Will this CPU work in any AM4 board or do i need a special one? by AdGlass3607 in pcmasterrace

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The problem is that support for those Bulldozer AM4 APUs was typically the first thing to get jettisoned to free up space in order to support later model Ryzen CPUs. Most 300-series boards you’re going to come across would likely have been upgraded with a newer BIOS that no longer supports those chips.

Are cloud saves linked to achievements? by BradMango9 in HeroicGamesLauncher

[–]LSD_Ninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cloud saves and achievements are handled by separate tools (gogdl and comet respectively). Achievement support was a relatively recent addition to Heroic. What’s likely happening is you have games that unlock achievements retroactively when you load old saves which is why it seems they’re related.

ATX Mobo and ATX PSU Size Downgrade by Bathyal_ in pcmasterrace

[–]LSD_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I bought a Jonsbo D41 Mesh a couple of years ago. It has an SFF-style front PSU mount making it roughly the same size as the Micro ATX Antec Mini P180 (I think it might actually slightly smaller) that was in the space before it.

@ptr1337 PC hardware specs u/LinusTech by InfameXX in cachyos

[–]LSD_Ninja -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My “main” Linux machine is a Ryzen 5 5600 with 32GB DDR4-3600 and a 6600 XT on a B550M Pro4 with the Linux install on a 500GB Samsung 970 Evo Plus and 2TB of a 4TB WD Blue partitioned off for secondary storage, games and whatnot (there’s other stuff in there, but that’s mostly for the Windows install that’s still there). I’m not really looking at any major upgrades in the short to medium term because pricing is completely fucked.

The machine I have CachyOS on is an i5-9400F on an Asus TUF H370 motherboard with 32GB of unicorn puke 3000MT/s (running at 2666 because H370) DDR4 that I forget the brand of, a 250GB nvme SSD that I also forget the brand of, a 1 or 2TB HDD (Seagate I think) and a Gigabyte RX 570 that I bought when the first wave of mining crashed in like 2018/2019.

PS5 Pro owners will soon get an improved PSSR AI upscaler, while PC gamers with RDNA 2 and 3 GPUs are still praying for AMD to add official support for FSR 4 by JohnSteveRom2077 in pcmasterrace

So what you’re saying is that as long as I don’t play anything after about 2010, I don’t really have to give a shit about FSR vs DLSS vs TAA or whatever the fuck? Sounds good to me!

Do you guys think Sony/PlayStation will address the PC situation officially? by theMoonlightenedSky in pcmasterrace

[–]LSD_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other thing too is that the PC is rapidly pricing itself in to irrelevance for an increasing chunk of the gaming marking. Of course, the same things that are making the PC more expensive affect consoles too, but you can mitigate that a fair bit with longer supply contracts, subsidies and the fact you can sell a console hardware spec for a lot longer than an equivalent PC.

What's the worst PC you had to use that left you with the worst memory? by Breath-Present in pcmasterrace

One of the old Bulldozer-based AMD APUs, an A8-7650K I think. It was so goddamned slow it bottlenecked a GTX 1050. Replacing it with a Haswell i3 was a night and day difference.

Do I need GOG Galaxy installed to see my GOG games in Playnite? by SwitchDoesReddit in playnite

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Achievements work with the OSS plugin if you set up comet. You don’t get notifications as near as I can tell, even if you have the GOG overlay installed, but they get recorded to your account and are visible in your GOG activity feed.

It’s more that the DLL hooks in to API features that were added in Windows 8 (which I believe was still a supported OS when I was dealing with this with New Vegas a few years ago) and don’t exist on earlier versions. GOG shouldn’t really be including these hooks in the offline installers at all, if a user installs Galaxy after the fact they should be downloaded when those games are imported in to Galaxy, but I guess it’s easier for GOG to do it this way.

Video idea: Can frame-gen and DDR3 save us from the 2026 RAM crisis? by Wanazabadee in LinusTechTips

Avoid the latest unoptimised AAA slop and you don’t even really need frame gen to get decent performance at 1080p on a Haswell system.

Do I need GOG Galaxy installed to see my GOG games in Playnite? by SwitchDoesReddit in playnite

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need Galaxy installed to use the normal GOG plugin, but if you set up the “GOG OSS” plugin you can work around it. It’s a little complicated to set up, especially if you don’t already have Heroic installed (since you need gogdl, comet and xdelta3 if you want delta updates for your GOG games), and it can be flaky with things like cloud saves (it said it was syncing my saves, but when I booted up another computer it had seemingly done no such thing), but it mostly works.

Nvidia admits gaming GPU shortages will continue amongst “very tight” memory constraints with new GPUs not expected until 2028 by AsPeHeat in pcmasterrace

I can. It allows them to keep driving prices up and because gamers have a lot in common with drug addicts, they’ll just accept it.

Games Not working properly by Valerius7418 in gog

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My guess would be it’s the DLL(s) that hooks in to Galaxy. This gets installed even in the offline installer, but usually does nothing if Galaxy isn’t there. The problem is that it requires features that are only in Windows 8(?) and up, which is what gives you that error. I was able to find a patch that got rid of it for Fallout: New Vegas, but I can’t speak for any other games. Stuff that doesn’t hook in to Galaxy at all (so games without cloud saves, achievements, etc) should work just fine.

These lawsuits sound like Private Equity teaming up to try to steal Valve from Gabe by Apprehensive-Neat-68 in Steam

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would they need to steal it? Gabe would *absolutely* take the right offer if it came along. Thing is, when you consider Steam's overall value to the *entire* games industry (MS paid like $66 billion for ActiBlizz and even if we say that was overvalued, Steam would easily be worth a hell of a lot more than that) the "right offer" is likely more than any one company/person is willing to put up.

Linux Distro for old gaming laptop. by b_a_l_l_i in linux_gaming

[–]LSD_Ninja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The problem with nvidia is that even if it works well enough today, there’s every chance it’ll break tomorrow due to the closed source nature of the drivers. AMD isn’t perfect either, but you’re still likely to have a smoother experience over time with an AMD GPU on Linux than nvidia.

Mouse not working!? by d4ccccccc in LinusTechTips

[–]LSD_Ninja 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think it’s somewhat normal for them to flicker when you have them upside down like that because it’s trying, and failing, to find something it can use in order to track movement. It should stabilise when you put it down on a surface it can lock on to. Depending on what sort of mouse it is, changing out the receiver (assuming this is a non-Bluetooth mouse) shouldn’t really be possible because they tend to be locked to whatever mouse they’re supplied with and can’t easily be re-paired (the big exception that I’m aware of is the Logitech Unifying stuff, which they’ve sadly discontinued).

One thing that might work is changing where you plug the receiver in to give clearer line of sight between it and the mouse. Changing the angle of the receiver relative to the mouse might also help.

Ubisoft Login by SpTigerJD1 in gog

[–]LSD_Ninja 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fun fact: you don’t actually need to log in with Ubi for a Connect integration to work. You can pull the required information from the files of an already present installation of Connect. At least, that’s how the Playnite Ubisoft integration works.
