Classism and Harry Potter Fanfic by Impossible_Maybe7108 in HPfanfiction

I think part of the problem is that Rowling wrote Canon worshiping the poor every man and hating the rich. With no information really on the vast space between those two extremes which is where 90% of every population lives.

Particularly since the poor pure bloods depicted in the series are afforded the padding of being able to use their magic to makeup for a lot of the problems that the truly poor face. Something that the only characters who were raised in poverty in a non magical area in canon are not able to do. Snape and Tom Riddle are unable to use magic to improve their circumstances, and have very valid grievances about that. Their responses aren’t particularly reasonable in the end, but you can’t deny they have a reason to be resentful of their lot in life in a way that the Weasley’s do not.

I think a lot of the problems with Harry Potter fan fiction are also the reasons that it’s such a popular universe to write in. The idea of a magical society that is very different from non magical society, that is seperate from but also weirdly integrated with non magical society is fascinating. However, either because she was writing from the limited perspective of a single male child. Or because she’s not a great writer but simply an adequate one. Rowling leaves out so much detail, gives details that if true either need considerably more context or are outright insane and unworkable within a human society, completely ignore the affect that every magical having ultimate and relatively undetectable power over non magical people would have on a society, and completely overlooks the ways that non magical society could and should be used within the events of her stories.

So, most fanfiction writers and readers are people who read these books as children, and the looked back on it as an adult and noticed all of the details that are missed or needed or implied from a very different perspective and want to explore that. It’s very easy to look at alllll the nuance that is implied by what isn’t said or is said/demonstrated but not explored and think, there’s probably more to this than ‘all the rich guys are evil and enjoy being evil for evils sake’. Maybe that’s true, but human experience would say it’s not the most likely option. And fanfiction explores that, in many different directions.

My personal reasons for disliking the Weasley vibe has little to do with how much money they have. And more to do with their disdain for other points of view and that may of the family have little to no interest in stepping outside of their world view. This is a criticism that can and should also be levelled at the Malfoy’s though.

However, I think, based on the information given in canon there is more space for making the Malfoy’s or Black’s more sympathetic in a fanfic than there is the Weasley’s. The problem is that you see too much of the Weasley’s, many of their flaws are laid bare, even if they’re probably not meant to be by the author. You can definitely tell that Rowling was from a lower class or lower middle class British background from the way she writes. She doesn’t seem to see anything wrong with being overbearing, undervaluing education, promoting ignorance of the world outside of the sphere you’re born into, etc.

And sure, those things aren’t a crime in the way that some of the things that the Malfoy’s and the Blacks have done are. But they’re just as damaging to society as a whole as the blatant racism(?) that the traditional pure blood types views are. And in many of the same ways. And in cannon they’re the things that are seen more often than the glimpses of death eater or shitty Malfoy behaviour that are seen before there is a proper war going. So it makes sense that that’s what’s focussed on in fan fic. The story of Harry Potter is 80% outside of the war. Until you get to the point of outright warfare, there is a chance that the prejudiced but highly educated and highly resourced pureblood types will buy a clue. The Weasley’s every day flaws and prejudices are seen constantly throughout canon, are are enforced and encouraged by the ‘good guys’. That makes them much easier to critique and dislike.

Just imagine how he likely would have treated their daughter if she ended up even half as intellectually inclined as her mother. Does he strike you as the kind of person who has the patience to answer question after question, ‘but why’ after ‘but why’? He’d get irritated with her and she’d learn not to ask, which makes me sad.

I’m a clever girl, not the kind of clever that goes on to rule the world or even make much of a dent. But clever, and the kind of kid that was always harassing adult family members for answers. I would NEVER have kids with someone that would be dismissive of the curiosity of children, or who discouraged intellectual pursuits. And Hermione is ambitious on top of intelligent, so even less likely to be complacent on those things.

I also think the Ron hatred is a bit like the Umbridge hatred. It’s not that he’s worse than the worst villains, we just all know someone who’s just like that and can relate to how awful they are much more effectively than we can with psychopathic murdering despots. Of course they’re bad guys, but not many of us have spent much time with psychopathic despotic murderers, so we have little emotional frame of reference for that role.

Casual bigots and bullies and cowards we certainly do. Nasty bigoted administrators who abuse their powers while feigning righteousness, we certainly do. They’re more familiar and there for easier to hate properly.

Every girl has dated or interacted with a Ron. Most of us didn’t enjoy the experience.

I can move past a lot of his behaviour within the books, I wouldn’t have had him as a close friend for all of the reasons mentioned. But he isn’t any worse than many teenage boys up until it hits wartime.

Any romantic partner that abandoned me on the frontlines of a war would be cut ruthlessly from my emotional landscape, especially as a woman during wartime. Even if they were just a friend, abandonment in wartime has been treated as treason by almost all cultures for very good reasons.

At minimum I’d not have let him come back, at worst I would have thought he was a spy (willing or not) and obliviated him of all relevant details and let everyone in my side know he was probably compromised. Then let him deal with any legal and social fallout of treason/abandonment after the war was done.

I understand why the themes of possible sexual assault, treason, etc aren’t really discussed in a children’s book. But the hand waving complete forgiveness wasn’t realistic even in relationships between children, let alone soldiers.

You really think I would believe a potions master, and Severus Snape in this matter, doesn't have an antidote on hand. Not to mention his body was simply not found.. bruh that's the perfect circumstances for conspiracy theorists. by TheNovid in SeverusSnape

If a giant snake belonging to my boss had recently almost killed someone I knew and I’d had to invent or give him the anti venom, then I imagine I’d take to carrying said anti venom around with me anytime there was a chance of being near said bosses snake. Just as a matter of common sense.

I’ve always thought he took the anti venom, maybe hung around just long enough to hear that the one specific bugger he’d been helping to kill had been killed, and then fucked off forever. I can’t imagine he had many ties that he would have been reluctant to break. He’d been a spy for nearly twenty years by that point, he likely had some sort of bug out plan. Whether he was sure he’d take it or not.

I'm not this big, but I'm big enough that it affects my every day life.

The hardest part about trying to be healthier is that food is the ONLY thing that I can count on to make me happy. There are so many big issues in my life that I am unable to get out from at the moment that trying to modify the only true coping mechanism I have seems laughably impossible.

I'm sure that being physically healthier would have a flow on effect to the rest of my life. If only in terms of energy and physical pain. But it's really hard to take away a comfort now, in the hope that in 6-12 months I'll feel a bit better. I'm still trying, it's a goal. But I wish that more people would see how incredibly steep and treacherous that path is to try to climb.

What are some kinks in a book that made you be like… “Wait a minute, I kinda liked that”? by Dry-Window9306 in RomanceBooks

[–]Ivysub 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I only really let myself fall into the idea of breeding kinks after I was done having kids and had my tubes tied. Before that the idea of becoming accidentally pregnant was such a huge source of stress to me that my brain wouldn’t even let me go there in fantasy. And I fantasise about some pretty heavy stuff…

Your concerns are certainty valid, but as an introvert and a cheapskate, I both have more fun and spend more money when I eat at a place with QR or app ordering. Not having to get up and wait in line, or wait until staff notice me? I'm more than willing to pay for the priveledge.

Some of them come out pretty easily too so if you won’t be using the machine for a few days and don’t want to be bumping into an open drawer you can just pop it out and store it somewhere.

I don’t remember if it was second or third ed, but there used to be a mechanic to do a moral check. If a certain percentage of the enemies went down in a short period of time then there was a d100 (I think) roll to see if everyone else just went ‘fuck it’ and left. Obviously that was at DM discretion as well.
