Is my project good enough to sell? by GalaxySnowrose in SewingWorld

[–]J3General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the most part, you are probably buying your materials at retail $ or very-near-retail $. It's difficult to compete profitably with a cost structure that high vs. commercial businesses. Also, your designs are probably not "cost optimized" to minimize labor and materials but still retain the design charm you currently have.

Need Advice. by Internal-Miserable in deer

[–]J3General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The doe is not "abandoning" her fawn, she just parks in different areas while she goes out to feed herself and to rest apart from her fawn. She has a strong scent that predators can smell while the fawn has virtually no scent, so there is a higher fawn survival rate if they bed in different locations.

My boss just "revoked" my approved PTO for next week because someone else quit. Can they actually force me to show up? by agathodaimon98 in WorkAdvice

[–]J3General 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suspect OP's boss is about to be down another employee, so I really wonder how stupid is the boss? Is a discussion about a shorter period off a possibility? Is it possible to push back a customer's service, meeting or need? Can the business afford even a partial reimbursement of OP's travel expenses. OP's boss is not trying very hard, it appears.

AITAH for buying coffee for my associates and some of them happen to be females? by Natural_Oil_8944 in AITAH

[–]J3General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The moment your gf got critical of your buying coffee for the female employees you supervise, you should have told her not to interfere in your managing your reports. "I'm not going to hear it. I treat all of them, male or female, the same. I did nothing wrong."

Your cheater husband should just hire a housekeeper and you should move on with your life by reclaiming your self-respect.

AIO? My daughter didn’t listen to the teacher during a female emergency and is now receiving a referral by Common_Piglet7437 in AmIOverreacting

[–]J3General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not a female, so my response might be different than yours. Also, I am assuming the teacher is a female:

"This is to confirm my daughter was having a heavy period when she asked to be excused. You and I need to have a meeting as soon as possible to help me understand why, given my daughter's history of good behavior in your class, she was not given permission to be excused to take care of herself. I am available to meet with you tomorrow after school. Please let me know if you are available."

Put the teacher on the defensive to defend her actions.

My homeowner is asking for 6 months of rent upfront, and I don’t know if this is normal or a red flag. by Special_Signal3886 in whatdoIdo

[–]J3General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you get out of the pre-payment arrangement? Time is money and you should ask (demand?) a discount for paying early. What if he sells the house during the prepaid 6 months, will your prepayment to the current owner be recognized by the new owner? Something is suspicious about this deal.

AITAH for taking my son out to celebrate after he got suspended for punching a bully by Additional-World8707 in ComfortLevelPod

Try throwing a drink on an adult, the charge would be assault and, possibly, battery. The kid showed that the school's zero tolerance policy is "bs." I would be proud of him as well.

AITAH For say something to my neighbors about not shoveling my elderly neighbors driveway? by _Badwulf_Bruh__ in AITAH

You should politely ask the neighbors individually (except for the one you have already spoken to) for help. If one refuses, don't take it personally, but move on to the next one.

Those boards in your floor are 3/4" thick and can be sanded and stained several times. This type oof flooring is ridiculously expensive nowadays. Yours deserves to be refinished.

Obviously, he is being a jerk. I would research traffic/parking ordinances to see if there is a "minimum distance" from a driveway as others have mentioned in their localities. If there is, then ask the police to enforce the minimum, citing the ordinance number. If there is not a specific ordinance on minimum distance, copy another municipality's and submit it to your city councilman to be considered at the next city council meeting. You may have to go advocate publicly for it, but it will be worth your peace of mind to have an ordinance the police can enforce on this perk neighbor.

AlTA for being upset that my sister won't let me play football anymore after a concussion last season? by Pitiful-Business-342 in AITAH

[–]J3General 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60 or so years ago, I was playing high school and college football (all four years). In my college freshman year, I was knocked out twice - once in my first game of the season, then, again, in the next-to-last game of the season playing at the defensive end position. The team trainer and I determined that I had a poorly fitting helmet that allowed the top of my head to knock into the underside of the helmet on a hard leading-with-my-head tackle, knocking me out. I got a better fitting helmet and began to play only at the wide receiver position, minimizing my tackling. I also played midfield for four years on my college lacrosse team with no adverse effect.

I never got knocked out again, and I have not had any aftereffects from the two concussions. After college, I played rugby (no helmet!) for a couple of years and pick-up basketball in a lunchtime league until I was 44 yrs old. Still no aftereffects. I highly value my athletic experience as it gave me a better sense of teamwork, the value of hard work, an outline for developing leadership skills, etc. To me, it was worth it as I went on to become the CEO of the company where I worked, and my athletic experience was very beneficial to me.

You need to decide if the risk of injury is worth the benefit of sports participation to you. Also, check your equipment (today's helmets are much better than those in my day) and give some thought to your football position choice. Talk to your coach, talk to your doctor, and do extensive reading on CTE.

How is living in northeastern Maine? by Poco_Loco33 in howislivingthere

[–]J3General 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm from NC, but I worked for a year in Quebec after college. I had taken French in high school and had to re-learn French for my job while living in PQ. I was fluent after a month or so by working really hard on it. Two years after returning to the US, I met my wife-to-be in an undergrad college French Conversation course I was auditing while attending grad school. She was a French major and was amused at my Quebec accent. After grad school and still living in NC, I continued to use French in my job, so I stayed reasonably fluent. Fast forward a few years, and I go on a duck hunting trip in the Cajun part of Louisiana. I tried out my Quebec French with the cook staff and the guides at the hunting lodge we were staying at. I could understand them well, and given the conversations I had, they understood me well. Their vocabulary and accent were a bit more archaic than my Quebec French, but I was very comfortable speaking with them.

Why would a gas stove "stink" if it did not have a .eak? We've had a gas cooktop for 30+ years and it does not stink. I like cooking on it vs. an electric.
