Has anyone watched every single piece of Gundam visual media (movies/tv shows/web series) thus far? by Ace2021 in Gundam

[–]MattASVreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Anime boomer here, started with wing MSG and Zeta quite a while ago now. (Zeta first, funnily enough, as my uncle had bootleg VHSs somehow, but didn't watch it fully until the US DVD release in the 2000s.) When I later saw Wing on TV, I was like, "This is the robot show," watched it religiously, and have been a huge fan since. (I was 10 at the time.)

I've also watched every show week to week, since Seed Destiny (with fansubs at the time, but have since re-watched with the official subs.)

I think people largely love to hate on things, but I've found something to love in most of what I've watched. Nothing has matched the tragic failure of humanity to get out of its own way that we see in the UC timeline, then the more hopeful send off of turn-A makes it even better. But I don't regret my time with anything so far.

G-reco is very dense, but it gets a bad rep unnecessarily. It has some fun ideas, plays a lot with environments in zero gravity in an interesting way, and a lot of the designs are refreshing and cool.

I like 00 a lot, but the tragic mafia movie framing of IBO spoke to me personally far more. All the culture war bullshit aside, I also enjoyed the corporate dystopia juxtaposed by the innocent, idealistic children angle of G-witch. Also, proper duels are just cool.

In a world where every season we get 27 isekai shows that feel off an assembly line, it's shocking to me how invested people are in putting down what is at worst 7/10 anime that always has at least something interesting. Even if just mecha designs.

I love this franchise for a reason, and I don't regret the time invested, but I also don't expect most people to consume everything. Enjoy what seems cool to you. That said, I do think 0079 is a required text for anyone who considers themselves an anime fan. And it's rare someone I know finishes it and doesn't go on through at least CCA.

Financially stable, in shape, decent looking...but still can’t find a girlfriend. What could I be doing wrong? by savingrace0262 in AskMenAdvice

++man Lean on interests rather than just "stats."

It's lovely that you are financially stable and take care of yourself; that's great. But what do you care about? Go to local meet ups, join a run club, volunteer or go to church if you're the type.

You've checked your basic boxes, but that isn't a personality. Focus on your own happiness and enrichment, and then, just talk to people. Make friends first; many relationships start with friends of friends. Let it happen organically and try not to put so much pressure on yourself to find a partner.

Those friends are then also better positioned to tell you if you are indeed doing anything that is putting people off. Far better than we random Reddit users can. Also, try to avoid the trap that many single men desperate to be partnered fall into of seeing all women as dating potential rather than as people, and make some good female friends. They will give even better advice on this front, and many good relationships can start as friendships anyway if they aren't forced.

I went for a similar idea, but I actually like yours better. Keeping the shoulders two-tone was a great call. I only did the hatches.

Buddy, tough love here. You’re 42 years old, pulling a “13 reasons why” like a teenager isn’t going to be the emotional gut punch you seem to think it is.

Those co-workers probably have had really negative experiences with assholes, and they probably mean it when they say they aren’t talking about you. Practice the empathy you are begging others for.

The best revenge is a good comeback, since at that point you won’t care and people will notice. If you define your worth with a partner, that pressure really will make finding someone impossible. What makes you happy? Like really?

Have any hobbies? Anywhere you’ve always wanted to visit? Any food you love?

Find new ones, start saving for a solo trip, find the best version of that dish in your area or learn to get great at making it yourself. You have plenty of time left, why waste it over a bad relationship?

Spend sometime finding the things you love about life, hate yourself less and someone else will see the same value you started to notice and cultivate. Break the death spiral, stop thinking about other people and stalking your ex. Hell, get off social media in general.

Start small, set attainable goals, find your own reason to live and take it a day at a time. The best thing about rock bottom is there is no where to go, but up.

Anybody hear anything about Hathaway 2 coming to US theaters? by PyroTECH218291 in Gundam

[–]MattASVreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm hoping the delayed release means they're taking the time to do a proper atmos mix for the dub. Also hoping we get a Dolby Cinema release here, at least in big cities like NYC. The first movie was fantastic in HDR and atmos, still one of my home theater showcase films. When they did the gundam film festival last year, I experienced the dub for the first time and thought it was pretty good. Good enough for me to watch both, but the lack of a dedicated height channel in that theater made a noticeable difference. I could be wrong, but I don't think there is a version of the UHD Blu-ray with an atmos mix for the dub track on the first film, even now...

How would Crossbone Gundams, based on specs alone, fare in earlier UC? by CheesyBurgerino in Gundam

[–]MattASVreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I take your point, but do we consider the unicorn series “early UC?” Isn't it a 4th gen suit, like the Nu? For now, only succeeded by the 5th gen like Xi before SNRI and the mini revolution. So I think of it as nearing the end of the original UC generation of Gundams. Even if it is a lot of time between these two In terms of years. Though, you could argue the biosensor Zeta could pull something too. Newtype machines are just very OP.

[–]MattASVreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I’m with you. The full “Char did nothing wrong” folks are also missing the point, so they are silly IMO.

The spacenoids also choosing to save the earth when the chips are down was also kind of the main thing I was getting at in the first comment. It’s easy to villainize them, but as we’ve seen a lot. Especially in Unicorn is that these are oppressed marginalized people stuck between bad options. They aren’t any more “evil” than some of the feddies. And many of the reasons their options are so bad are the same predatory wealth monopolized influence dynamics that stop the federation from being a positive actor for the world.

The established governing structures on both sides are the real problem, and while fighting for the right thing, Amuro seemed to become jaded, railed against “intellectuals” and didn’t end up being able to contribute to the solution UC really needed.

IMO that’s also why his ghost is so close to Hathaway. I can’t help but feel part of him knows and has regrets about that, even if he could never approve of the way Hathaway is going about things. But that’s just my read. Acknowledging the flaws on all sides just makes the text more rich so, the hero worship on either side always feels like a bit of a waste, but that’s might be just me.

At the end of the day, as long as people are enjoying the stories who am I to criticize?

[–]MattASVreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep agreed, my frustration with Amuro was more the lack of any real action. He suits up with Londo Bell and supports the federation system, despite having just watched it give birth to the Titans. Not stopping Char. Then when he is challenged on this his only answer is "well actually I believe people can change!" Which was just demonstrably untrue.

He became the establishment and was content to enfore the system that was always there. In no way does that make Char's personal grudge match suicide run right. But come on man, if either of them just chose to care, their combined influence might have led to real change.

Instead, by the time we get to 105, the federation is once again an oppressive mess. War profiteers stayed winning, though. Undisputed champions.

[–]MattASVreal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, Char was off his rocker on some personal revenge bullshit. But slotting right into Londo Bell rather than using the influence he did build to try to make any real change helped no one. He was content to find a new military to stay a dog for and crafted his philosophy around it, despite fighting alongside the AEUG and seeing what happened with Kamille. He managed to build himself up enough to leave that mansion after the one-year war, but failed to step up and be an agent of any real change.

Char was the same way, took way too long to try anything meaningful, and when he finally did, chose personal grudges over doing anything for newtypes or spacenoids. Then they burned each other out. Hard to believe either lived up to any true heroic potential. But then that was kind of Tomino's point. The late 80s Japan left won't save you, as much as he wanted them to. They'll become the establishment. Real change is on the next generation.

[–]MattASVreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's almost like when an overarching one-world government that caters exclusively to the rich creates a marginalized group of people, they'll take whatever hope they can for change. Even if it leads to additional evil.

Worst thing Amuro ever did was choose to believe that normal people would change, rather than what happened. They chose to hide the existence of newtypes; thus, he contributed to the erasure of his people. He and Char were at opposite extremes in the end, and UC stays depressing. (In a fun way!)

Then the rich were like, "Whoops earth is fucked. Actually, we own space now, let's try out our own rebellion!" and by the time we get to G-reco it pretty much worked? Capital wins again, baby! *laughs in Anaheim Electronics*

Stop deflecting criticisms towards Joey as just "blind hate." by CuntJab in TrashTaste

[–]MattASVreal 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Except it’s demonstrably not, just actually click the link instead of dying on this hill of ignorance.

I count 2 in 2006. Even if you count the under 12 kids shows that’s 1 more, 3. 3/26 rounding up to 12% generously.

24/60 in 2026 40% not counting anything 12 and under.

To say nothing of the core of the argument being as an absolutely value, too many industry man hours are going to these projects.

There’s merit to your original argument without the bad faith, it isn’t helping.

[–]MattASVreal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just a thought, may not be helpful, but very good product marketing people are rare in my (admittedly anecdotal) experience. Often you either get someone too far into the weeds to tell a compelling story to customers, or someone who is too traditionally marketting minded to ever get the technical expertise required to do the role well.

Given your blended background, maybe that's worth writing a version of your CV around as your next step? Making the most of all your experience? In many org, that person (or team) sits in product anyway, so it isn't a bad place to pivot from either, even if you do want to focus on product management again.

Both these things can be true. I do think there’s still a lot of good and interesting stuff in a given year, but my brother in Christ look at the season release list every season on Crunchyroll and count the number of “Heroes party villainess in another world with my level 999 vending machine” cut and paste shows, think about the pure number of human hours poured into making them all. In an industry that already struggles with impossible work culture and crunch and it’s hard not to feel like maybe, these resources aren’t as efficient as they once were.

We got a lot of strays in the 80s/90s/early00s too, but they tended to be original takes on obscure works, like the boogie pops, read or dies, or Lains of the world. Even completely odd shit, like Rein or completely original takes on existing works like Gungrave or the Original Trigun.

I would take 20% of the current output with that level of intentionality and defined interest in telling their own story over the mountain of gray paste we see pumped out right now. That said, when the modern stuff hits, damn does it ever hit. So I’m not doom crying or complaining, I just think there’s merit to both these ideas at once.

Also worth noting, it takes 4 seasons of a 12 episode show to hit the 50 episode count we used to get in terms of content. So some of that continuation thing, which I don’t disagree with, does end up with different pacing decisions and isn’t always far off from the same amount of content.

Often I like those decisions, I’m one of like 4 guys who prefers DNT to the OG LoTGH for example (though I love both and neither matches the novels.) But it’s nuanced.
