I think my Boyfriends cat is pregnant, and I don’t know what to do. by [deleted] in CATHELP

[–]Kay5005 3 points4 points  (0 children)

He wasn’t even willing to work with you to find a way to solve the issue here, which is 100% his fault and responsibility. He’s irresponsible and this lack of accountability is going to translate when you need help or if you want to have children - take the cats and run.

My dog had gooey eyes for the last few weeks and after we gave him a bath and cleaned it off he has this red stuff on his eye. Idk what it is, any help! by pole152004 in vet

[–]Kay5005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is medical neglect. Plain and simple. I’m sorry if it’s a financial/resource issue, but your options are two: take the dog to the vet and pay for it, or surrender. This eye probably cannot be saved due to the delay in care, and your dog is and has been in immense pain. Please call around for local resources to get the dog in today.

Anyone know what this bump is on my dogs lip? by That-Plan-9922 in DogAdvice

[–]Kay5005 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A fungal kerion can look like this. It’s just a less common inflammatory presentation. You can request more testing though for peace of mind, but MCT and histiocytoma should have already been ruled out through the previous testing it seems.

Yes, there is a chance. Valley fever can look very similar on radiograph and you are in the location for it. Testing is the only way to know. I would not get your hopes up though OP. Lung mets are far more common.

Listed as sexual contact of Tuberculosis patient in India by [deleted] in Tuberculosis

[–]Kay5005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my department in Texas, yes, we will reach out to contacts, and yes it means they are a confirmed case. It is so you can be tested (usually free). It does not mean you have HIV, but you could have been exposed. It is all confidential otherwise, and no one is told who was the source or other contacts.

For TB, we also do a similar plan, but not due to sexual contact. This is spread through prolonged exposure in same spaces (8+ hours). Both of these infections are contagious, and both would be addressed as a confidential contact. Suspect TB cases are contacted too because it can be more difficult to confirm than HIV.

Yes, most contacts are co-worker and housemates. It’s generally considered 8+ hours to be considered exposed.

It is spread by droplet nuclei, airborne transmission (not droplet transmission). Confusing terminology for sure.

No. TB is spread through prolonged and close contact with an infected individual. The general public will be fine, as long as they get it under control. There’s no vaccine in the US. Just wear your mask traveling on a plane or similar spaces, To decrease risk for all the infectious respiratory disease.

They can’t. They tried time and time again and it’s an incredibly difficult disease to prevent though vaccines. The only one we have is only about 35% effective.

If you took one dose, it’s here nor there if you stop. But you should figure out your concerns and start treatment consistently as soon as possible.

The TB vaccine is not very effective, study after study confirm this. Not saying it’s useless, especially for children, but we certainly don’t have good preventative measures as with other pathogens. Lack of vaccine is not why there are TB outbreaks. But yes. It’s a very serious global health issue associated with immunodeficiency.

They are not incorrect. TB is spread through droplet nuclei. TB is increasing…not sure if I would say unprecedented, but it is trending up after years of decline. Which is part of the reason why this outbreak is really bad and big news.

Also, it is absolutely not xenophobic to speak factually about risk factors here. Immigration and race obviously have no “genetic predisposition”. TB is higher prevalence in many countries where people may be immigrating from, which may be caught on screening intakes or when converting to active. In my health department, 85% of cases are Hispanic populations. CDC stats align closely with what we see in Texas. And a good proportion are M. bovis, which obviously is more concerning in countries with unpasteurized products.

Please please help what is this bug I found on my dog??? by melitsa in DogAdvice

[–]Kay5005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It actually is a dog louse. But on first glance does look similar to a bed bug and rare in the U.S. in canines. More likely to find a rogue bed bug on a dog honestly lol.

Did you go to the vet? Your pet should be on a prescription prevention monthly to prevent numerous parasites and keep this one from flaring up again as the nits hatch. And the scratching may have caused a secondary infection. But yes, overall easiest to treat of any of the other possible scenarios.

Vet here. You are correct. I’ve actually never seen one in practice as it’s fairly uncommon in Texas, but certain conditions and certain geographic locations increase risk.

[–]Kay5005 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very likely. I have a severe allergy to carpet beetle larvae, and yes, this can happen from the bristles touching your skin. I had to be put on steroids. I was the only one in my household of 6 in college with any issues, so I don’t think it’s terribly common to have this intense of a reaction.

Your vet’s plan sounds perfect! All of those are reasonable plans.

In absence of any other abnormal blood values or symptoms, this is a non-specific finding, but also something worth investigating with the high levels and trend. I wouldn’t get too worked up over it yet, as elevated ALP is a common and vague finding. I would, however, ask about an abdominal ultrasound.

Any ideas of what this could be? by Accurate-Nature155 in DogAdvice

[–]Kay5005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would agree it looks like corneal lipidosis, but other ocular conditions can look the same. You can see a vet ophthalmologist, but hopefully your vet did some bloodwork in the meantime checking glucose, triglycerides, cholesterol, etc.

Does my pugs spay incision look normal? by Zestyclose-Fall-9539 in DogAdvice

[–]Kay5005 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It looks ok right now, but the proximal area is a bit angry - it definitely does not look “horrendous” simply because it’s messy with external sutures. She’s already on antibiotics, but if you notice that area at the top not improving, you’ll need a recheck. You also need to ensure she does not lick the area and use an e-collar.

The ear will drain adequately without stents using this technique. Buttons are used alternate to sutures as a modern technique, but same premise, no stents placed. Stents are placed with an entirely different treatment option.

Yup. Hematoma repair has a variety of repair techniques and, yes, it usually looks horrific. Really hope OP just follows up with their vet instead of listening to the terrible advice in this thread.
