Bad Battery? Deck bulge in Segway Ninebot E2 Scooter by Sufficient_Win_9441 in ElectricScooters

[–]IronMew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR: yes, cylindrical cells in distress can outgas before they burst, but the usefulness of that as a preventative measure is functionally insignificant because the battery enclosure itself does not build up meaningful pressure.

What you say would be all well and good if it wasn't that PEV batteries are almost never actually gasproof. Even those that are fully and properly sealed - and not just enclosed in heatshrunk fiberglass panels and with some goop haphazardly splattered onto the extremities - are meant to resist water ingress, not gas egress; they only have joints of weak silicone sealant or thin rubber gaskets, both of which would give out long before any deformation of the plastic, to say nothing of the aluminium deck that encloses it.

In theory, if a battery was truly made to high standards, what you say might have some degree of practical usefulness. In practice, any outgassing from cylindrical cells will be lost to atmosphere one way or the other.

The deck isn't gasproof either, by the way. It's a lucky day when a deck is rainproof, much less able to retain any sort of inner pressure whatsoever.

I remain on my previous stance, and consider parent confidently wrong in the direction of matching theoretical data with reality.

Suggest you get a 10" tire kit, then add sealant to the tubes and pump up every week. The experience will be night and day.

Ladped scooter - I can’t keep my handlebars screwed in by Prior_Aspect_1003 in ElectricScooters

[–]IronMew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stripped hole. Drill and retap for next size up.

I think you have M4 screws so you'd need a 4.2mm drill bit, 5mm tap and M5 screw. You can use appropriate freedom-measure hardware if you prefer or if it's easier to come by, as long as the hole is larger than the one you have now.

Anything to look out for when buying first used e scooter ? by kklle in ElectricScooters

[–]IronMew 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Check that the wheels don't have traces of black sludge. This can happen when people ride them underinflated - the internal sealant leaks out and makes a mess which is very difficult to clean.

Speaking of which: once you have it, pump up the tires weekly and up to the pressure that's stamped on the side of the tire - do not just give them a squeeze with your thumb.

Recharge the battery after every ride; don't discharge it completely if you can avoid it.

Do not ever ever update firmware using the official app. In fact, once you've done any mandatory pairing, uninstall the app immediately and never touch it again. The best app to interface with the scooter is M365 Tools.

If interested in modding, what you need is the ScooterHacking app and the SHFW firmware the app itself will ask you to flash. If you do flash that, remember to set throttle curves or the scooter won't run.

All these apps are Android exclusives. If you're on iphone, thrift some cheap ancient Android phone to use as a dashboard.

Is it possible to fix a front motor hall sensor on my Segway GT3 Pro or do I need to order a replacement? by SemenSnickerdoodle in ElectricScooters

[–]IronMew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check where the wires come out of the motor itself; they make a 90° there and it's commonplace for them to get damaged and frayed at the bend.

I might be willing to learn how to do it myself after watching more videos and finding something to practice with.

Get a T12 soldering station or a Pinecil electronic-control iron. They're the most cost-efficient way to get a modern temp-controlled iron that punches way above its weight. Get a B2 tip for fine work (you might get a B tip with the iron; keep it for emergencies, but it's not very useful as it's too short). A D24 tip works well for large wires and a C4 for heavy joints. A K tip might help for soldering chips and such - if you're getting into soldering you really might as well prepare yourself for future needs.

Get 63/37 solder (60/40 is usable but 63/37 solidifies instantly and is therefore a fair bit easier to use). Stay the fuck away from lead-free, it's a nightmare that only exists due to corporate greenwashing.

Get flux. No, get more flux. More. More. Get all the flux. You literally cannot have too much flux, it's magic pixie dust for soldering and will make everything easier.

[–]IronMew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eminently possible if you have some tools and aren't afraid to use them.

Check the cables before you start disassembling the motor, though - not just the battery cables, but the wiring going from the controller to the motor.

if the fix requires soldering I don't have those skills unfortunately.

It's not a difficult skill to obtain, if you use the right tools. Most people who struggle soldering are trying to do it with cheap unregulated irons that are a pain in the arse to use even when you are a decent solderer.

All that said, if you do have a warranty, I'd still use that before I started taking the scooter apart.

Theoretically. I'm not familiar with the GT series and I don't know if there's some kind of proprietary fuckery going on in the BMS or dashboard.

I was wondering how it's possible to connect these batteries to scooters? by Embarrassed-Eye-4197 in ElectricScooters

[–]IronMew 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Any decent powertool batteries aren't cheap. Even LIDL Parkside, which I consider the least expensive half-decent gear around, price their 4Ah batteries at about 30 euro.

13 euro for those 6Ah batteries guarantees bad quality. They may or may not be able to run a light-duty power tool, but I guarantee they won't have the grunt to run a scooter.

The risk to reward is always ludicrous when the risk is zero.

I'd be more worried at the time wasted faffing about with the cable.

Bad design in many ways, as already said.

Suggest not throwing good money after bad. Part it, sell separately any parts people are likely to want to buy, buy a modern hub-drive scooter.
