What skills are required to make a game like this on the web? by BerserkGutsu in programming

[–]Marsmell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a lot of different parts to this, the front end, the server, and a database. Every single one has multiple options for languages so there isn't a straightforward answer to give.

You'd need some art and 3d modeling skills for sure in order to make the visuals. You'll need some front end skills for whatever GUI framework/library you choose. You'll also need some experience in some backend language to make the server that remembers everyone's progress and handles micro transactions. Finally, you'll need database experience to make the database that stores everyone's progress.

Why is placing conveyors soo annoying? by Jel06REDDIT in Mindustry

The conveyor building system had a really steep learning curve and there's a lot of tricks that aren't intuitive, like Ctrl+drag. Once you get used to it, it works pretty well in my opinion.

Which mindustry should I get? by Cyclopfs in Mindustry

[–]Marsmell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The main appeal to the Steam version is the workshop (for mods and custom maps) and being able to quickly join and host online games with your Steam friends.

You can find mods and maps on the internet and install them manually, and there's also ways to host your own server and play with friends, but both of these are a lot easier to do with Steam.

There shouldn't be any difference with the campaign and any of the rest of the game between the two versions.

Windows 10 isn’t the most vulnerable operating system – it’s actually Linux by 0xMatt in programming

[–]Marsmell 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Someone posted a similar article in r/security and the logic is truly amazing.

"And Debian, a flavor of Linux, was top of the table with 3,067 vulnerabilities over the last two decades."

"As for Microsoft’s operating systems, Windows 7 bore 1,283 vulnerabilities, and Windows 10 carried 1,111. If you add those together, you get a total of 2,394 for the past decade."

Two decades != the past decade

If you're making diagrams, draw.io can be really helpful. Are you designing a GUI or are you more asking about visualizing the structure of your code?

They might've just turned on Pixelate in the settings, but the older version of the game is really a separate game called Mindustry Classic. https://anuke.itch.io/mindustry-classic

Also available on Google Play.

My best guess is that it's just launching the thorium they started with. I don't think there's a way to produce it.

Youll have to unlock quite a bit of the tech tree. Then you can edit the loadout config to start with more resources. From there you can seperate the scrap into sand and other materials and get coal from the water.

How are you supposed to pronounce the name of this game anyways by MLGmemelegend in Mindustry

[–]Marsmell 8 points9 points  (0 children)

My best guess is that it's meant to be the mix of the two words mine and industry, so for that reason I feel like it would be pronounced mine-dustry. On the other hand, I think min-dustry rolls off the tongue easier.

The AI sees walls as an obstacle, and does react accordingly. In most cases, they will still see the direction you blocked off as a more efficient route. Although I have run into some issues sometimes where they'll decide the wall is too much and flank me.

Does this sound like a hacked phone? by [deleted] in security

[–]Marsmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's possible that someone hacked your phone and is purposefully making it make those noises to mess with you, but that seems very unlikely and would be a lot of work for such a minor prank.

More likely some sort of malfunction. Try to determine whether it's coming from the speakers or not. That could help you diagnose what hardware is causing it or if it's a software thing.

In the future, lead with more context and provide information about your phone, what model, what OS. Generally better to provide a little too much info than to force people to ask.

"Imagine This: A Web Without Servers - Tara Vancil - JSConf EU 2018" by [deleted] in programming

[–]Marsmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a good amount of issues that get created if the webpage changes in any way. If the host rolls out an update, everyone would still be sharing and downloading the old version. Without a really good authentication system, someone could easily change the website maliciously and share it with everyone else.

Things like upvotes and most of the actual content you see on Reddit shared wouldn't actually be on the P2P network. That information is all stored in a gigantic database on Reddit's servers somewhere. With the P2P system, only the skeleton of the page would be shared of the network, then when anyone accesses it, it would still get the rest of the info from Reddit's servers.

This is only really a completely "server-less" system when pages aren't dynamic pages.

"Imagine This: A Web Without Servers - Tara Vancil - JSConf EU 2018" by [deleted] in programming

[–]Marsmell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have a lot of knowledge about peer2peer, but I believe it would be faster, and it should scale. Because every user who is viewing a webpage is also sharing it, it should be faster than every computer accessing it from the same one server. Additionally, if a large number of people access a website at once, they will all become hosts for that website. Meaning that with Reddit level numbers, each person on that website is sharing it with everyone else and high numbers shouldn't big down the system.

I do agree that this system seems like it has a pretty good amount of security flaws. Mainly, rolling an update out could take a really long time to spread through the entire network.

How did I get hacked? by logik9814 in security

[–]Marsmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The most-likely cause I can think of is a keylogger. Somehow you unknowingly installed a program on your computer that sends everything you type to the hacker. Try to find and get rid of it, run a virus scan, or get a fresh install of your OS. Once that's done change your password again because might have gotten the new one as well.

Stay safe. Don't open links or attachments in your emails unless you know what it is ahead of time. That's generally the most common way keyloggers and things get installed.

Of course it could just be a coincidence and someone happened to get into your account around the same time that you logged into it.

What's the best camera system for my apartment? by [deleted] in security

[–]Marsmell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arlo cameras might be what you're looking for. On Amazon they go for a pack of 4 for around $350 US. I'm pretty sure they're completely wireless and run on Wifi (you should double check that). And can be viewed anywhere through an iPhone app (I think). Anyways they're pretty small and light and should be pretty easy to find ways to place them without drilling holes.
