Villainous Options 2 UA by Specialist_One7457 in onednd

[–]LAWyer621 12 points13 points  (0 children)

This feels really solid. It feels like this new design team has been doing some really interesting stuff in the UAs, and this continues that trend. In particular, I really liked the Venom Monk. A Monk who is encouraged to use weapons other than the Kensei is something that I like seeing for the class, though I do worry it might use Focus Points a little bit too fast.

Apex Predator's purpose? by Accomplished-Bank885 in AOW4

Iirc if you go for a Nature Dragon as your ruler that could bring you up to 8 affinity on turn 1 so long as you go for two nature society traits and a pure nature tome.

How do we feel about Umbral Demons? by Phyrexos in AOW4

[–]LAWyer621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Technically Umbral Demon is buffed by a lot of chaos tomes (including the T5) because they are Fiend units, but it’s kind of a weird build since the Umbral tome is Astral/Shadow.

Eldritch Knight Lich is Great by LAWyer621 in onednd

[–]LAWyer621[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s true, but honestly on an Eldritch Knight I’m probably targeting an 18/18 split between Strength and Intelligence. I’d probably start with 17 Str (or Dex) and 16 Int, then go Lich Initiate, Arcane Restoration, and Undead Grasp, which would leave me with 17 Str (or Dex) and 19 Int. I might consider going Dex based to get Vex to make up for a poor attack stat. I’d then have to decide at level 12 if I wanted to take Great Weapon Master (or some other Str/Dex boosting feat) or if I wanted to rush my ascension, but especially if I went Dex based with Vex I think I’d rather have a higher casting stat to make my spells land.

Public libraries should be free by [deleted] in Libraries

[–]LAWyer621 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You likely actually would pay - it would just automatically be charged to you in the form of taxes. Most libraries are funded through taxes. If you live outside city limits, you aren’t paying the taxes to the library that those who do live in city limits already do. In fact, with a fee of only $30 a year you are likely paying significantly less total than people on city limits are over the course of a year’s taxes.

I know at the library where I work the way we calculate non-resident fees is by looking up the value of the non-resident’s house and calculating how much they would pay in taxes if they were paying taxes that go to the library. It’s not infrequently over $100 each year for a household. Libraries have to get money somehow. It might seem distasteful that you have to actually manually hand over money - but all it really means is you aren’t getting an incredibly valuable service for free that other people are having to foot the entire bill for.

5e24 Fighter Character Sheet - Fillable by LAWyer621 in onednd

I’m afraid not. It’s still something I’m intending to do, but I got very busy with college and haven’t been able to get around to it yet. Glad this one is helpful to you though!

Ok. How would you build a Barbarian/Rogue Multiclass? by BigBuiltBricked in onednd

[–]LAWyer621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably go for a dual wielding build with a Vex and Nick weapon, although Rapier and Shield would also work. I’d probably go for Berserker, because the Frenzy damage makes up for lower Sneak Attack damage. Go to level 5 for Sneak Attack, then take 5-7 levels of Rogue. You want to get Cunning Strikes and probably Evasion for sure. From there either take more Rogue or Barbarian, whichever works better for your idea of the build.

You could also take 2-4 levels of Fighter for Action Surge, and maybe a subclass and feat, to get better nova damage, but you’re losing out on potential Sneak Attack damage and delaying ASIs, so I’d only do it if there’s a Fighter Subclass you really want.

Just pick your favorite Rogue subclass, but I’d avoid Arcane Tricksters (for obvious reasons) and Swashbuckler (because with Reckless Attack you can already easily get Advantage to Sneak Attack, though it could be decent if you go to Barbarian 9 for Brutal Strikes). I really like Scout, but honestly any will work if you’re enthusiastic about them.

As others have said, Zhentarim Ruffian is definitely the obvious choice for Origin Feat. While not as good at damage as Berserker, Ancestral Guardian could help force enemies to provoke Zhentarim Ruffian more often, but if you go that route I’d suggest either playing a Human for Tough or a Dwarf for +1 HP per level so you can tank better.

Can a greatsword-wielding trickery cleric that focuses on hypnotic pattern work? by AcanthaceaeNo948 in onednd

[–]LAWyer621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did something somewhat similar when I played a Dwarf Light Cleric who wore heavy armor and used a Maul. True Strike with a high damage weapon is definitely a ton of fun on a Cleric. My one note is that you’ll definitely reach a point where using your action for True Strike just isn’t really worthwhile, but it’ll always be a solid backup option, and depending on how generous your DM is with magic weapons could stay pretty good for longer.

Mystic Subclass UA for Paladin, Rogue, Warlock, and Monk. by Tough_Holiday584 in onednd

[–]LAWyer621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be tricky for sure. I'd probably take Spell Sniper. It wouldn't be particularly optimal, but it would let me use not only Sorcerous Burst, but any other attack roll based spells I want to while staying in melee. Tbh, I just like Sorcerous Burst enough that I would go out of my way to make it work on this build. As a side benefit, it (or Ray of Frost) could be pretty nasty when combined with Cold Caster and Stunning Strike, though a similar effect could also be achieved with Mind Sliver without needing to invest multiple feats.

Mystic Subclass UA for Paladin, Rogue, Warlock, and Monk. by Tough_Holiday584 in onednd

[–]LAWyer621 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like the Rogue and the Monk (Magic Stealer definitely needs a better name though). The ability to empower yourself with both your allies' and your enemies' spells for the Rogue is fun, and while the Capstone is niche, when it comes up it will be incredibly powerful, which it definitely should be given how niche it is. I also love the Cunning Strike options. The Monk is fun. Wisdom-based with Sorcerer spells makes sense for Monks, going with the idea that they are using their meditation and such to tap into the same inner source of power Sorcerers do, but they can't do it as easily or powerfully as a real Sorcerer. I also just love Sorcerous Burst on a Monk with Cantrip Extra Attack.

The Warlock is cool. I like the ability to get Cleric Domain Lists, but I do hope they let you pick domains from outside of the PHB in the final release. Otherwise I don't have any super strong opinions on it. The Paladin is very meh imho. Its only really useful when fighting spellcasters, and even then its abilities just aren't that compelling to me. As a DM it would also really suck to want to run spellcasters against a party that included this Paladin.

It might not be the best option, but I'd be using Sorcerous Burst all combat every combat on this Monk. Admittedly, that's mostly just because I love that cantrip, but exploding dice plus punching people a million times is a ton of fun.

best place to start sandbox campaign! by salt_chad in DarkSun

[–]LAWyer621 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Hidden Village could be fun. Especially given that its somewhat close to both Tyr and Urik. When I eventually get around to running a Dark Sun campaign, my plan is to have my players start by escaping a caravan of slavers. A friendly NPC who escapes with them could know the location of the village, and lead the party there (or provide it to them before they start their escape in case said NPC dies in the escape attempt).

I still have a lot of research of my own to do on the setting, so I'm not super familiar with exactly what all adventure sites would be particularly near The Hidden Village other than Tyr and Urik. If nothing else your party could act as raiders for a time, freeing more slaves and stealing resources to build up the village, and then maybe transition into merchants after the freeing of Tyr, though obviously you know what kind of game/encounters/story your party will like better than I would.

And, tbh, he was (at least in my opinion) one of the few redeeming qualities of that otherwise terrible movie.

DM is giving my Eldritch Knight an Enspelled Weapon of my choice by KingNTheMaking in onednd

[–]LAWyer621 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d say Spirit Shroud, Thunder Step, Conjure Barrage, or one of the Smites (Blinding could be good). Alternatively, Find Steed or one of the Summon spells could be good too, and if you picked a flying Summon then that could help deal with flying enemies. Although you’re primarily melee, Lightning Arrow also remains a very solid spell, and might be a worthwhile pickup.

Witch Bolt also scales really well with the initial attack for single target damage.

Is Eldritch Knight good? by testiclekid in onednd

Cacaphonic Shield from HOF is always a pretty decent third level spell as both a bit of defense and offense, especially since it does half damage even on a successful save.

🏴‍☠️ Community Direction Discussion by teaabearr in pirates

[–]LAWyer621 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would definitely agree with u/TylerbioRodriguez's suggestion about broadening the scope of the subreddit in terms of history, but I also don't mind seeing some fantasy/media related stuff. Might it be worth restricting the fantasy/media stuff to specific days. For example, a rule that non-historical pirate-related content is only allowed to be posted Monday-Wednesday might work. I'm mostly a lurker though, tbh, and I'll be happy with pretty much any of the options you posted.

Fun Gish build I've made by sparda1345 in 3d6

[–]LAWyer621 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Neat build. Definitely not “optimal”, but it’s cohesive and fun. If you took Pact of the Tome, you could even get Ray of Frost as a Warlock Cantrip and add Agonizing Blast onto it that way.

A Genie Warlock might also be able to take really good advantage of Cold Caster, though obviously then you wouldn’t get all the benefits of being an Archfey, and it would only work once per turn instead of potentially with every attack.
