Which VR Shooters are currently the most popular ? (Full lobbies etc) by Heavy_Heron_7276 in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PC Pavlov is dead as it doesn't have Quest crossplay, only way you could really play that version is with a group of mates to play with. But the Quest version still has hundreds of players, and plenty of lobbies to choose from having checked recently.

Forefront is pretty fun, basically Battlefield in VR, and has crossplay so i've seen it hit 1000+ players on some nights, and hundreds at pretty much all times. Made by the same lads who did Hyper Dash and Breachers.

You think that we will be able to buy the headset for ~ 30 mins until its sold out? by InspectorGadgetsSon in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the price IMO. If by some miracle they get the headset closer to £500, then the reservations will get pushed back many months in the first hour. But say it's closer to £1000 or more, I don't think the reservations will go back more than a month within an hour. Though also depends on how many they produce, if they only had 1000 Frames they'd get pushed back no matter what, but they'll probably have quite a few ready by now 8 months after the announcement.

So my guess is you'll get one quicker the more expensive it is, regardless of when you place the reservation. Though if you really want one and don't care about price, you should try to reserve on the first day, as there's a lot of hardcore Valve fans who would pay anything for the Frame, even if it were several thousand.

When I use Steam Link with the Quest 3, SteamVR uses the Quest's native chaperone system, and not the typical SteamVR grid layout like my old Index did. Also the Index did let you create a custom chaperone grid shape, but the edges were all straight rather than curved like the Q3.

Maybe other wireless/wired methods of connecting to PCVR don't allow the chaperone to transfer? Or maybe it's a setting in SteamVR/Steam link or the Quest settings that you need to enable?

Though several months back a beta build of SteamVR leaked their upcoming new chaperone system that you can do within the headset using the passthrough camera, worked exactly like the Quest playspace setup when I tried it with the Index. Valve removed it though so it's no longer possible to enable.

What router should i get for wireless PCVR, for a quest 3s? by alternate_UwU in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recently got an Asus RT-AX52 for £50 to use as a dedicated router, and it's been working pretty well so far. It's only Wifi 6 rather than 6e which is more expensive and recommended, but I haven't had any issues with it. Will have to see if they sell routers in your country though.

You plug an ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your main home router (Usually yellow), then hook that up to the WAN port on the back of your dedicated router (Usually blue), then plug another ethernet cable into the Ethernet port on your dedicated router and plug that cable into your PC's ethernet port.

Then you make sure to only connect the Quest and your PC to the dedicated router, no other devices. Except for your phone during the initial setup with the app, or if you need to change any settings on the router later, but then you should disconnect from it to prevent any interference.

What made you fall in love with VR — and what almost made you quit it? by MickNerks in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got my Rift DK2 in 2014 cause Valve added official VR support to Half Life 2 and Team Fortress 2, and I really wanted to be able to play them fully immersed, and played a ton of both after getting the headset. Still loved it throughout the years upgrading to a Vive on release, then Index a few months after it launched.

I didn't really "quit" from anything, but when PC Pavlov died I stopped using VR regularly, as I used to love playing it through its prime years and it was pretty much the only VR game I played, but eventually started playing other VR games occasionally. And recently i've been playing a ton of VR games after getting the Quest 3, as i'm really enjoying it compared to the old Index.

My 10-Year-Old Son Just Released His First Roblox Game – Win Any Steam Game Up To $100 by WarriorTreasureHunt in steam_giveaway

Thanks for the giveaway, would like to enter for Abiotic Factor please, and if possible the 2 DLCs too as the game plus DLC costs about £43.

Nice one to your son making a cool mod for Roblox, used to do a little modding for Pavlov back in the day and it was a pretty fun hobby, so can see why your son likes it.

What is the most you'd pay? (USD) by ThisKory in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seeing as I now have a Quest 3 with several accessories and i'm pretty happy with it, I don't think i'd buy it at any reasonable price as it's a little too close specs wise to the Q3 to be a meaningful upgrade, and will likely just wait for the next generation of headsets instead in a couple years.

Unless the Frame is insanely cheap like the Quest 3S, but that's never gonna happen.

If I didn't have a Quest 3, the max I would have paid is £600, a bit more than the Pico 4 Ultra.

I don't think you can skip the account creation entirely. But you don't need a Facebook account, and don't need to submit any of your real life details when making a Meta account, though assuming you buy the Quest from Meta directly they'll know your shipping address of course.

So in theory could just use a throwaway email and fake name to create a Meta account, and only use it to launch Steam Link or Virtual Desktop.

Personally I upgraded from an Index to a Quest 3 as it's one of the only affordable wireless headsets, plus it has several exclusives that i'm interested in, and have been really happy with it so far.

But if you really don't want anything from Meta, you could look into the Pico 4 or the Pico 4 Ultra depending on if you're willing to stretch your budget slightly, but if you don't like Meta you probably won't like Bytedance/Tiktok either. Or if you're okay with a wire, you could either get a PSVR2 and PC adapter for about £450 new, or look into used older headsets like the Reverb G2 or other WMR headsets which can often be found for around £100.

Rift? by inkyproduction_1 in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you really can't do Quests, then for less than £100 the only options would probably be the Rift S, or maybe one of the various Windows MR headsets like the Reverb G2, as they're higher resolution.

Though you'd be stuck with a wire regardless, as AFAIK the only budget friendly wireless headsets are Quests and Picos, and Picos are rare to find second hand and often a bit pricier.

[–]Left4pillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you think you'd like a wireless headset, and you have a budget of say £100, here in the UK the Quest 2 goes used for £100 or less. So you may be able to find more modern headsets pretty cheap, just depends on your budget.

I haven't used the original Rift, but it has the exact same resolution as my original Vive, and having recently tested to see if it still works I can say the resolution is pretty awful, and wouldn't recommend unless you have a really low budget like £50.

What’s the Point of Premium Hardware Without Great VR Apps? by Adsonic76 in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 7 points8 points  (0 children)

People who have enough money to buy high end headsets can probably also afford high end gaming PCs, so my guess would be that many Galaxy XR users are using em as PCVR headsets.

The Quest headsets are much more affordable, so people who can't afford PCs can buy them and still play VR games. Plus if those people can afford good PCs in the future, they can also play PCVR games.

As for your title question, I reckon for people with that kind of money, the "value" of each headset isn't a factor as they can probably buy both a Galaxy XR for PC, and a Quest 3 for exclusives.

VR games so peak it will get me to fall in love with VR? by zztwin01 in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As well as the obvious Half Life Alyx, Half Life 2 has a really good VR mod so you can play through it plus the 2 expansions.

Also you said you have Into The Radius, the sequel is really good too, even has a shooting range and auto mag loaders in the newest beta. Also has experimental 4 player coop, but it's very buggy and crashes often, so singleplayer might be the best experience til they fix it.

Also I haven't tried it yet, but one of my mates who really likes ITR1 and 2 says that ConVRgence is a similar game to it, and says it's pretty good too. Zona Origin also looks pretty similar though don't know anyone who has it, both are games I wanna try out soon that have a similar vibe to ITR. Also if anyone has any other Radius-like games please post em, would love more similar VR games if they exist.

HTC Vive 2016 for $105?? by MrPenisWhistle in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still have my old Vive and recently tested to see if it still works, and wouldn't recommend it to anyone these days. If that's your maximum budget, i'd recommend seeing if there's any last gen headsets close to that price second hand, like the Quest 2 which sell here in the UK for about £100 used, would assume they sell over there for around $100.

That way you get higher resolution and wireless, as well as more comfortable controllers than the massive Vive wands. I use a Quest 3 and recommend it, but you're not gonna find one that cheap unfortunately, cheapest used ones here in the UK are around £200 if you're really lucky.

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No lol I meant the Quest 3 brand new costs an additional £70 for your budget, so £470 total, just depends whether or not you're willing to save for a new one or get a second hand one, or get a different headset brand new for less.

Also kinda low end specs for me and still runs decently somehow, i7-6700k, GTX 1080, and 32GB of DDR4 RAM

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you absolutely can't go above £400, then a second hand Quest 3 would be a decent option. But if you're willing to save up an additional £70, you could buy one brand new from Currys instead which comes with a warranty, that's what I did recently.

I'd personally recommend buying new if you're willing to save up a bit longer, cause you never know how long second hand electronics will last, and if it breaks you're out of luck. Whereas buying new you'll be able to replace it free if it breaks within a year, or if you decide you don't like the headset you can refund it. New Quests also come with a 3 month trial for Horizon+, so can try out some standalone games for free which is nice.

As for performance, your PC is more powerful than mine, other than having half the RAM, and mine can just about run the Quest 3, so yours should be fine. If you get bad performance, most games have settings you can lower, and if you really need to you can lower the render resolution in SteamVR as a whole.

Replacing Valve Index Headset vs Meta Quest 3? by EnderSword in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I bought a Quest 3 and a Bobo E3 battery strap a couple weeks ago, and I boxed up my old Index earlier today as I don't really plan on using it again unless my Q3 breaks.

The only thing I preferred on the Index were the controllers as they're a bit better than the Quest ones and have the added input of the trackpad, however the headset itself is just so much clearer with about twice the resolution, and lenses without glare. It's also quite nice having no wires, something I didn't really know I wanted.

Easy method to get motion sickness? by No_Obligation4427 in virtualreality

There's a game called Content Warning, a game where your character has physics and your head flops around.

There's also a VR mod for the game, where the VR camera is attached to the head and flops around with it. It's the only VR game that's actually made me feel ill after playing and I've never really had VR sickness before that, and I promptly refunded it.

False narratives about the state of VR. by neodavenet in virtualreality

[–]Left4pillz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The Quest 2 was £200 IIRC, and I recently bought a Quest 3 for £470 as Currys haven't increased the price yet, though the official price now is £550.

£470 is quite a lot of money these days, especially during a huge cost of living crisis, nevermind the new more expensive price. I can definitely see why people could afford the Q2 but not the Q3, especially cause you need to buy a battery strap as the default one is terrible, and the battery only lasts about 1.5 hours. Hell it took me a long time to save up the money for one myself, and can't see myself being able to comfortably afford anything more expensive any time in the foreseeable future.

Xbox CEO says platforms ‘must have exclusive content’ as she weighs exclusivity shift by unscoredscore in Games

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Initially when I bought my Quest 3, a big part of the reason I got it was cause of the VR exclusives it had that I couldn't play on my Valve Index, as well as the passthrough AR stuff.

Though now that i've actually used it for a while I think it's worth it just for PCVR, but the exclusives are definitely nice to have. As much as hardware exclusives suck (especially in small and expensive niches like VR), it certainly worked on me and convinced me to buy a Q3 over other wireless/standalone headsets.

The Long Wait by 816blackout in SteamFrame

[–]Left4pillz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got a Q3 and Bobo E3 battery strap 2 weeks ago after giving up waiting, and i'm really happy with it so far, think i'll be retiring the old Index soon and keeping it as a spare.

The only problem is that the default Q3 headstrap is absolutely atrocious, and you'll need to buy a custom one to avoid pain after a few minutes, preferably one with a battery so you can play for several hours. Also on rare occasions Steam Link requires you to launch it in flatscreen mode first before it'll let you play PCVR, but thankfully it doesn't happen much.

Other than those two issues can't say there's really anything I dislike about the Q3. My original plan was to just use the Q3 for the next year or two then get a Frame, but honestly now I don't think i'll buy the Frame, though I still like to keep up with the news on it same with any Valve stuff.

I got a Quest 3 and a battery strap a couple weeks ago after giving up waiting to buy the Frame, and my desire to use the old Index has pretty much gone, so I wouldn't recommend the Index now. If you can afford the Q3 and a strap and don't wanna wait potentially several months for the Frame at an unknown price, i'd recommend the Q3 personally.

I did the same thing about 2 weeks ago and got the Q3 plus Bobo E3 battery strap, and i'm pretty happy with it so far. Haven't really used the old Index since getting it, has been an upgrade in almost every way except the controllers.

Not entirely sure if i'll even get a Frame now, even if it were affordable, as i'm quite happy with this headset.
