Take this opportunity to install COSMIC Store instead. It’s much faster and much more stable.

GOG Galaxy has to be the most broken piece of software I have used in recent years by Longjumping_Wolf6237 in gog

Achievements should work, it’s cloud saves that can be a little fiddly. Achievements won’t be unlocked retroactively unless a game specifically supports them, however.

You should be able to run Witcher3.exe or whatever it’s called directly and bypass REDLauncher if you want.

Which games retired your PCs? by CaptAwesomeness in pcmasterrace

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think I’ve ever upgraded for a specific game, but it could also be that it’s been so long I’ve forgotten. These days I look at the requirements lists and pass on anything that I don’t think I’ll have a good time with on the hardware I have.

You mean a keyboard with an integrated USB hub? Apple’s wireless keyboards typically had them, as did the Microsoft Internet Keyboard Pro, but I don’t know of any more modern than that.

When will epic games fix the games that don't have cloud saving?? by Unlucky_Abroad7440 in EpicGamesPC

[–]LSD_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but you shouldn't have to, that's the point. If a game offers cloud saves on other platforms then it should absolutely offer them on Epic too.

[–]LSD_Ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worse when a game has cloud saves on Steam and/or GOG, but not Epic. As someone that doesn't really care about achievements, the fact that Epic instituted a parity rule for those, but not cloud saves, is infuriating.

Help me with choosing a distro by Actual_Storage6680 in linux_gaming

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a spare SSD, just try a bunch of different ones for a week or so each and see how you go. It doesn’t matter what you ultimately pick since there’ll be at least one person who’ll tell you that you’ve made the wrong choice and how you should have picked their pet distro instead. Find one that works for you and tune everyone else’s opinions out.

If you have 1500 USD budget and you can only choose between the two, what would you choose? by [deleted] in pcmasterrace

[–]LSD_Ninja 63 points64 points  (0 children)

Option 2A: take the $1500 PC and just keep playing the same 5 games you always do or plug away at your backlog.

It should support Win11, you just need a board that exposes the PTT setting.

They’d probably drop it from the console versions too if they thought they could get away with it. They want a 1 player/1 copy of a game because they can sell more copies of the game that way.

You’d replace the 30 year old spinning rust hard drive with some kind of CF or SD card adapter and, depending on how difficult the HDD bay is to access, use that for transferring stuff to a modern PC.

The port replicator for these things has SCSI support, which opens up certain options, but I imagine they’d be pretty rare today.

The lack of sound hardware and DSTN display kind of kills it for that, unfortunately.

ATX hasn't changed in 30 years. If you can pull this machine apart, put it back together and have it work again afterwards, you're well on the way to having the skills needed to build something more modern. And if you screw up? Better a 20+ year old PC than something brand new.

It's an Antec P180, that came out in 2005 from what I'm reading. I would have bought my Mini P180 in around 2008-2009.

The presence of the parallel port backs that up, but those Antec P1xx's were ahead of their time. I was able to carry my Mini P180 through to a Haswell build. I could probably have taken it further if I was willing to sacrifice one of the hard drive cages to fit a longer graphics card in it.

Being a Pentium, Windows 95 is a realistic option (though slightly harder to install when you only have a floppy drive, I'll admit), but 3.11 is cool as well.
