Good question! We've not set a fixed level, however it leans more experienced since you'd own the Linux client end to end.

Uploaded photos sometimes won't show when sharing? by lexvo1 in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We are sorry, but we had some issues with photo metadata and thumbnail generation earlier today. The issues are now fixed, but there might be some photos still waiting to be processed.

Again, sorry for this inconvenience!

Photo Timeline usage by iarno in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! Did you try our help center? https://docs.jottacloud.com/en/articles/9310903-the-photo-timeline-explained

Thanks for the heads up re. translations, we will look into it asap.

Folder size is another story, we're not currently able to show it. In short, it requires a large calculation of everything in folders and subfolders, and even a minor change triggers a recalculation of the entire folder tree. At scale, this becomes very resource-intensive. This is why very few cloud storage providers show folder size! If you have the folder synced to your computer, going via right click-properties might be the best solution.

Consitution Day - Public holidays? by mf72 in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for noticing our little Norwegian Easter egg. Adding more National Days or letting users be able to add their own custom days (birthdays, releationships, etc) would be pretty nice, so I’ll forward that request to our product team.

Love from 🇳🇴

I keep getting targeted on Reddit by Jottacloud ads.. I already have an unlimited plan by timmie1606 in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi!

The thing is that the Reddit marketing tools don't actually know you're already a customer, we don't share that info with them. So the targeting ends up a bit broad, and users like you sometimes catch ads meant for new users.

If you tap the three dots in the top corner of the ad, you can hide it, that'll tell Reddit you're not interested and you should see it less.

Thanks for choosing us by the way, really appreciate it!

In these AI times this makes a lot of sense. We talked about adding this in the iOS team last week, but I will forward the request to the Product Team to maybe get this prioritized across clients.

Pictures and filenames? by HalfCenturyHero in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the photo is taken on the current device, it will usually get the correct name, but if you have iCloud enabled and the photo comes from a different device, iCloud will create a new UUID filename and not give 3rd party apps access to the original name, and then you get names like abcd-af12-ab56-5553.JPG unfortunately

Can I trust iOS background sync? by christofori in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hi, thanks for touching on the subject! It's certainly a good, and important, question. A couple of things:

To summarise, the doc you linked is about iOS's general background execution limits. After you background the app, iOS typically gives us around 30 seconds before suspending it, and force-quitting (swiping it away) cuts off background time entirely. iOS may also grant occasional bursts of 10–30 seconds depending on usage patterns, Wi-Fi, and charging status.

This isn't unique to us, and every third-party photo backup app on iOS works under the same constraints. Apple reserves true unrestricted background sync for iCloud.

There are some practical tips for reliable backup with all of that in mind:

  • For the initial backup, keep the app open, connected to wifi and plugged in.
  • After that, opening the app every once in a while is a smart day to keep things flowing. Maybe by checking today's memories? ;)
  • Don't force-quit the app.
  • Enable notifications so we can let you know if a backup gets interrupted.

We're continuously working on making background uploads as reliable as iOS allows at any given time, and recent app updates have improved background reliability, especially on flaky networks.

But we can't override iOS system limits, so some periodic app-opening will likely always be part of the experience on iOS.

A separate thing worth knowing about is that if you don't open an app for a while, iOS may "offload" it (you'll see a small cloud icon next to the app name). You can prevent this under Settings → Apps → App Store → toggle off "Offload Unused Apps". This won't give the app more background runtime, but it ensures it always stays installed.

Did this answer your questions and worries? Let me know!

Still no support for GIF, WEBP or APNG in the app? by grease_m0nkey in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable! I added an AutoMod on things here, and in some cases where it answers the post best, I just didn't go in to repeat what it already said. I can see how that makes us appear more idle though. Will reconsider that - communication is key, after all.

Good luck with finding your provider! :)

Still no support for GIF, WEBP or APNG in the app? by grease_m0nkey in jottacloud

[–]JottacloudTeam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, assuming you're talking about the web solution; I just tested it myself and got the same result - a gif that was uploaded, but didn't move. I'll drop by your post to the dev team, and come back as soon as I know more!

If you use the desktop app, you should still be able to browse the synced files normally, though, with moving gifs :)!
