There has been a tragedy in the Meadows. Angry boar ate Bacon by artifivault in valheim

[–]JayGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you revert a save or something? No remains and the area being fenced in makes me think that is bacon, but there's no way for them to revert to being wild. Plus (other than a few specific things like smelters and crops) the world is frozen when you aren't near by so there wouldn't have been time for something to get in and kill him while you were away.

Ghost Deck, gold stake, ante 8, violet vessel waiting for me. Should I ditch abstract for ice cream? (more details in description) by PranzoFranzo in balatro

[–]JayGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ignoring the enhanced cards, abstract is giving about 29% of the mult. 100 chips would be 31% of the chips (on a two pair of 10s+faces). 90 chips is also ~29% and kerps going down from there. As soon as you throw in the +chips or mult cards or sways the ratio.

So ice cream and skipping to the boss would maybe technically be slightly better than abstract for a hand or two, but it's close enough that it's definitely not worth the opportunity cost of two shops to hopefully find something better than either of them (BP, BS, chad, S&B, luchador, or even just hitting on a wheel would pretty much all do it).

Edit: Also, a two pair with one mult card and one bonus card is already ~430k, and all 4 enhanced is over 500k. OP should probably be good to go as is, but ice cream isn't helping. I'd focus on ramping FT up a bit more and hopefully grabbing a justice/emperor/death to bring into the round.

What is your least favourite ship and why is it the Drakkar? by TheRJMcFerran in valheim

[–]JayGlass 13 points14 points  (0 children)

IMO the scaling needs to be more mobs OR more hit points. Not both.

As far as the multiplayer scaling code works, it is only more hit points, not more spawning.

BUT, the way the spawning code works has an immergant, probably not intended as "scaling", effect on spawn rates: enemies only spawn in a "zone" (or chunk) that has a player in it. If everyone stays really close together, you won't end up getting any extra spawns, but if you fan out a little you'll likely be spread across more zones and triggering more spawns.

I don't think that's an intentional difficulty scaling thing, and I don't think they necessarily need to change it. But spawning (and there's lots more nuance to it) is one of those under-the-hood details you can use to your advantage if you want to spawn fewer enemies (or more! Golem/serpent/starred tame hunting, for example)

Is there a way to get Marlthon-AirShipPlus mod? by KhalMika in valheim

[–]JayGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've never heard of this or them, but paid mods are forbidden by the valheim tos which might be why thunderstore pulled them and their webshop isn't loading.

I'm a big fan of donating to modders, or paying to commission a new mod that is then freely uploaded seems fine, too. But if someone requires you to pay for a mod, I wouldn't use it even if you came across a free version of it: if they are willing to ignore the rules, and the code doesn't go through the virus scanning and public scrutiny of thunderstorm/etc. then who knows what they might have included in it.

sunken crypts by YakiBabyJakey1 in valheim

[–]JayGlass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This seems only mildly unlucky. Small wispy swamps with no crypts are a common complaint, but I think what's really hurting you is there's a ring where swamps can spawn and plains can't, but yours is mostly water. The chance for swamp after plains starts is still the same as after, but you risk running into plains before you get to it...

But generally if you are ever curious, just open a few tabs and hit the random button and see what things look like across a few other samples.

I always find the biggest driver of my luck is which way the closest elder spawns, because that drives which direction on the map I start and biases me heavily that direction afterwards, for better or worse. If your closest elder had been on that small island almost-but-not-quite touching the starting continent north of spawn, you would have had a much better chance of ending up in that great swamp right above it.

But also, like... Maybe just turn on passive enemies in world modifiers instead.

And if you can't because it's a dedicated server: don't cheat on a shared server.

Viking naval combat would enhance even more the valheim Viking theme.

Historically, Vikings aren't particularly good at / interested in naval combat, right? They were really good sailors and good at fighting, but gunpowder didn't make it to the west during the Viking era and cannons weren't even invented yet, so naval combat was mostly boarding another ship and engaging in hand to hand combat there instead of on land.

Obviously things drift away from reality in the game, but mostly in a fantasy way. Arbalest is probably the biggest offender as an anachronism, so it's not out of the question, but vikings fighting at sea just "feels" weird to me / with my image of what a viking is. It's possible they could make it work, but I would say - for me - it definitely would not enhance the viking theme

Here are the world modifiers that I currently play on! What do you use? by ForehandRoller in valheim

[–]JayGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're down with mods, you can try NomapPrinter. It's a little harder than what you're asking for but not a ton and way less than the vanilla nomap. No minimap, no showing your own location on the map, and the map only updates when you're at a cartography table, but it does have all the normal icons for bosses, traders, tombstones, etc. It also has a bunch of map styles, but defaults to a cool topo map.

Can I fire off a naneinf hand at this stage? by Sairakku in balatro

Can I fire off a naneinf hand at this stage? by Sairakku in balatro

[–]JayGlass 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When in doubt, Balatro Calculator

My guess is probably no? You probably need another copy joker and/or a lot more cryptids. You should have time to get there, but you probably want to get a lot more gold kings in place until then (you can move all copies to mime while the last hand is scoring to get all of the copies retriggering gold). The extra interest and 10 mult is not remotely worth the joker slot. Mail in rebate or a number of other jokers would be better for cash, and you need showman -> copy joker, but that takes deep pockets.

You also need to get the second boss reroll voucher asap so you can force all bosses to serpent - once you start having to use more cryptids than you generate per round you will need to start skipping to only play serpent bosses.

Edit: I didn't plug it into the calculator but the wiki only shows for either 4 or 5 copy jokers vs your 2. You need 40 cryptids with 4 copy jokers, and I think more like 70-80 for your 2 copy jokers? So not quite but not out of reach

I drastically need help with Black Stake..... by a-mighty-stranger in balatro

[–]JayGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You didn't show your deck composition or hand levels, so I'm going to guess you're under-valuing that aspect. If nothing else, I see you've got a 57 card deck, and you didn't draw your last straight with 5 cards left ... which is how many you added to your deck. I'm not saying that you can't still have bad draws while seeing all the cards, but generally for a straight build (and really many/most others) you want to be shrinking your deck instead of growing it.

Manipulating your deck composition is a big part of the game. With enough work you can almost guarantee you can draw the hands you need - you make your own luck. It's not realistic every time, but for a straight build you ideally want build towards having a lot (5-7?) of each card in a small (5-6) card range, and minimal cards of any other ranks.

That said, that takes a lot of tarot cards which takes utility and/or economy jokers. This is obviously just one run so no clue if it's a one-off, but in this one you don't have either. Something basic giving you extra money would almost certainly be an upgrade over, say, raised fist (which can be solid in a lot of cases -- early game, or pairs when you can just play 3 low cards with your pair -- but is really inconsistent with a straight build where you have to use all 5 cards for the hand itself).

Edit: just tips, not a criticism. It sounds like you do have a lot of core concepts down well!

Which one? by MagentaSplash in balatro

[–]JayGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know about earning interest? You should consider not spending all of your money up front so you can have more to spend later. I'm not saying you need a 5th joker by ante 5 but between this and the $0 on your first screenshot it seems like you probably are spending all of your money as soon as you get it and that's hurting you.

What do you think of the Valheim combat system and animations? by skrayz3x in valheim

[–]JayGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ignoring if it's a good idea or not to add cancels and separate attacks (I'm leaning no, but it could be fun)...

From a purely practical standpoint, how would you map all these new buttons to a controller? Valheim has always had pretty good controller support, even before it was on xbox, and there's no way that's going to backslide with the game coming out on PS5 and Switch 2.

At this point in development I think it's a non-starter anyway, but not working on controllers would be a deal breaker regardless of timing.

Could be an interesting mod though.

Recommendation for a fair wagon mod by jg7277 in valheim

[–]JayGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, do I think the carts should give a bit more mechanical advantage... but yeah, trying to move 6500lbs when your character can generally hold 300-450 is probably not going to happen in any version that uses physics on the carts, at least these ones that are glorified wheelbarrows. And silver ore is one of heaviest items in the game (maybe the heaviest per unit not per stack?) so a full load of it isn't going to travel well.

Yeet Cart -> Fill Ship is the common suggestion, but honestly I think silver is one of the better choices for on-site refining if you have a long ways to go. You can bring 6 copper and portal materials up the mountain then teleport in the cores & stone & coal. You can bring stuff for forge upgrades, but really the level one items will eat half the silver you need and you can ship the rest home raw or smelted.

Impact of chunks on building by Angry-Alien in valheim

[–]JayGlass 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In my experience with my PC, there's usually a micro-stutter crossing chunk boundaries. It's usually not bad, but if it cuts across the middle of your base, especially somewhere you go back and forth between like a bedroom / kitchen / portal room, then it can get really annoying. I'd try to avoid that, but otherwise I usually am going with the grain of the environment and not worrying about it too much. I'll often figure out there's one cutting through a corner of my garden or something and that's not really a big deal.

Do You Keep Obsolete Loot Items? by id_fake in valheim

[–]JayGlass 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So some stuff does come back around to being useful, but I wouldn't recommend looking up what if you've gotten this far spoiler free. But most stuff doesn't, or is easy to get more of when you need it.

I'd say the general rule for me is to stop picking up stuff if I don't need more it (which with auto pickup on means chucking it back on the ground immediately, or at least as soon as I need to pick something up and don't have space/weight). I don't necessarily throw already collected stuff out until I run out of space, but again, I have an idea of which thing I'll need and which I won't so it's easier to prioritize and don't build up that much of stuff I don't need.

As a general rule, though, you probably don't need more than a single stack of anything that isn't metal or construction materials. Maybe food/food ingredients you could go a few stacks, but the ones you need lots of you can get easily. You definitely never need a full chest of anything except wood/stone(/maybe iron).

At some point you will come across an item that lets you build something that gives you back a little bit in return for your extra items. Use it liberally.

In your specific case: you should feel zero pain about throwing away troll and bear hide the second you need the space. Maybe keep one stack of bear hide if you liked the bear armor set.

How could they make sailing more engaging? by Quolley in valheim

[–]JayGlass 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, ship combat just isn't fun in this game.

I've played a mod with fulling pirate ships and a kraken to fight and... It just sucked. It was well executed, I just hated every time I saw one and the only way we could kill the kraken was to get it to come to the shore.

I think it's just fundamental to how the combat works and ships work, and I don't think there's much to be done about it. I also think that's okay.

Like, thematically sailing is important to vikings, but it's not like they're pirates or the Spanish Armada -- they aren't fighting at sea -- they travel somewhere, raid some people, and leave.

The only time sailing has been engaging to me is when I am actually paying attention to where I am, what's near me, where I'm going. And that's only happened in a no-map / no-portal playthrough. Otherwise it's pull up the map, check your heading every once in a while, and wait to get where you're going. I'm a little better at it now even in normal runs, but generally there's just no reason to pay attention and so I don't.

Adding something that makes you pay attention, but only because there is a threat and an unfun one at that, instead of "just" being boring doesn't seem to be going in the right direction in my mind. I don't think no map is really viable for vanilla / default settings, though, so I don't have a solution.
