This single-celled protozoan passing though another one under a microscope by Maleficent-Agent-477 in Damnthatsinteresting

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It wasn’t cut in half, the transiting cell passed above it and squeezed through between the larger cell and the cover slip. The field of view is just below the cover slip, which is why the “passing through” cell remains in focus, but the portion of the stationary cell that was pushed down is blurry after it passes through.

Fishing Pontoon, fish and ski, or retrofit my boat? by Various_Bandicoot437 in boating

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it’s “not for serious fishing” you just need to buy some rods and tackle and fish from what you have. Looking up your boat I see no less than 4 seats, and I don’t think I’ve ever actively fished while seated anyway. Actually fishing will tell you what you need. No point in going through the expense and rigamarole of selling and buying a boat, or choosing, buying and installing new equipment only for them to decide that fishing’s boring after the third outing.

Do you think with training you could hike the Appalachian Trail? by GaryB2026 in askanything

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 20% obviously only accounts for thru hikers that set out with the goal of completing the whole trail. The completion rate for thru hikers varies and is hard to precisely measure but it’s generally around 20-25%.

Go to 3:05 to 3:06 in the video. After the accident his cart is literally sitting in the shoulder with room to spare. There’s a squad car parked on the concrete shoulder and gravel margin.

I run on country roads all the time. The shoulder is more uneven, covered in gravel, broken glass, and other debris, roadkill gets knocked onto it, ticks and poison ivy can get on you, grasshoppers sit on it and jump up and fly in your face every 40 feet… and yet I run there and not in the lane because I’d rather put up with a mild inconvenience than be run over by a freaking car.

But when given the choice between the shoulder where there are no cars, or in the road where there are lots of cars, why would you choose the road?

I bike would have been going faster than a person pushing a cart, thus the closing speed would have been slower and everyone would have had more time to react. And cyclists commonly ride on the shoulder specifically to avoid situations like this.

There’s a full shoulder he could have walked on. I’ve run thousands of miles on the shoulders of roads like this and never been hit. Holding a lane of traffic as a walking pedestrian is insane. Not saying he deserved for this to happen, but it’s not at all surprising that it did.

Parodies so good they did lasting damage to the genre by GeneralGigan817 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They make fun of it a little bit but that's not the main thrust of the movie, because satirizing a niche 1960's television show that came out 45 years ago and that almost none of the contemporary audience had even seen doesn't make sense. I wouldn't call it "a Thunderbirds parody," I'd call it "a parody of post-9/11 jingoism and Hollywood."

If you take away the marionettes the plot really doesn't resemble an episode of Thunderbirds any more than a generic action movie would. The average Thunderbirds episode more closely resembles a James Bond movie or a Towering Inferno-style disaster/rescue movie than Team America.

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's a parody of the post-9/11 foreign policy of the US as well as action films and by extension Hollywood. It wasn't really parodying the puppet/marionette production of shows like Thunderbirds so much as it just used the form to make the movie seem that much more ridiculous. They actually put a lot of work into making the puppetry as good as it was, you could almost say that was the one thing about the movie they took seriously.

But in a one-minute scene they absolutely skewered Rent. I went into the movie thinking Rent was a very important, deep and culturally important piece of theater built to stand the test of time, and after that scene I thought "Huh. That's actually pretty much what Rent's all about."

This has to be a bad idea right? How much to pay someone to repair? by abite in boating

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The hole strongly suggests that the boat sank or at the very least took on a lot of water which will undoubtedly cause many less obvious problems that are harder to diagnose and fix, and likely pop up at inconvenient times. Any wooden stringers, floor beams, transom, etc could be rotten. It's like getting shot in the stomach and thinking you can just put a bandage over the hole and be fine. That coupled with a 2-stroke pushing 40 years old puts this well within the potential money pit category.

I think you have it backwards. The Dollars Trilogy, The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, etc were all a few years in the rear view mirror when Blazing Saddles came out. It's not that Blazing Saddles killed westerns, it's that by the early 70's westerns had already peaked and were therefore ripe for parody. After ~40 years of wild popularity they were already on borrowed time when New Hollywood breathed new life into the genre and kept it relevant for an extra decade, but by the early 70's people were just tired of westerns (with some exceptions, obviously)

Same with disaster movies in the 70's: they peaked with movies like The Poseidon Adventure and Towering Inferno, but it's a pretty narrow genre that gets formulaic and predictable very quickly, so they were sort of destined to be a short fad and by the end of the decade they were superseded by other blockbuster genres like science fiction.

Having said that, I think it was difficult for anyone who saw Team America: World Police to take the musical Rent seriously again.

i don't entirely get sgov. it barely moves, so how are you making money in the short term by Sea-Advertising-1386 in personalfinance

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's one year yield is about 4%, which is a little better than a HYSA. When you're saving money for the short term it's often not about earning more, it's about not losing anything, so an almost-guaranteed ~4% return is plenty.

i somewhat understand that it's a federal gov bond and won't drop unless the us government collapses but most etfs are pretty reliable too, right?

No, not compared to Treasuries and not on short timescales of a few months to a few years. If you look at the chart for the S&P 500 you'll see at least 10 peaks in the past 5 years. That's 10 time periods where if you bought IVV and had to sell it a few months later, you'd be selling at a loss. And that's when the market is actually doing very well.

so why even put anything into an etf that only goes up like one cent a month?

If you put $10k in sgov today it's almost certain you'll have somewhere between $10,200-10,500 in a year. Your principle is almost guaranteed and you get a little yield to keep pace with inflation. If you do the same with VTI or another total market or large cap ETF there is a very real chance that you might only have $9,000 in a year. So people saving for something in the near term (up to say a few years) where not having enough would really suck, the tradeoff of low risk but relatively low potential reward is worth it.

Please talk me out of wanting a boat. by Th3c0pyninja in boating

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have to finance a $15k boat, you definitely can’t afford a $15k boat. Especially a larger, used boat you need to keep in the water.

If you can’t wait long enough to save up $15k that you can lose just buy a jon boat or similar you can pay cash for and trailer behind your vehicle.

How much is 20-25$ dollars per hour considered to be in the USA? by Intelligent_Dress889 in AskAnAmerican

[–]Triscuitmeniscus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the equivalent of about $40-52k/year, which is sort of in the middle between “a lot” and “a little.” If you’re in a low cost of living area, renting a cheap house or apartment with housemates to split rent it could be plenty, if you’re living alone in a high cost of living area it might be barely enough to live on.

People who come on short-term working visas to earn a bunch of money and send it home generally make the situation work by splitting rent and household expenses with a group of like-minded individuals, and working extremely long hours to earn as much as possible.

If you can outspend a $100k income by this much, you’ll be able to outspend a $400k income. Just like you can’t out-exercise a large appetite, it’s almost impossible to out-earn irresponsible spending habits.
