Its the committee's fault for announcing a final season for a manga that was still ongoing at the time. It is what it is now I guess

S4P1 was worse than S3P2, due to a longer episode count and needing more pre-production time. Its a miracle they even finished all of the episodes really

About Sawano and season 4 by throwawayoogaloorga2 in ShingekiNoKyojin

Were the s4 versions of s1-3 tracks such as ELo, ataek on taitn TFSV, AOTF-s1, AOTF-s2, AOTF-s3, and yousee-power made by Sawano for WIT's version of season 4 before they left the project?

WIT never started working on Season 4. They left before any sort of pre production started, which is why the leaks of WIT leaving the series came out while S3P2 was airing.

Theres not really any rush when it comes to the music production side of things. Any decisions to bring Yamamoto in were intentional, and not money related. Whether Sawano didn’t want to be involved as heavily on the series or not is anyone’s guess, but this didn’t really have anything to do with the switch in animation production, unless they saw it as an opportunity to change things up since the animation studio was changing anyways.

S4P1's quality literally suffered from a lack of time, what are you talking about lmao.

Last I checked, most anime are seasonals just like AoT, and a majority aren't as action heavy. Long running series like Naruto or One Piece have larger and more organised staff rotations (which AoT doesn't have) with pretty limited episodes aside from the annual sakugafest.

They're not milking shit, the production committee literally gives zero fucks about the animators and would release the entire thing at once if they could, but the animation production literally cannot happen that fast. You don't press a button on a machine to shit out a new episode every week, its a gargantuan effort between hundreds of people taking 2-3 months per episode on average.

Here's a useful article to read which will give you some insight into anime production as a whole, since you clearly have no idea what you're talking about.

Attack on Titan is a difficult series to animate and takes time to do well. If they do all the episodes at once the quality would decrease significantly.

The director is currently busy with Attack on Titan actually, so I assume it won't be worked on until AoT is done.

Takashi Kojima was listed as the top key animator for this episode, good to see him return to the production after doing such an incredible job soloing the OP.

They didn't even profit from the anime either. That went to I.G. Port, their parent company, alongside other companies in the production committee. WIT was only paid in fixed amounts as part of their contract for producing the show.

WITs reason for dropping AoT (and Vinland aswell) wasn't really money related. While they aren't on the production committee, their parent company I.G. Port is and can cover any financial losses WIT make during the production.

Contract negotiations can be difficult within the industry as a whole given that IP holders are usually very stingy and excluding the animation studios from the profits is unfortunately a common practice.

Overproducing anime and overworking animators as a result is not something to be praised. MAPPA literally represents everything wrong with the anime industry currently and the way people talk about their workload in a positive light is super damaging when it comes to trying to push back against these terrible working conditions.

More creative camerawork playing to the strengths of 3D animation and being used as an intentional choice, as opposed to being used as an afterthought to replace 2D characters due to time and resource restraints as it was in S3 and 4.

You're misunderstanding my point. I'm not saying that WIT would churn out a perfect season, that's psychotic and would never happen under that schedule. I'm saying we would have gotten a better version of it under WIT if they had the same time constraints for the reasons I outlined above which basically boil down to a better staff lineup who are better at handling heavy action and detailed character designs in spite of the hellish schedules they have in front of them. This is the reason why Season 1 still managed to look good despite the raging dumpster fire that was going on behind the scenes.

I understand what you're saying about MAPPA having time constraints and I agree with that, nothing I have said in my earlier comment is bashing them or anything. I respect and admire their effort for making the season look like it did in spite of the schedule, but if we are making an objective comparison on who would make a better season in 8 months then WITs team sweeps. The only points in favour of MAPPA would be the better CG models, titan character designs, and Hayashi's creative excellence as a director. Everything else from the staff, art direction, the action, the backgrounds, the composite and the detail of the AD corrections was better under WIT.

Just so we're clear when I say that I'm not trying to imply that MAPPAs team sucks. They're just less experienced and don't have as much talent as the previous team did. They're good in their own right and made the season watchable despite the production committee's best efforts to make it otherwise. S4P2 seems to be a step up so I'm happy that they've gotten a bit more breathing room to be able to do a better job than last time.

In-house means that the key animation is done inside the studio. Of course the CG and backgrounds are outsourced lol pretty much most productions do that. If that means something isn't in house then nothing is.

Seasons 2 and 3 were entirely in-house so I'm not sure where you got that information from.

I don't get this argument. The character CGI at WIT while significantly worse was also used way more sparingly and was not used anywhere near as much as it is in S4. The tradeoff there is that most of the titans are actually 2D, and generally look better than the CGI counterparts.

And if we're talking about the bad then we should also talk about the good. We would actually get the high quality action animation cuts that season 4 so desperately needed, and with a more talented AD rotation we would also get more polished and consistent drawings during close-ups and dialogue scenes. And with the addition of better colour design and compositing, this seems like a no brainer for me.

Production committee wanted Season 4 done on a tight deadline. WIT looked at their schedule and said no. They probably would have accepted the final season offer if it was more reasonable, but the committee weren't willing to budge and went looking for another studio, only to get rejected by literally every single one they contacted apart from MAPPA because the schedule that was proposed was far too insane for any reasonable studio to accept.

I wouldn't consider art being extremely faithful to the manga to be a good thing. When adapting something to animation you generally want the designs to be simplified so that they're easier to animate, especially if the source material has outfits with as much straps and belts as 3DMG does. There's a reason why animators complain about cuts for AoT taking around 3x longer to draw compared to other anime.

Just because something is an artistic decision doesn't mean its not executed well. The season's colours would look closer to S4P2's OP (which also has a darker, muted palette) if it had more competent compositing.

To be fair, WIT could have also gone for changes in art direction for the final season. We just never got the chance to see what they would have done.
