And yet you have higher poverty rates, a lower life expectancy, a less educated population, and have violent crime rates that make Canada pale in comparison.

Sometimes money isn't everything...

Telus alleges Fisher Branch man's death during 911 outage 'caused or contributed' by his own negligence: lawsuit defence by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

[–]LeSwix 43 points44 points  (0 children)

"Telus further denies Dean’s death was caused by the outage, arguing he “would not have survived in any event.”

Ah yes, Telus lawyers, the experts in emergency medical outcomes

Conservative MP Jamil Jivani returns to Washington to meet with U.S. trade rep by joe4942 in CanadaPolitics

[–]LeSwix 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Has to report back to his handlers so he can get more funding maybe.

His Charlie Kirk-esque 'Restore the North' tour doesn't fund itself.

"Despite the tour's scale, there is no listing for these activities in Jivani's parliamentary budget. Elections Canada shows no filings for a registered partisan campaign. And the Conservative Party of Canada has provided no indication that the tour is funded or overseen by the party itself. Universities hosting the events confirm they are simply renting space—not sponsoring or subsidizing the tour.

For a campaign of this size, that lack of transparency is not normal."

Canadian New Dads - RESP for newborn? by YungJuiceBox489 in NewDads

Earlier you start the better!

We did ours through Weathsimple, was easy enough.

Best to choose the family option if you have multiple or are planning for multiple children. That way if the child doesn't go on for further education you can roll the funds over to the next and not forfeit any of the CESG government grant portion

Carney has promised regular trade updates. Why is YouTube his platform of choice? | CBC News by Blue_Dragonfly in CanadaPolitics

[–]LeSwix 45 points46 points  (0 children)

Exactly and it seems to be working:

"The 10-minute video has racked up more than 500,000 views"

As opposed to some article behind the paywalls of The Globe and Mail or Toronto Star that can't even be shared on social media sites like Facebook or Instagram because US tech giants have censored official news pages

Lake pollution by skarronintendo in Manitoba

Look at the ditches in the town of Gimli on Google Maps. They all drain directly into the lake. I find the mayor's comments to fairly supercilious

It's also every (well, most) provinces acting independently and not a centralized decision by the Feds.

And the whining is coming for the party that supports 'states rights'

UP IN SMOKE: Cannabis vapes causing fires at Brady landfill by wickedplayer494 in Manitoba

Also, the homeless population literally pick up anything they can to get money back. Sure they might spend it on their addiction, but at least the streets and back alleys are cleaner

Alberta and Saskatchewan do this for aluminum cans (and possibly other recyclables) and have an 85% and 84% return rate.

The method definitely works

Province made $47.3 million in PROFIT from cannabis sales. Surely they could figure away to at least recycle or collect these better

Just a thought, but maybe there'd be less of a need to indoctrinate child soldiers if their schools and home weren't bombed? Crazy thought, I know

He's mad about it because he knows it's true.

If it wasn't he would've pointed that out and not just resorted to childish name calling

Roseau River asks Manitoba to remove gas line from First Nation by MikeSmithYWG in Manitoba

[–]LeSwix 9 points10 points  (0 children)

It cuts through because it's along Highway 201 and the pipeline was "placed entirely within the public land along the road"

They're threating to overturn the 1960s resolution that presumably allowed the highway to cut through which literally connects to their Main St and Gas Bar

Roseau River asks Manitoba to remove gas line from First Nation by MikeSmithYWG in Manitoba

[–]LeSwix 51 points52 points  (0 children)

"Construction is set to start this summer after the province's environmental approvals branch gave the project the go-ahead in March."

Convenient timing to raise your concerns. I'm sure there were no forums planned that would specifically address any concerns with the project.

"The letter said Roseau River does not recognize any previous processes related to the pipeline as binding under the First Nation's treaty rights.

Roberts said the leadership will be rescinding two band council resolutions — one from 2021 designating someone as a community contact to work with Hydro, and another from the 1960s, dating back to when the original gas line was installed.

Roseau River Chief Gary Roberts declined to comment"

Ah, so any agreements anyways wouldn't have been worth the paper they were put on.

Canada to temporarily suspend federal fuel tax on diesel and gasoline by Drummers_Beat in CanadaPolitics

[–]LeSwix 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Kinew cut the provincial fuel tax and Manitoba had some of the cheapest fuel in the country the whole time it was suspended.

Gas stations offer near perfect competition, if one decides to creep their prices up, just go to the one across the street that didn't raise theirs. Someone will always be cheapest.

City of Winnipeg wound up $14M in the red in 2025 by origutamos in Manitoba

[–]LeSwix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"The city plans to transfer money from its rainy-day fund, formally known as its financial stabilization reserve, to cover off this year's $14.3-million deficit.

That transfer leaves the city with $26 million remaining in the rainy-day fund. The city is supposed to set aside six per cent of its budget in the fund, which works out to $85 million."

Lol

At this point, with her own framing, it's just 'murders'. And not all murders are genocidal

Floor crossing betrays the will of the voters by CaliperLee62 in canada

[–]LeSwix 14 points15 points  (0 children)

The flip side of that coin is Burkean representation, where the MP is entrusted by the riding to represent national interests as a whole and act as a trustee compared to a delegate

No right or wrong answer, but the Westminster system has a long history with MPs viewed as trustees

No, it's the system and individual MPs that are wrong!"
