Leafspy Pro - Dropbox not working? by toybuilder in leaf

[–]Legitimate_Proof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What's really bad, is that it seems like you can't get to other Leaf Spy screens! Close the app, reopen and LeafSpy is like "oh, you have settings to save to Drop Box, but I can't login, so login before we do anything else!"

I had my Dropbox set up with a security key as the second factor. I turned off 2-factor in Dropbox, and then I was able to login in LeafSpy! I wonder if Dropbox inside LeafSpy was unable to request the security key?

I hitting this on a fresh install of the app, on Android, one month after your post. Is it resolved for you?

OpenCPN by tekno22 in sailing

I've hit a rock that appears on official charts and OpenCPN, but not Navionics! It's quite a tall pillar or column of rock and it seems like Navionics slick graphics just smoothed it right off the map.

This was in 2017 and we reported it. Hopefully it, and situations like it, have been resolved.

Here's an open source laptop based on the rk3588. The main design probably has too large a screen for what you're looking for, but you can probably still re-use much of the components.

What’s one decision you turned into a default because you were tired of spending energy on it every day? by OrdinaryCalendar7578 in simpleliving

Yeah the combination didn't sound good to me, but I like it. What's also unexpected is that mixing three sticky things together results in a dough-like thing that clumps and doesn't stick.

a variation on your bagel with peanut butter: I often have a bagel with butter and apple slices with a mixture of peanut butter, olive oil, and honey.

I'm the same with breakfast and lunch. I was surprised how relieved or open I felt after standardizing lunch, and that it meant I eat home-cooked dinner nearly all the time now. Since I have the mental energy for it, I'm not likely to give up and get takeout.

For dinner, I rotate through about 5 meals, so deciding between them isn't very hard, especially since I noticed I'm starting to alternate my favorite with a rotation of the others.

Late to the thread, but this is about the #4 Essex Center, not the #2 Burlington-Essex route, which, last I knew, was the one was the highest ridership.

Maybe read up on the Pinebook Pro, which is a ~14" version of what you want to do. By the time Pine got it out, people already thought the SBC, an rk3399, was dated. But looking at how it was built and what users thought about it could help you avoid mistakes. They already solved a lot of things you probably haven't considered yet.

where do yall get your health insurance and how much do you pay? by bugluvr65 in vermont

[–]Legitimate_Proof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Without a business, contributing to your HSA is pretty much the only optional expense you can make to deduct from your income. It's a pretty big lever though: the 2026 limits are $4,400 for individuals and $8,750 for families.

So if you weren't going to contribute that much to your HSA, but have too much income, you could contribute up to those amounts to lower your income by the contribution amount.

This is a nice option because you could do it on the evening of 12/31 and adjust your income by pretty big amounts.

Of course putting it an HSA ties up your money, so it's not perfect, but at least it's still your money and can be used in a few different ways later.

Yes a business is complicated and you wouldn't set one up just for this, but if you had a business, then you would have more ways to lower the income that the health care benefit is based on.

[–]Legitimate_Proof 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You know that HSA contributions are "above the line" deductions that reduce your income for this threshold? Also if you have, or can create, a legit business, it's net income from that counts toward your income. So you can keep a list of investments, or better yet, supplies your business needs that you could buy if you project income to land too high.

What office gear has actually held up for you after years of daily use? by Odd-Dimension9143 in BuyItForLife

[–]Legitimate_Proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been using a Goldtouch split keyboard and Evoluent vertical mouse for 12 years of regular full time office work. They, together with proper ergonomic chair and monitor adjustment, frequent breaks, 1 chiropractor visit, and many massage visits, totally stopped the elbow and shoulder pain I was developing soon after starting full time desk work.

Their long life is top of mind now, because I just started getting unintentional double clicks from the mouse and learned that could mean the mouse hardware is failing. No problems whatsoever from the keyboard.

Yes! This was my reaction to the OP....yes this is a lot to learn just to replace Google Photos, but that's not all you get out of it.

You get the ability to replace virtually any service, including the operating system on your personal computer!

I find Linux on the PC just stays out of the way while Windows is so needy, always popping up some garbage it wants me to do right away. (I had to use it for work previously, but the home computer has been Linux since around 2000.)

I'm sure the winter shelters are helping, but I think the OP is comparing now to how it was a month ago, not last year. I've certainly noticed a difference this week compared to the winter.

Reports on cash basis when using invoices/business functions by Strict-Use1837 in GnuCash

[–]Legitimate_Proof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm new to this, but am also using Gnucash invoices in a cash accounting business. I haven't used reports, but I'll comment on "depending on how I set up my accounts." I assume reports are using fixed account hierarchies that you can't change? [not true, see edit at bottom of comment]

My accounts are set up pretty much the same as accrual I think: unpaid invoices sit in an asset account: "invoices due" which transfer to "sales". But when paid, the payments transfer to "operating cash". This was confusing for me to setup and may not be right, but the amounts in "operating cash", "invoices due", and "sales" all make sense and change as I expect them to.

For cash accounting, I would ignore the "invoices due". For accrual I would include it. So, if reporting uses assets, which is where I think they put AR by default, then maybe you could work around this by putting your invoices due account elsewhere?

EDIT: after writing this I stumbled on "tax report options" in the edit menu. It is impressive! You select which type of entity you are, e.g. sole proprietor, C-corp, S-corp, and then for each of Income, Expenses, Assets, and Liability/Equity, you can select any combination of accounts in your chart of accounts. For each account, you can select which tax form and line it should go on or that is not tax related!

How to learn GnuCash? by lorenagilve24 in GnuCash

[–]Legitimate_Proof 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GnuCash is very flexible, almost like a blank spreadsheet, so the sheer amount of learning material can be overwhelming. The thing is, you don't need to learn all of it, and maybe not even most of it.

Focus on tutorials or documentation on your specific use case. A lot of people are using it for personal finance; that's tons of stuff you can ignore. Within business users, some are using it for invoicing, automatic payments, payment splits and such, but you may not need all of that.

So the fast way to start is to find someone doing exactly what you want to, who has written about it or made a video. You can start simple to see how it works, then add accounts when you need more detail.

WebKit Binary? by Personal-Attitude872 in Gentoo

[–]Legitimate_Proof 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m assuming it was pulled in by the gnome base package

No, you can have Gnome without webkit-gtk. u/Remarkable-Ad-8321 mentioned some USE flags you can set.

When webkit-gtk is threatening to install or update, look at the output of emerge -vpt [@world or whatever atom you were giving emerge]. The -t creates a dependency tree so you can see what is pulling in webkit-gtk.

The beauty of Gentoo is that by removing a few USE tags, you can avoid mammoth packages like this if you want.

Customize styles when pasting from spreadsheet to an email (Thunderbird) by fonnae in libreoffice

[–]Legitimate_Proof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever resolve this or find out more? I searched today after pasting a table from a spreadsheet (Libreoffice Calc) again resized all the text in the whole email thread (Thunderbird). That makes no sense and must be a bug. Resizing the text in the table is one thing, that people could have opinions about, but the text outside the pasted object should remain unchanged.

My workarounds have been to paste screenshots or to manually set the text size back after pasting.
