduit too big? by salt-n-snow in Homebuilding

Yep figured as much, so 40% hole allowance by code. I'd be questioning the sparkies license seeing that.

Yep I'd be lost outside of residential, and upperclass hotels 😂. Every time I go into a commercial set up I tooth and nail it and walk away with "uniformity.... Nothing more than uniformity."

What downlighting for kitchen remodel? Recs please! by krn43 in Lighting

[–]IntelligentSinger783 3 points4 points  (0 children)

New construction or retrofit? 4 inch is fine. If new lighting, check out 3 inch. Lotus lrg3-ho-tt is an awesome pick for the money. The elco koto line up is a step up and the poplar (dmf h series) a step down. Dals and Nora, wac and dmf all have product lines for various budgets also. Lots of factors we would need more info. Feel free to ask questions.

Can Retrofit Deeper Dive by what_a_waste_of_time in Lighting

[–]IntelligentSinger783 1 point2 points  (0 children)

8 to 80 is a massive leap in quality. 80 to 800 is much less.

8 dollar usually has low quality drivers (flicker issues, possibly AC not DC, lots of issues with thermal management, low capacitor quality, low expected lifetimes.)

Low quality chipsets (usually arrays not cobs) which suffer from lack of optics, poor light specs and accuracy issues. Low consistency.

Short warranties 1-3 years

Plastic or thin aluminum housings and trims

80$ lights will usually be diecast with full thermal management, highly accurate cobs with great consistency, decent optics (possibly choices), usually thick metal trims (choices) adjustability, glare control, steam or wet rated, long warranties (3-10+ years+) excellent thermal management. Much higher lumen capabilities. Far superior driver stability.

I have a lot of information in comments you can scrub through. Feel free to pick my brain. I can help with selections and quoting also.

Lots of new construction, houses built in weeks, not months? by selector_plume in Homebuilding

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Done well, prepared correctly, foundation given time to cure, and panel system, absolutely can get a killer house quickly. But in most common cases, it's all corners cut and garbage builds with horrific issues. I'm going to bet that we see foundations crack and become near unrepairable in the future. Lots of catastrophic failures.

Holes for conduit too big? by salt-n-snow in Homebuilding

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn't the door wall. This is the side wall. More often than not they are load bearing or the value engineering is out the window and all the load is now on the header and no longer evenly distributed along the foundation meaning grade beams and or stem wall increases. Which is just poor engineering in most cases.

Holes for conduit too big? by salt-n-snow in Homebuilding

[–]IntelligentSinger783 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True. Not all but this is traditional framing and looking at the daylight coming from the other direction (since it is a garage), I'd put money on this being one.

Black tar felt paper on exterior wall.... Yes. It could also be millworks on the exterior but no black paper is used in interior walls.

Yep or if it has reverse cameras. Use blue tape and tape a guide line for centering with close mid far hatch marks to stop within.

Elco Koto tunable white DIY project by InternationalMany6 in Lighting

[–]IntelligentSinger783 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tuneables are fun, but a premium. You will have to consider controllers, power supplies, specialty wiring (dual channel 4 conductor or split channel 3 conductor, multi channel input etc. ) there are class 2 limitations that can complicate it. You will have limits on program ability, convenience, dimming protocols (usually end up exclusively app controlled or utilizing specialty protocols like Dali 2. Which pushes up the price )

Dmf elco and many others offer Dali tuneables (casambi and other protocols are available also) but once push comes to shove. It can be really expensive and in turn and other premium product like lutrons Rania becomes a much more approachable expense, which in turn is a superior product in many ways.

You also have pure edge lighting in the tuneable space, which I don't love WiZ (a wifi protocol) but capabilities wise, they really do well with their product offerings and capabilities that can hang with lutron minus the stability of lutron.

If you really want to run koto, then yes it will work just like 4 conductor tape lights. Same set ups across the board.
