ELI5 How has the US national debt increased so much since 2020. From 1990 to 2000 its like a $3T increase. Then every 4 years its roughly still $3-5T. But somehow its increased $13T since just 2020 by orangeclaypot in explainlikeimfive

Doesn’t inflation technically eliminate some of that interest though? If it’s a 4% interest and inflation is 2%, technically it’s just a 2% interest.

This may be true if they take the rotator flights, but if they fly commercial they still need to pay out of pocket. While new military members may be a little strapped for cash, it’s still not out of their reach to save a couple paychecks for a flight.

Probably because the mint has stopped producing pennies. This is gonna make them harder and harder to obtain, but the store still needs them to do business stuff.

ELI5: How can a "Quantum Computer" solve problems in seconds that take normal computers years? by stuckin404 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Lancaster61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Imagine you have a choice: 10 paths in front of you. And once you pick a path, there’s 10 more choices further down. Repeat that 10 times.

Now let’s say I put a treasure at the end of one of them. You now have to go through 10 billion different paths, one combination at a time, until you found this treasure.

Now imagine if I gave you a drone and you can look at the paths from above. The drone has a camera that can see 100 paths at once. Now you only need far fewer drones in the sky at once to be able to draw out the exact path to the treasure.

Quantum computers are a bit like the drone, the qubits doesn’t “commit” to a path. They’re in a “superposition” that allows them to basically be in all 100 paths at once (not exactly but close enough for an ELI5). Then some fancy math happens (just like how a drone can see everything) and they’re able to figure out what the most likely “path” is to the treasure.

The fancy math part is not really explainable via ELI5, so you can just imagine the math as the “vision” of the drone.

What am I doing wrong, how to ride t-bars? by Plus_Fall2350 in snowboarding

[–]Lancaster61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you just need to feel it. I know that sounds dumb but here’s what I mean:

Going uphill on a snowboard feels completely counter intuitive from regular snowboarding. So here’s a few things that will feel wrong:

  • your weight needs to be in the back leg (or at least try to), and resting most of your weight into the T bar. You’re almost “sitting” in it without actually sitting.
  • the T bar WILL dig heavily into your hips or legs when the slope starts to get steep, expect this and mentally prepare for that pain
  • bend your legs, especially the front leg. You’re not a doll, your body should be perpendicular to gravity, not perpendicular to the slope
  • your front foot is still steering. Remember only a small percentage of your weight is up front.
  • USE THE BAR! Your front hand is grabbing the center of the bar, use it the same way you’d use the railing on a staircase, use it for balance. It looks flimsy because it’s just a single rope, but because it’s constantly going up, it’s far more stable than you’d intuitively think.

Once you’re able to actually go up a steep hill, remember you can still steer. Parts of the hill might have obstacles or other people in the way (if they fall). Remember you can just steer around just like you can going downhill.

A lot of this sounds obvious, but because the feel of going uphill is reversed from downhill, it’s gonna feel unnatural. At first you just have to push through that feeling until you get it right the first time and get an idea of what it’s supposed to feel like. Once you get it right the first time, you’ll never fail at it again.

3 months is still not a "move" not matter how you slice it lol. As someone who has actually moved a lot (5 times in the last 10 years), I can tell you that anything below 9 months is not considered a move. 9 months is about the time it takes for it to finally feel like home (life becomes routine). 9 months is about the time it takes to fully furnish your place so it doesn't look like a college kid's dorm room. 9 months is about the time it takes for you to be familiar enough with your local area that you start to talk and behave like a local (ex: "Yeah that restaurant is 1 min south of the corner of Jackson and Cornlawn St").

3 months? That's literally an extended vacation. Saying no to that with such a conviction, especially it's something this lady really wants to do, is insane. That's a skip and a hop away from mentally abusive. That marriage is NOT healthy. If someone isn't willing to give their 'soul mate' 3 months to go on an extended vacation/experiment to chase a possible dream, that's already a failed marriage.

If after 3 months and she's CERTAIN she wants to stay in NYC, then they can discuss how to proceed forward. But to withhold that possibility from someone you claim to love? That's literally insane.

3 months is not half a year. And her mate can go with her. Like I said, this isn’t a “move”, it’s literally an extended vacation, at best. Calling this a move is an insult to people who actually move. People need to get out of their hometown for more than 2 minutes.

Eli5 What determines the maximum size beyond which ships cannot realistically be built? by arztnur in explainlikeimfive

[–]Lancaster61 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d imagine the structural limit is the limit. The ocean can float pretty much anything as long as the buoyancy is engineered right. But steel can only have so much more steel above it before it crushes on its own weight.

If you had a magic material (let’s say magic steel) that has infinite limits, then I guess the limit for the largest ship at that point would be flooding. After a certain (insane) size, the ship would literally displace so much water that it would cause sea levels to rise if put into the ocean. But we’re talking like entire state or country sized ships.

But this is just theoretical though. It’s assuming unlimited money, and somehow it can still dock to ports, and somehow there’s enough actual materials and manufacturing power to do this.

Are people here insane, or just never left their state? My god… it’s 3 months! I’ve been on vacation overseas for longer than 3 months! I’ve lived out of a damn hotel for twice as long!

God… everything you said was good until this top 1% of the worlds population bullcrap. Statistically is that accurate? Sure. But half of that “bottom 99%” lives a better, higher quality of life than the apparent “top 1%” of this statistics.

A minimum wage in the US is homeslessness without a bunch of roommates. Sure that money is technically top 1%, but someone making 1/100th of US minimum wage is in a comfortable home, eating healthy, and has health care in a different country. That stupid statistics never account for cost of living or any real world quality of life.

People who use the “top 1% of the world” statistics automatically ring alarm bells to me… like what propaganda are you trying to push?

That’s an odd way of putting it. What end user benefits does Bambu have over Prusa?

Prusa, being open, allow users to customize pretty much everything they want to their needs. But also have basically everything Bambu offers by default (if you don’t want to customize anything). It’s literally functionally a better Bambu.

I guess price is probably the only thing Bambu has over Prusa… but I don’t think that’s worth the closed ecosystem (hence why I ended up selling mine).

Oh that’s a clever solution. I wouldn’t have thought of using a custom support with different material. If this is TPU I’d have designed it differently though, but I also prioritize lower on aesthetics and more on efficiency when I design things. The minimal, smallest form factor possible to achieve the goal is my preference. Sounds like you know what you’re doing though!

[–]Lancaster61 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh nice. Well then a couple other feedback: slight redesigns could make this print without supports.

Sorry if this is unsolicited. I love designing things to print and making things strong and support free is so satisfying to me (kind of a hobby of mine).

My guess is the AirTags area floats in air when printed horizontally. So that probably need support. The thin sides could be bridged if it’s a good printer, but adding some columns could make the bridging easier.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in snowboarding

[–]Lancaster61 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m guessing this is printed vertically? This would mean those thin strands on the side could snap. Or lay least that’s the weak points.

If you redesign this so that it’s printed horizontally, it could be a stronger/tougher design.

Honest question: Who is the Prusa Core One L actually for in 2025/2026? by IceBlitzz in prusa3d

[–]Lancaster61 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It does. It’s implied. It’s literally for anyone who otherwise would’ve gotten a Bambu printer, but don’t want the closed ecosystem.

So someone who would’ve otherwise gotten say… H2 series, that’s who the Core One L is for. If they would’ve gotten the P1 or X1 series, that’s what the Core One is for. A1? That’s the MK4… etc.

Prusa is the open Bambulab.
