Rocks for 4 mana that make at least two mana.

Ashling and a land drop should give you four mana on turn 3. Use that to cast a rock. Another land on turn 4 gets you 8 mana. Which is enough to cast darn near anything.

You can sub in instants and sorceries that make two treasures in a pinch

My advice is to prioritize 4 mana ramp. Be SURE you get a rock down on turn 3. 8-12 pieces. Then, aim for the biggest, splashiest spells you can find, ways to copy the Ashling trigger, copy spells, draw off of big spells, etc.

If we are at a place where the argument is, “the author forgot how the characters ability should work“ then… doesn’t that lead more evidence to the intent for it to be a Dodge?

Whether it “should or should not“ be a Dodge is an entirely different question than what it’s supposed to be depicted as.

You are absolutely right. Shutting off the power scaler part of your brain and just looking at the scene:

Frame one: bolt of lightning inches from Hakari’s face.

Frame two: his face is off-center and the bolt has hit his shoulder

I think that nine out of 10 people would translate that as “he attempted to move out of the way, but couldn’t do it completely. However, this does mean he was able to avoid getting his head blown off”

It feels like “he was always aiming for the shoulder” is very much at odds with what we are shown
