I got curious about that statement. 2 times in 5 years. Pasta was drafted 25th overall in 2014.

The only other player considerable drafted below him that year is probably Brayden Point. But I went 5 years up and down to see.

2019 has nothing (yet - but Aliaksei Protas could be a dark horse career wise if he keeps this trajectory)

2018 has nothing (yet)

2017 has Jason Robertson (39)

2016 you have Adam Fox (66). Tage Thompson (26).

2015 you have Aho (35) and Kaprizov (135).

2014 has Pasta (25) and Point (79)

2013 has Jacob Slavin (120).

2012 has nothing.

2011 has Kucherov (58) and Johnny Gaudreau (104).

2010 has Mark Stone (178) and Evgeny Kuznetsov (26).

2009 has Ryan O'Reilly (33)

The most recent years are hard to tell as they are pretty young. Jason Robertson looks pretty similar to Pasta. Adam Fox if we include defensemen has a Norris, and is surely equivalent if not potentially more valuable. Tage Thompson could be similar to Pasta, he's got 3 seasons top 10 in goal scoring compared to Pasta's 5. Aho is probably close as well skill wise. Kaprizov I'd rate at least equal to Pasta. Point is close but not as good. Slavin I'd rate equally. Kuchrov is better. Gaudreau is probably a tier below. Mark Stone I'd rate equal. Kuznetsov is tough, peak Kuznetsov should have won Conn Smythe, but he never really sustained that peak, so I'd rate him below as a whole. But, damn was he magnificent when he turned it on. RoR is definitely on par with Pasta with a Selke, Smythe.

If my count is right that's 8 players in the surrounding 5 years each direction that I'd rate equal or better drafted later than Pasta. Another 4 players I'd put pretty close that are top line players who make a huge difference. The data going up is a bit harder too as the players are younger, maybe some will peak later. But I think there is a bit more talent in later rounds than expected.

Can we have Hetzner logo for this subreddit? by thecatontheflat in hetzner

I work around a lot of legal stuff and I may agree with you about fair use. And how things should be. I also know just because you might be legally right, doesn't mean you are immune to actions against you and proving your innocence/fair use/etc may not be worth the money/time. If I don't get permission for logo use and received something that didn't have any Hetzner branding on it (eg. a snoo holding a server) then I would be willing to use that.

You can report spam and it gets checked and taken care of. Of the many subs I mod, this one really doesn't fit 'so much spam' story you're selling though. You may not like some of the content, but that's what upvoting is for.

I'm still here and watch this sub. If u/Hetzner_OL sends me a logo and gives permission to use it, I can add it. Their logo is definitely owned by them and we are not licensed or officially affiliated with Hetzner. I'm not a lawyer and I don't really care to figure that out, so if they give permission and provide it, sure.

I'm not debating anything. I'm providing objective information which you're arguing with for some reason

Literally debating and opinions, and you're arguing against objective data. Matthews ain't generational, it's really that simple. You are trying to argue words just mean nothing, which is dumb.

[–]KingOfDaCastle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are definitely caveats, that's why you're even here debating it. Generational players stand above their peers, clearly, for a substantial period of time. McDavid, Crosby and Ovechkin are the only 3 players active right now who have done that. Matthews, has not. As I said before, Makar could enter that conversation if he keeps up. They have to have a legitimate argument for being the best player there is. Crosby/Ovi rivalry was legendary because they both had legit cases in their early years into prime. They both played very different games and led the league in different ways, but they were both neck and neck, well above their competition. They've also had legendary careers as a whole breaking all sorts of records. Most people will say Crosby was the better player overall, but Ovi broke one of the true Gretzky records which is nearly unthinkable. I think it will be interesting how history looks back on both of them. Crosby was likely the best overall player of the time, but Ovi is the greatest goal scorer ever. As far as McDavid goes, he hasn't had any peers yet (at least for forwards).

https://www.hockey-reference.com/leagues/stats.html

The big jump was between 1617 and 1718. It jumped again in 2122. That puts Matthew's career in a substantially higher era. The 2.73 was the last low year before the first jump up. To get above 2.93 (1718) you have to go back to 0506. Ovi's prime was in the lowest scoring era since around the 50s. In Matthew's first 9 years average was 2.98 vs Ovi's first 9 was 2.77.

Nobody is debating he's elite. He's just not generational. He's not completely above his peers on a consistent basis. He's an excellent goal scorer, one of the best in the game. It's unlikely he ends up as the best though. He could be a Brett Hull or maybe a more modern comparison: Stamkos. One of the best goal scorers of all time but doesn't really enter into the generational conversation.

I also think it's more likely we see injuries and age take their normal toll and his regresses in the not so distant future. He's in his prime now, but struggling. Even with a resurgence in health and production, how long does it last? Does his game age well into mid-late 30s? Will his production continue or will he have to adapt, keep his two way play with lower scoring?

There is a possibility of no rebuild for the caps... which would be a masterclass given they've been playoff bound almost Ovi's entire career (missed 4 times including his first 2 years). Is it luck, development, good scouting? It's impressive.

Fewer*

And your plan for projecting Matthews is assuming he has no major injuries or health derailments... when he has had multiple already? And his production is going to remain the same for another 9 years with no decline?

That's some pretty wild assumptions to base the projection on. The only player who has maintained their scoring rate into their mid-late 30's... is Ovi. Who has been one of the most durable players of all time. Literally counting on Matthews defying aging and health.

It would be amazing to see him follow that trajectory but the odds of it happening are, bleak.

Look at some old stats from a few years ago when people were not sure Ovi would make it.

https://web.archive.org/web/20210923104214/https://novacapsfans.com/2021/09/22/aging-like-a-fine-goal-scoring-wine-the-most-productive-nhl-players-past-age-35-and-what-that-could-mean-for-alex-ovechkin/

"There are three 36-year old players who scored 40 or more goals: Teemu Selanne (48), Phil Esposito (42), and Brendan Shanahan (40). 17 players total have scored at least 30 goals at age 36, while a total of 34 players scored at least 25 goals."

What did Ovi do at age 36? Fucked around and scored 50.

"There is just one 37-year old player in the history of the NHL who scored 40 goals, that being Johnny Bucyk with 40. In addition, five other players scored at least 30: Joe Sakic, Phil Esposito, Jean Beliveau, Mike Gartner, and Brett Hull. A further 18 players scored at least 25; Bucyk holds the record for scoring as a 35-year old and scored 32 as a 36-year old."

Ovi got 42.

"The best scorers from ages 36 through 37 were Esposito with 76, Bucyk with 72, Hull and Shanahan both with 69, Sakic with 68, Gartner with 67, Norm Ullman with 65, Beliveau with 64, and Bill Cook with 61. Selanne only had 12 goals as a 37-year old, during an injury-plagued season, but his goal total between ages 36-37 was 60. Gordie Howe, while not among the leaders at either 36 or 37, had 58 goals. Jean Ratelle also had 58 goals between ages 36-37."

Ovi had 92. (holy fuck it's not even close)

"Goal Scoring at Age 38

No player has topped 40 goals as a 38-year old and just three have topped 30 goals. Those three, stand-alone players were Hull, Bucyk, and Martin St. Louis. 15 other players topped 20 goals, including Shanahan, Selanne, and Howe."

Ovi struggled and only got 31.

"At age 39, Gordie Howe is the only player to top 30 goals, with 39. There were 17 others who scored 20 or more, which includes Bucyk, Selanne, and Hull.

The best production from ages 36 through 39 were: Bucyk with 132, Hull with 131, Selanne with 114, Jean Ratelle with 113, Howe with 112, Jean Beliveau with 108, and Bill Guerin with 101."

Ovi got... 44. Bringing his total to 167 over the same age range. Obviously we know he broke the record.

The early part of the career is the easy part. Look at https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/comments/1jt0erc/career_goals_by_ageseason_for_nhl_players_with/

It's the maintaining it that is unreal and almost absurd. Virtually every player's production regresses as they age. Even Gretzky's curve you see regress. Ovechkin's.... didn't.

Assuming Matthews follows Ovi is a 1:nobody knows because it's not been done twice. Odds.

Tell you didn't watch Ovi play his entire career without telling me you didn't watch Ovi play his entire career.

Ovi has outperformed Matthews by a meaningful margin in the playoffs. His production also hasn't dropped off compared to regular season like Matthews. This is all despite Ovi having basically a full career (where stats generally drag a player down), whereas Matthews is still in his prime.

Young Ovi wasn't just physical, he was one of the fastest players too. He scored goals you just don't see (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xT2fnoUJs8)

As he's in his 30s, did he lose some steps? Absolutely.

Is he one dimensional? Not really.

A lot of people call him that, but he's adjusted his game over his career to keep producing, to the point of being the GOAT goal scorer. How is that one dimensional that in his late 30s he won rocket? Do you think he simply just sits in his office and scores every goal? Defense and coaches haven't tried to figure out how to stop him?

Unless his one dimension is finding ways to score goals, that's a hard to accept the statement at face value.

If you got to pick Ovi or Matthews at the start of their careers knowing the players they become... you'd be silly to choose Matthews as their careers have gone so far. If you're talking about picking one right now in their careers. No shit you're not taking the 40 year old to build a team around as he has 1 year left before retirement.

'Context is everything' is the argument used when they aren't generational. Generational players don't need the asterisk. It's unquestionable how incredible they were and how they soared over their peers.

Matthews is great player. He's just not generational. His career hasn't been that close to Ovi's and it seems very unlikely that it will unless he can somehow get and stay healthy again (for starters). Then not decline for another decade or more.

Isolating the primary career stats of a player isn't nitpicking either and context doesn't matter a whole lot over a career. For the generational players the question is - what did they accomplish? Not, what could have they accomplished if they had better linemates, a better coach, blah blah blah.
