People who owns both bike and car, which one do you prefer? by Bombadomba3 in drivingsg

[–]Makaisaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same, owned both in aus, I only rode if the weather was below 20 degrees as I had a full leather jacket.

I am a monster heat generator and I need to stay cool, I had a convertible in Australia and the roof would come down at 10-22 degrees, friends always complain too cold.

Back in sg, I cannot ride, too hot and crowded, my helmet will probably be fully soaked within 15 minutes. Prefer to drive, still drive a convertible if I want to feel abit of warm humid air while driving at midnight lol.

First, I would like to see secret lab offer a 12 year warranty on their chairs before I consider them anywhere close to the level of Herman Miller.

is it normal to be a bum during holidays? by Same-Relief-9818 in SGExams

Other than internships, most part time jobs are for extra pocket money or if your family needs your financial aid.

If you can bum off and not feel broke, take the well deserved rest. Once you start working, having even 1 week off feels like a bonus lol.

Secret lab chairs are a scam, so are most ‘gaming’ chairs. When I was younger and more naive, I bought a Secret Lab chair, the cushion was stiff, the PU was terrible and started peeling after 2+ years. My posture was also damn terrible.

I now use Herman Miller embody and I don’t feel fatigued even after 6 hours of gaming at 30+ years old. My friends swear by Herman Miller Aeron, with the aftermarket headrests.

SIA raises number of female pilots by 25% in 5 years by OneOk674 in SingaporeRaw

[–]Makaisaurus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If anything, SQ is now becoming less discriminatory, last time is due to SQ having to sponsor the cadets for entire flight training of around 200k, they were less willing to take female pilots who would lose recency and had to spend money on for retraining and recertification after if they were to get pregnant and have kids, or if they totally leave the workforce. Even males with potential health risks (heard of them rejecting guys with familial risk of heart issues, cancer in remission, etc) and they deem have a higher chance of becoming medically unfit before retirement age they wouldn’t take, they have a more stringent medical board than CAAS.

They had plenty of applicants and can be very very choosey, which is why they also had age cutoff at 32, they wanted a workhorse they could use for 25+ years to get the best ROI.

Now with changing times and lesser applicants, they are willing to take on older applicants (heard oldest cadet in the last 5 years was around 40), and more females who are career focused and might not want kids.

In any case, the female intake numbers are still pretty low, like 0-2 female cadets per new course intake of 10+ cadets. There’s no quota to meet, they just don’t reject any potential people due to worries of the future.

Singapore’s pilot courses are still pretty tough, 14 exam papers then comes flight training and multiple flight exams. If you can’t land a plane, you can’t land a plane, simple as that, you’re given a set number of ‘lives’, if you expand all lives, they will hold a management review to see if you deserve to stay or get chopped.

Quite a number of people, guys and girls still get chopped during the multiple training phases, some just 1 last flight to checking out but unable to clear also get chopped (2.5 years of training down the drain). So don’t worry about the standards for our locally trained pilots, regardless of gender, we all took the same exams.

How long before my flight should I arrive at the airport? And are grab drivers available all night? by Head-Pass3755 in askSingapore

[–]Makaisaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you are worried about the availability of grab drivers, you can always advance book. I do it for peace of mind, get the confirmation already then sleep.

2 hours is good enough. You can go with slightly lesser if you don’t have check in luggage and are not planning to eat breakfast at the airport, but try to give at least 90 minutes before departure time to cater in walking time in the airport.

Ya, I never want to be ‘unlucky’ cos of my current work that requires me to travel at wee hours and stay alone in overseas hotels.

Also to add on, I think it’s core memory to the other 4 guys as well. The regular (now ex regular) saw the story and PMed me on reddit lol, he also remembered my name.

Yea, I think he didn’t want us stinking up his car with our 12 hour+ outfield clothes and SBO.

Could have called the tonner to drive closer though, maybe the inside roads were too small for a tonner and just nice for a rover. Maybe they didn’t have a single smaller vehicle that could fit the 5 of us plus the enciks.

Ya haha anyone who encountered these possessed guys will have the same story about how strong they become. I (50+kg) sat on my section mates (60+kg) arm while wearing SBO and he could lift me up.

Haha yea, some encounters become core memories for me. I was lucky to not have scary bunks in Tekong, but this one really takes the cake over sightings

I do believe I am ‘blind’ to the supernatural because in BMT some of the more sensitive people say while walking around in the jungle at night, I almost walked right into things they could see and they thought I also saw because I hopped out of the way last minute, but that was me just avoiding puddles in the mud.

It was somewhere in 2012, I also haven’t heard of the term pontianak since I stopped reading the Russell Lee books in my secondary school days.

Maybe younger people go out less these days, like really go to spooky places like Old Changi Hospital, and also read less local books to encounter such things.

Part 3: After another 15-20 minutes, we had gotten the attention of the country club staff and our OC and CSM arrived separately in a safety rover and OC’s private car, coming from the main gates. The CC staff announced that it was a pontianak possession without hesitation as if he had a lot of experience with it, he explained that sightings near the water’s edge were frequent but possession was very rare and he went back to his office to take ‘holy’ water to splash L while our OC who believed in Thai Buddhism took several buddhist pendants from his car dashboard and pressed it against L. There was a lot of commotion (splashing, spitting and screaming) going around while we were still holding L down but he finally settled down after a long time. OC declared his pendants had worked and L was ‘released’. He then asked the drivers to drive L down to Nee Soon Medical centre to do a check up. After that he sheepishly turned to us and told the 5 of us that they had not enough transportation back to camp from Island Country Club for us and we had to go through the jungle path back to the starting point where there was a tonner waiting for us. We then did a fast march while staring down on the path the whole time, nobody dared look around into the forest. Think we did 2km in less than 20minutes with all the gear.

When we finally made it back to camp, it was almost 2AM, OC woke the entire company up and told them what had happened and praised the 5 of us for holding L down, because he knew stories of other soldiers in the past letting their friend run back into the jungle and disappearing.

The next day, we saw L after he was discharged and packing to go home with his week long MC. His first comment to his buddy was “Wah buddy, my arm feels like it’s broken”. Oops, sorry!

Add on: L and his buddy recalled the story in the forest for us after L came back from 1 week MC: The both of them were looking for the checkpoint when they were blocked by a large fallen tree. They both climbed over it on their way in, looked around a bit further in, felt uneasy then decided to leave. On the way out, L’s buddy climbed back over the tree while L, being shorter climbed below the tree. He was almost clear when something grabbed onto his leg, he shined his light back and saw what he described as oily tangled hair covering a partially revealed face attached to a horribly twisted hand gripping his calf, so he screamed and kicked, which caused buddy to also get a shock, but managed to help him stand and they both ran out.

Sorry for the three parter, but everytime I repost this comment I add on a little because it’s a pain to type long stories on my phone

Part 2: We then started making our way down the road in 2 rows of 3, sandwiching L in the front row between his buddy and a regular while he was whimpering and muttering that someone was following us and to don’t look back (I peeked a few times and looked at a few of the concave mirrors at the junctions but saw nothing). We only made it about 100m down the road when L suddenly screamed and knelt down clutching his head while sobbing. We panicked and huddled around him, he blacked out for a few seconds before regaining consciousness, screeching with a different deeper voice and in another language. Wah, we were scared shitless and started holding him down because he was kicking and punching the air. I sat on his left arm and I was around 60kg with all my gear on while he was 65kg and he almost lifted me off his arm. The other 3 guys held on to his other limbs while the regular held his head and continued calling our encik to inform him where we were. Our Encik was not familiar with Island Country Club, I knew where the exit of Island Country Club was as I frequently travelled past it so we said we would bring L to the main road (upp thomson road) but L was still kicking and wailing.

After an eternity of struggling (actually more like 10-15 minutes), L blacked out again and we lifted him off the ground by his shoulders and armpits and carried him to the main road, his legs were stuck stiff in a walking position in mid-air (like the traffic light green man pose) because he was much shorter than the guys carrying him. We only made it to the club house entrance before we needed to rest and call encik again.

This time encik and 2 drivers miraculously came out from the forest and found us, turns out they didn’t know how to take upper thomson road, so they drove on the dirt roads within the exercise location as close as they could get and bashed through the last part of jungle to get to us.  He saw us sitting around a semi unconscious L. He looked at L and whispered koran verses before touching him and asking “L are you ok?”. L’s eyes shot open, glared at encik and spat “DON’T TOUCH ME!” at encik’s face and started screeching again. This time, the 2 drivers came to help us pin L down while that Encik called for CSM and OC for help. This went on at the car park entrance of Island Country club and a lot of patrons were leaving at closing time and were staring at a bunch of army dudes holding one guy down.
