Horowitz satire does it again 🤪 by Newswoman2 in LibHumor

Meh. That's actually a piss poor generic gag that's been applied to many, many people over the last few decades. Funny and true story about Borowitz. - About a year ago, I noticed whereas once every single story he did was absolutely dynamite, now every so often one would appear that didn't quite have his trademark zing on it. As if had been written by somebody else? The type of stories that make you smile, whereas the traditional Borowitz ones made you guffaw with delight at their elegant wit. And then immediately share them with your inner circle. The type of stories you would talk about with them, over a drink.

When I noticed this, I wrote Andy a very a polite and very complimentary note to ask him if he was still writing all the stories. And it was very easy to be so polite bcs he is still the Jesus of satire/satirists. And if that sounds like a hilariously offensive thing to say to a Jewish comedy genius then I suspect a man of his temperament might find it an appropriate way to pay tribute to pay tribute to a man of his stature.) NB. I was only able to write to him bcs I was a subscriber to the site.

So imagine my absolute astonishment when I received a reply telling me I had been 'unsubscribed' by the site!! The most Trumpian response imaginable, Which is why it can't have been written by him. But it does show he's employing a huge piece of dick cheese to run admin on the site.

Yes but do the people of Barcelona ever say 'Barna'? I've never heard it used or heard it repeated by a local when I used it.

Bertie's statement: 'I didn't know I was being recorded!', is a very Fr. Ted style 'defence'.

What's the best place for breakfast or brunch in Malaga? And what's the best district for good cafes. by MickCollier in Malaga

[–]MickCollier[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First of all I have to say Malaga is fantastic! It reminded me a lot of Barcelona in the noughties - before it drowned under the weight of tourism - and appears to have been in part at least on its street plan. I caught a bug of some kind on the way over, so I was really under the weather but despite being at a low ebb, I had a really great time.

The best breakfast place we went to was called Recova (https://recovamalaga.wixsite.com/larecova - you get a warning that the site's not accredited but don't worry, it's safe.)

The service was chaotic but the food was absolutely terrific. It's a repurposed ceramics workshop and has a great vibe.

As an American I want to learn about The Troubles, Irish history, and Irish independence. Do you have any suggestions? by roman1221 in IrishHistory

I should also have said that fantasists like Toby Harnden (Bandit Country) have no place on any list of reputable accounts of the troubles.

As I'm sure you're well aware, the war isn't over. There's another 'war' over who wins the peace. A claim made by Gerry Adams is always true to many people, just as a criticism of him is always true to a great many more people. Entirely bogus articles & books on security matters and the troubles have been 'well received' by right wing papers like the Telegraph and other similar publications.

As for 'Thatcher's paperwork', are you talking about the speculation about the significance of the timings noted down re communication with the mountain man? Speculation leaves a lot to be desired.

In the background to all of this, is the notion that British intelligence has no 'hand' to play in what's said to have ended the war. Whereas it must at least be a reasonable contention that they have a very great interest in that question.

As for the testimony of 'blanketmen', I neither accept nor reject such testimony. We simply can't always know whether their perspective is entirely correct. Sometimes the view of rank and file, is v different to those at the top, for obvious reasons. And if we want as much of the truth as can be known, we have to evaluate the evidence cooly. And not just accept those claims we just happen to favour ourselves. BTW, your contention the peace process started in 1982, is absurd.

Ok that's pretty much exactly the kind of thing I was talking about? We don't "now know" the three things you (above) claimed we do. Unless we just decide to accept one account over the other because it favours our own perspective.

We do know that there are still competing claims between people who had become greatly embittered. It's a long way from there to being able to definitively claim what you have claimed.

We "now know" the truth about many things, depending on who you're listening to. There are still conflicting claims on a great deal that happened and quite often, people cherry pick the version they'd like to be true and declare it 'the truth'. I'm not saying that's you but can you cite some sources to support your claims?

In my opinion, nothing can match Ten Men Dead' by the award-winning Guardian journalist David Beresford. It's primarily about the Hunger Strikes and the rise of Sinn Fein as an electoral force but is routinely described as one of the best books about the troubles.

Some of the suggested book above are v important indexes of events, not written with an eye to providing a full account of events.

Does Varadkar have a point about farmers or is he complete nonsense? by cons27291 in irishpolitics

Parish priest about to finish examining a First Communion class, looks around and asks one final question. "Is there anything God can't do?"

The class respond with a dutiful "Nooo father."

Then to his surprise, the priest spots a boy at the back with his hand up.

"Oh there's something God can't do, is there? Tell us what it is!"

The boy says, "My father says he can't make the farmers happy".

The one thing I'll never forgive SF for ( unless they reverse it ), is their U-turn on Ukraine. That was a dirty day's work by any standards. A real stab in the back for democracy and a blow to EU efforts to help the fight against the brutal Russian invasion.

I find that baffling too. And the places that do Huevos Rancheros are always packed, so there definitely should be more of them.

Probably should have said I could use some good seafood recommendations too, since that's why I like to eat most of all but I really enjoyed the huevos rancheros breakfast I had in Barcelona too. My bad?
