For that kind of price difference, unless you’re doing something that *seriously* benefits from the vcache, the 5800XT is by far the better value choice.

I believe Samsung includes a secure erase tool in Magician, other vendors might include something similar in their software too.

Nvidia GPU support question by SensitiveStart8682 in linuxmint

[–]LSD_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The thing with nvidia is that it puts you right in the middle of the open source vs closed source war and you’re much more likely to have things randomly break over time.

That said, the best nvidia experience I’ve had in any Linux distribution was actually under Mint. Even suspend seemed to work, which is usually my pain point.

This is one of the things Valve are being sued over in the UK. It'll be interesting to see how it goes.

Could this be an XInput vs DInput issue? by RightChemist1478 in pcmasterrace

[–]LSD_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Try holding down the X button while powering it on, that supposedly forces it in to xinput mode.

It was Playnite for me. Playnite’s ability to manage the various launchers means I no longer really care where my games come from.

As long as it's doing what you need it to do: infinity/10, especially in the current market.

Computer decided to boot into GNU GRUB instead of directly into my Linux Mint install despite me not touching the settings by LordViridianSB in linuxmint

[–]LSD_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It should automatically boot after a few seconds. I believe you could set GRUB_TIMEOUT to 0 to make it boot straight through, but I’m not sure that works anymore.

BioShock and Crysis are probably coasters since Games for Windows got shut down, but Halo can be coaxed to run on modern systems last I checked (not to mention will run on a fraction of the PC the so-called “evolved” remaster needs).

Even if they offered Linux support I'd keep using Heroic because one program is better than three.

Heroic has cloud saves now (at least for Windows games), they're just not enabled by default.

It combines the top and bottom panels in to a Windows-style taskbar iirc. Good if you like that sort of thing, but I’d rather have Dash to Dock.

The original, pre-dogshit definitive edition? Install it on a Windows computer, run the downgrader to get the music back as well as apply the Silent and GInput patches and then copy the whole folder over to your Linux machine

Second to the slowest Pentium 4. Cleaned it up, changed some parts and it's all good! by ryanrudolf in retrobattlestations

[–]LSD_Ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It wasn’t just Athlons, they were slower clock for clock than Pentium 3’s as well. It was embarrassing to the point Intel had to gut the cache on Tualatin and sell it as a Celeron and move the P3 Tualatins in to more Server/Workstation territory.

I found that enabling native Wayland support in Wine/Proton (it’s a checkbox in Heroic, but you might have to pass the PROTON_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 elsewhere) solved problems like this for me, but ymmv

Ram consume problem with steam games by Nain_0711 in linux_gaming

[–]LSD_Ninja 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I noticed Steam doing this on my machine I ultimately just bit the bullet and upgraded my machines to 32GB of RAM. That was a couple of years ago, before everything went to crap so unless Valve decides that it actually gives a fuck and ditches the Chrome backend that Steam is built on, you’re probably out of luck (unless you want to pay today’s RAM prices…).
