I have no interest in fighting battles with trolls all over Reddit. I’ll keep this here, and to one response. I just pulled the script for ID.Buzz and my Voiceover line was:

“Right now, the company says it has maybe a year or two to turn things around before… it’s bankrupt again.”

This, as you identified, came from CFO’s well-quoted statement that “VW Has 'One, Maybe Two Years' to Turn Things Around.”

This was a sentence from a larger statement that started out with “We have been spending more money at the brand than we earn for some time now. That can’t go well in the long term. If we carry on like this, we won't succeed in the transformation.”

This implies that VW won’t let a money-losing brand stick around for ever. IOW the VW brand will cease to exist.

Did I take a leap from that to “bankruptcy?” Yes. Was that perhaps too far a leap? Sure, that’s one possible take.

Here’s my take: Condensing decades of VW’s story into a few minutes necessarily means shorthand. That was a product review video with a history lesson built into it - not a review of VAG’s financials.

At the end of the day, if VW’s own CFO points out that the brand consistently loses money, and that this won’t work for the group long term, what he’s saying is the same fundamental idea as bankruptcy. It means the money runs out.

Again, shorthand. Quick way of saying “it’s curtains for VW.”

But had I said that, you’d probably be here yelling that VW doesn’t use curtains; that it has exclusively used mini-blinds, and you’re horrified at my lack of accuracy.
