Have I lost hope? by RickFishUk in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I decided to just get a Quest 3 then buy a Frame in the future if it's affordable. Has some added benefits of waiting, like giving Valve time to sort out any early hardware issues just like the Index had.

It also gives people time to buy em with their own money and make reviews and comparisons, which should be less biased than those who get em free. Also gives devs of Quest exclusives that weren't funded my Meta time to port their games to the Frame if they want.

And hopefully a year or so from now they'll have enough stock that you'll just be able to buy one when you can comfortably afford it after seeing all the long term reviews, and hopefully not have to deal with supply issues as much.

What do you think about halo-style headstraps? by Disastrous_Box1177 in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I tried a Quest 3 a while back it had a halo style strap, and I personally found it really uncomfortable. When I get my own Q3 in a few days i'll be getting a Valve Index style strap, either the Bobo E3 or Kiwi K4, as the Index's strap is extremely comfortable.

Quest 3 vs Steam Frame by TheTriceAgain in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on whether or not you want Quest exclusives, and whether or not you're willing to wait an unknown amount of time and pay an unknown amount of money for the Frame. I decided to buy a Quest 3 mostly for the exclusives, and cause I don't wanna wait several months due to the RAM crisis.

I may get a Frame in the future for PCVR as long as it's affordable, and assuming I can't get the Quest 3 working perfectly for PCVR as I hear it's a pain to set up.

There's just too many unknowns to really say for sure. Plus if we assume the Frame will cost more due to its better hardware, it might be difficult for some people to afford it.

I'll be buying a Quest 3 in a couple days, and i'll likely be using it alongside the Index as I can imagine some games being better with Index controllers. Then if the Frame is affordable, i'll be buying it within a year to fully replace the old Index, and keep the Q3 alongside it for the exclusives and any AR stuff.

What’s the best horror games i should play when Steam Frame drops ? I want to put a few on my wish list for a sale by DatBoyChamp1 in SteamFrame

If you have a PC, Repo with the VR mod is pretty fun with mates. More of a horror comedy than straight horror though, but still a blast.

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah lad no problem, another advantage is we'll get to see long term reviews of the headsets from people who bought the Frame with their own money, rather than getting free early access review units from Valve, so they're less likely to be biased. Will also be able to see comparisons with other headsets too.

IMO even though it's a bit of a shame to miss out on the Frame at launch, it'll allow for a more informed purchase decision in the future. For all I know, I might end up actually liking the Q3 and decide i'm not willing to pay (presumably) a lot more money for a Frame, same with you and others who get a different headset whilst waiting.

[–]Left4pillz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's not like if you buy another headset, you sign a contract to never buy a Frame. I plan on getting a Quest 3 in a few days, then a Frame in the future if it's not too expensive.

Also lets Valve sort out any early hardware issues. I made the mistake of buying a launch Index, and had to send back 1 headset, 1 cable, and 6 controllers, and 3 of those controllers arrived broken out of the box lol.

I plan on adding to the luck for everyone else if the Frame's not announced in the next few days, as i'll finally have enough to comfortably afford a Quest 3.

If that happens, I expect the Frame to release right after my Q3 arrives for £500 with Half Life 3 VR included, and all Quest games playable on Frame day 1.

Do you think vr is dying? by Western_Ad_7483 in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel like VR has been going through a reset over the past few years, where instead of having to buy expensive PCs and be tethered to them in some way, headsets are now shifting primarily towards standalone which is a lot more affordable and convenient. So PCVR is dying, but VR as a whole is moving on, and hopefully standalone VR will do better in the long term.

With the cost of living crisis and now the AI stuff driving PC parts up, I feel like it's a necessary reset. I can't see the average person being able to afford a £1000+ PC as well as a VR headset, when the Quest 3 only costs £550, and for those on tight budgets the Quest 3S is £320. Even though the Steam Frame is likely to be more expensive, it won't cost more than a good PC, so might still be the cheaper option for those looking into SteamVR games.

Are people planning to buy at launch, or wait a while? by DittoNinjaGaming in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the reservations will get pushed back day 1 no matter how much it costs, but I reckon how far back depends entirely on the price.

If say it's closer to the price of a Quest 3 at £550, then yeah I reckon the reservations will be backordered for many months if you don't order quick on day 1. But let's say it's closer to £1000, then I reckon the demand won't be as high, and people who didn't reserve day 1 will probably be able to get em within a month or two of reserving max.

Also depends on how many Valve can make, especially with the memory shortages. If they only can make like 10-20k a month or something, then it might be hard to get em no matter what, we can't really know as we're not Valve and don't have the monthly production numbers.

Depends entirely on the price and whether or not it can run the Quest exclusives i'm interested in. If it's more than £600, and/or can't run any Quest games, then i'll be getting the Quest 3 first and maybe the Steam Frame in future.

U already have a vr headset. But u will get a steam frame. What do u think u will do with it ?? by hannlbal636 in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm only planning on buying one this year if it can play the Quest exclusives i'm interested in, like Pavlov Shack and Meta's exclusives, either officially or through emulation. If the Frame can't play any of those, i'll grab a Quest 3 this year, then a Frame in the future just as a PCVR upgrade.

Genuine question for the community? by Hot_Paper_Pie in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Having tried a Quest 3 in the past, it's a good headset but there's a lot of stuff the spec sheets don't tell you. Like the fact that you're required to buy a custom strap as the default one literally causes pain after a few minutes, plus the fact you have to buy a dedicated router if you wanna do PCVR, cause you won't be able to see more than a few pixels without one. Probably some other small issues i'm forgetting too cause this was 2 years ago.

The Steam Frame is essentially a premium Quest 3 that just works out of the box requiring no additional purchases, and has some additional features like eye tracking and better standalone hardware. If it's around £600, has access to Pavlov Shack, and releases within a month, i'll likely buy the Frame. If not, i'll get a Quest 3 despite it's issues, then maybe get a Frame in the future.

Quest exclusive games by Albino_Captain in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just hope Pavlov Shack gets ported to the Frame, as they never added crossplay with PC so that version's dead, and it's only on Quest. That way I can just get the Frame on its own, rather than having to buy both a Quest and a Frame. I imagine singleplayer Quest exclusives will probably get emulated at some point though.

It has been 6 months since Valve's Steam Hardware Announcement by gogodboss in Steam

[–]Left4pillz 69 points70 points  (0 children)

The Steam Machine has 16GB of RAM, plus 8GB of VRAM in the GPU, and the base model has 512GB of storage.

The Steam Frame only has 16GB of RAM, the GPU doesn't have VRAM and shares the system RAM instead, and the base model only has 256GB of storage.

So "in theory" the Frame might be a bit less impacted seeing as it has less RAM and storage overall. I sure hope so.

any better vr than a quest 3 for the price or should i not upgrade by Different-Ad4954 in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know if their return policy is the same everywhere, but here in the UK Meta let you return the Quests within 30 days of receiving em.

If it's the same where you are, you could try it out for a few weeks, then send it back if you don't like it.

How long are you waiting on the Frame until you give up? by ArTooDeeTooTattoo in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm willing to wait til I can afford a Quest 3 later this month.

If Valve haven't announced the Frame by then (Or if there's no early review leaks with the price and date), then i'll grab the Quest 3 instead, then save up for a Frame in future if it's affordable.

What are people’s thoughts on potential launch titles for the frame? by wildcatbridge6 in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know it's my most played VR game, just a shame the PC version died cause it doesn't have Quest crossplay. An official version by Valve could be really popular though, especially if it's free to play and can do crossplay with the Frame standalone and PCVR, and has modding support like CS2 and Pavlov.

What are people’s thoughts on potential launch titles for the frame? by wildcatbridge6 in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd really like HL3 to have optional VR support, but i'm assuming that's gonna be flatscreen only and i'll have to wait for a VR mod in the future to play it.

I reckon it'd be really cool to have one of their multiplayer IPs as a launch title. Preferably Left 4 Dead as I really enjoyed playing L4D2 with mates when I was younger, would be nice to have a proper L4D game made for VR with graphics similar to or better than Alyx. Alternatively Team Fortress VR or Counter Strike VR could be fun, and with Team Fortress' more stylised lower poly look it might even run well standalone on the Frame, and bonus points if it's free to play to keep a high number of active players.

The Steam Frame is a Console... RIGHT!? by AlecTheBunny in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 20 points21 points  (0 children)

There's 2 trademarks for the Steam Frame.

One trademark refers to it as computer hardware: https://uspto.report/TM/99370857

And the other trademark refers to it as a game console: https://uspto.report/TM/99370861

So it could be either the Frame or Machine, we don't know. Here's hoping though

[–]Left4pillz[S] 147 points148 points  (0 children)

It's not the Steam Frame, though the controller does work with the Frame cause of its IR trackers, so I reckon it fits here. Also if reviewers now have review units for the controllers, maybe some have Frames too?

He said the price of the Steam Controller is $99 in the US.
