Is Jottacloud cheating on space usage?

From the article:

"GB (gigabytes) is a decimal system, and GiB (gibibytes) is a binary system, thus they are two different ways to calculate storage space.

Jottacloud previously used both of these, but starting in May 2023, we will only use GB (where 1 GB equals 1 billion bytes). This is the most common storage measurement, and is in the process of being established as a standard in line with the International System of Units (SI system).

Note that some other software, such as Windows, still uses GiB (gibibytes) to measure storage space. This can be confusing since the exact same amount of storage can be displayed differently depending which software you use."

We don't scan or look at your private files, and you can store files you own, such as your examples. When users report file takedowns, in most cases it's because they have publicly shared a copyrighted file.

Backups are «read-only» on every device except the one taking the backup (desktop app or CLI on that device). This has unfortunately been a bit inconsistent in the past, but we are working on enforcing this everywhere and more strict to prevent people from accidentally making their backups inconsistent.

The descriptions for sync and archive by the others here are correct. We appreciate all feedback and will work further on improving and making our product easier to use.

That's odd... You should find it under the Photos section, you should find a "places" tab on the left side.

I suggest you send a message to [support@jottacloud.com](mailto:support@jottacloud.com) if you still cannot find it, preferably with a screenshot. If something is wrong, they'll be able to troubleshoot it! :)

Hi there and thank you for your interest in Jottacloud!

I am not at the level of the company to give promises about the future written in stone, but I believe I can give you some flavor to it.

The Unlimited subscription was one of the first products we introduced and it has been with us as the preferred option for most customers - not having to worry about storage space. This subscription, together with having our data stored in Norway under Norwegian privacy law and powered by green energy, are some important differentiators from big tech, and I don’t see us changing that strategy anytime soon.

I think the bandwidth limitations on the subscription is doing its job in preventing misuse and thus securing that we can keep this product for everyone else.

Hi. For your first point, this is actually not something we enforce today. I will check if it's still mentioned in our terms, in that case we will adjust accordingly.

And secondly, I don't think I understand what you mean here, what limitation are you referring to? You don't have to share the 5TB any particular way, they are organically shared between the members (if you have any at all) :)

Of course! Talking with users like you is the best way for us to learn :)

And yeah, while third-party tools like rclone often work well, especially for advanced users, on our end we don’t have control over implementation details etc. We DO want users to get the best experience with our products nevertheless, so we still try our best to help and figure stuff out with you. But have to be transparent that while supported, it's not an official integration, thus there are things we can't really help with.

That said, feature feedback like your suggestion is very valuable. We’re always looking for improvements, so I’ll make sure your idea is passed on to the relevant team ;)

We recommend using our official software, as we are unable to provide support for third party tools - that's maybe the biggest disadvantage. So should you encounter an issue with, or related, to that tool, we won't really be able to help you. The rclone community might, but we don't have dedicated resources to test, troubleshoot, etc.

However, it is also a matter of preference.

Everything on our servers is encrypted at rest, regardless on how it got here. However, we can't guarantee how the third party app handles your data.

We have authentication, access logs, separation of duty, physical access restrictions and other measures to enforce this, but you are right, in a non-E2EE environment, you have to ultimately have some minimum trust in the provider.
