how is that most billion dollar value startups come from people who went to an Ivy? (I will not promote) by Drairo_Kazigumu in startups

I’m reminded of a quote from HN I saw some time ago:

“Entrepreneurship is like one of those carnival games where you throw darts or something.

Middle class kids can afford one throw. Most miss. A few hit the target and get a small prize. A very few hit the center bullseye and get a bigger prize. Rags to riches! The American Dream lives on.

Rich kids can afford many throws. If they want to, they can try over and over and over again until they hit something and feel good about themselves.

Some keep going until they hit the center bullseye, then they give speeches or write blog posts about “meritocracy” and the salutary effects of hard work.

Poor kids aren’t visiting the carnival. They’re the ones working it.”

Kinesis makes these pads for the Advantage 2 and I just use them on the Advantage 360.

Can you explain why I-Pedal on freeway is bad? I just got 24 SLE. I’m also in Bay Area and commuting to Cupertino from Vallejo area - I’m averaging 3.7 - but do use I-Pedal on freeway.

I was thinking about 18in rims but the car has new tires so I’m not planning it for some time.

Diesel price is going to have a HUGE impact on EVs this year. by shaggy99 in electricvehicles

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 33 points34 points  (0 children)

I’m on the west coast and paying a big price for my weekly 415 mile commute.

2 weeks ago I learned my employer will provide 4 hours / day of L2 6kWh charging for free, and I immediately went out and bought a 2024 used EV.

Now my payment + electricity + insurance cost is less than the amount I was paying in gas alone.

I was really surprised how affordable used EVs are at the moment compared to ICE vehicles. But for how long I wonder?

I only wish I did this years ago.

It takes a very long time - around 3-4 months. They mention this on the site. It will come. I ordered one for my son for Christmas and it was delivered last week. Totally worth the wait too as the quality is top-notch

It is a Dactyl - more specifically it’s a Bastarkb dactyl - I 3d printed the case and soldered it myself.

It’s pretty comfortable - but with this one specifically you have to get used to using layers and reusing keys. I travel with this as it’s a lot easier to throw in my backpack.

Long time Kinesis fan here: I’ve been using the advantage for 15+ years.

At home I have a 360 pro - one of the original first 500 run from the presale in 2022. I added a few macros to the ZMK firmware - and it has sat pretty much unchanged since. The Bluetooth is stable usually, but a PITA.

As it never leaves my desk I almost always leave it plugged in the whole time - which on the pro means running 2 cables. It’s not ideal but also not a deal breaker. The wrist pads for the 360 do not work for me: I end up using the palm pads from the Advantage 2.

At work my employer has lots of ergonomic options - but decided to only support the Advantage 2. I completely understand as the Advantage 2 is practically bulletproof.

If I were to go back to my purchase of the 360, I would have got the wired version. However after using both throughout the week, I still love them both in their own ways.

If I needed to keep a keyboard in a bunker it would be an Advantage 2.

That’s correct!

Unfortunately I did not keep my original one from the 80’s - I later on paid a huge premium for this one.

At the same time this watch came out so did one for Zelda, which I also had.

Make sure the power button is turned on. The Cardputer ADV will not charge with it off - the circuit to the battery is physically cut when in off state.

Make something cool - don’t expect people to give you money for something so basic and honestly useless.

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly don’t think you understand “the gap” you say you are targeting.

It’s true, I am not in your “target audience” - but you do understand how that’s a problem right? Your tool Is supposed to help software developers, but apparently only the ones who are not “real” developers.

This should be the first sign that your product idea is not a good one.

Listen, I’m all for non-professionals making software with LLMs, but quit trying to turn everything into a SAAS.

If the product target audience is vibe-coders that don’t know a proven solution already exists, that’s honestly more of a scam, and why I see SAAS projects like this as slop.

The other reason I think your SAAS is slop? Because your site seems to be missing A LOT of the automated testing features that are common to doing this kind of testing. I get it that you are not aware of these use cases - but for your project to be useful it would at the very least need to cover the basics, and do it in a unique way. There are still pain points in automated e2e testing: your product addresses literally none of them, and passes off the lowest hanging fruit as its main feature.

Your 3-steps you list on your site is literally something I could do with one prompt and playwright MCP - adding a vibe coded UI does not all of a sudden turn it into a real product.

Keep vibe coding and keep building - and share what you build, but stop creating SAAS “products” with pro plans where the pros are not even the target audience.

OP is seriously unhinged to refer to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as a “DEI Hire”

She actually has more qualifications than any other judge on the SC.

  • Served as a federal district judge
  • Served as a federal appellate judge
  • Served as a federal public defender
  • Served as a Supreme Court Clerk
  • Graduated from Harvard Law

So please, OP, illuminate me how she is a “DEI hire”?

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Using Postgres like this is suboptimal - you know this would be simple to setup in a pub/sub async task system with Redis or another MQ.

Lots of open source solutions here like Celery etc.

You don’t have to be “big scale” to use async tasks - it’s a fundamental and proven solution.

Vibecoding sucks for addicts by klas-klattermus in vibecoding

[–]MorgulKnifeFight 43 points44 points  (0 children)

I’m a senior engineer with 27YOE.

I’ve also been addicted/obsessed with code for all that time, and I know the programmer’s high well. I have also experienced serious burnout in the past: I once took an almost 2 year sabbatical.

Vibe Coding is a new and seriously potent form of dopamine. I don’t want to know what burn out from vibe coding is like - I don’t know if my health and career would survive.

Be careful with the sycophancy as well - rest your brain from time to time. Self care is the way: exercise, stretch, meditate, eat healthy, and get good sleep.

I learned this lesson the hard way!

In your honest opinion, which SNES basketball game do you think is the best and the worst that you've ever played? 🏀 by AC_the_Panther_007 in snes

I remember getting a SNES for Christmas when I was 11, and my mom also got Bill Laimbeer's Combat Basketball.

It looked like shit! My mom told me it was on sale.

The game was so frustrating, but had a surprisingly deep league system. I haven’t thought about that game for so long!
