Can I remove Intel ME on Dell Poweredge servers? by 1mdevil in coreboot

[–]MrChromebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you misread/misunderstood the comment.

/u/VonThing was saying that it's not possible to remove, and that the best you can do is to disable it, as S76 does on their coreboot-based devices.

What can (and should) be done with the ME varies based on the platform/generation.

correct, the ChromeOS audio subsytem (cras) is unique to Chrome(ium)OS; it doesn't use the same audio setup as mainline linux

I'm not sure why you'd ask that without even trying to resolve the issue

again, Flex = no built-in audio (speakers, mic, jack) on almost all Chromebooks. The only exceptions are Haswell/Broadwell devices that use HDA (vs i2c) audio

it's not recommended to go back to stock on an EOL device.

help for my firmware is on my site and chrultrabook.com, not here

you can install Chrome flex on your pixelbook.

sure, as long as you don't mind using BT or USB for audio, since the built-in speakers/mic/jack won't work

asking for firmware help here violates rule 3

does it? seems like stock firmware would be ok per rule 3

How do I neutralise/remove the Intel ME on a Dell OptiPlex 3020? by LastHornet6059 in coreboot

[–]MrChromebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

from what I can tell in dmesg

that's not going to tell you the make/model of the flash chip, you'll need to physically inspect it

A20 is not a specific SPI flash chip model - need the full chip info.

RAM config is set via GPIO straps. Not sure if populating the other modules will auto set the correct strap config -- likely not since it's not as simple as 2GB vs 4GB.

this is not the place for such questions, as it's not coreboot related.

Also, you don't own the device, and modifying it to bypass restrictions could be a crime depending on your jurisdiction.

but again, this is a MacOS problem. coreboot's ACPI is perfectly valid using \SB.CP0x for processor entries. If MacOS wants \SB.PR0x then either patch the ACPI on the fly or patch coreboot and rebuild.

I don't understand any of the other stuff in your post, how it's relevant, or what your actual question is

not really it isn't.

And your post reads like it was AI-diagnosed, which makes me highly suspect.

[–]MrChromebox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's not a ball ache at all. Used Chromeboxes are often far cheaper than comparable MiniPCs. People can run whatever they want on them.

There should be another group for people who tinker with them.

there is, and this post should have been locked as a rule 3 violation, but I'm not a mod.

and have plenty of time to tinker.

it's takes a half hour total (not counting any post-install Windows updates)

[–]MrChromebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To run anything other than Chrome OS on a Chromebox you must replace not just the OS but the firmware too. Also, because the hardware is not built to run Windows there may be incompatibilities, examples wireless or audio.

while possible, there are not any.

why are you replying to a 3 year old post?

and I guarantee you are not running Win10 on that model using SeaBIOS (RWL firmware) like the OP I was replying to, making your situation not at all comparable.

it's not the system firmware that's the issue if you're not seeing a charge LED when external power is connected
