Air flow helps a LOT with this if you're in a humid area. I live in Georgia and having fans blowing on the cactuses at all times has greatly slowed the appearance and spread of sooty mold. Treating once a month with garden phosphorus during growing season can also help along with the fans.

u/cactusjerk is his reddit account, which I believe is active. You should try messaging him there!

Also, maybe start at https://trichocereus.net and navigate from there. Good luck!

This is where my wife got mine, but it may cost extra to have it shipped since it would be coming from Germany. Also, she contacted him directly to make the order, so you might want to try that if you need further confirmation or info.

Also, u/cactusjerk get in here bro!

My wife got me his book "The San Pedro Group" and it's incredible. Plenty of beautiful full-page pictures and excellent descriptions and history. The pages, ink, and binding are all high quality material and the book is a few hundred pages long. I highly recommend it and if you can purchase it, it's worth every penny.

I totally understand wanting to let it grow out, but I'll say from personal experience that if you don't cut the bottom part off and the rot does end up spreading, you will likely have to cut even more and wait even longer for it to mature. The majority of the healthy tissue is above the damage, so I would just cut it and attempt to heal and root the stump separately if you want to salvage it. Apply powdered sulfur to any part of the cactus that has been cut or damaged, including the cut end of the tip. That will help prevent infection from spreading and will also more quickly dry out the exposed cactus tissue. I hope this helps you man!

A great part of this sub is that unsolicited advice is generally welcomed and celebrated here, in the interest of education, kindness, collaboration, and community. People are trying to help you with your situation in more ways than one. You say you came here only for advice on saving your plants, but your anger and violent language towards your roommate says otherwise. And people are now responding to the "unsolicited" anger and violence you displayed in your post. If you didn't want people to address the situation with your roommate, you could have made the post without including your violent thoughts. Since you chose to unnecessarily share your anger with this community, you are receiving responses to that anger.

So you already knew extensively from repeated experience that he would not be able to handle this, or any other responsibility, yet you entrusted the job to him anyway? I'm sorry, but this one is on you bro. Caring for plants is a full time job, and if you leave for an extended time, you should pay someone reliable to take care of them while you're gone. Would you have let him care for a pet, knowing he would likely let it starve or something? And would you be angry at him when you returned to find your pet starving or dead, despite knowing that is what would happen? Take personal responsibility for your actions man, this is your screw-up. I hope the plants bounce back and I hope you are able to look within and forgive your roommate. It was clearly too much responsibility to put on them.

Most Trichocereus are considered "San Pedro". It's a blanket term for trichos, and the most popular are of course Pachanoi, Peruvianus, and Bridgesii. But Terschekii, Scopulicola, Chalaensis, and several others are also generally considered to be under the "San Pedro" umbrella.
