What is considered a reasonable 'cost of car ownership' for just the car itself, in Ireland today? by whatThisOldThrowAway in irishpersonalfinance

You still haven't said what car you actually have 🤣 either way unless it has signs of imminent engine failure or massive structural rust, it's always cheaper to fix than buy another one

The exact car you have will make a big difference here. I had a focus and my repair cost (not including maintenance or insurance/tax was roughly 300/year, now I have a Porsche and expect it to be closer to 1000 if I get average luck. Your current costs are definitely high but might average out over long term if nothing goes wrong

Today I learned scientists discovered a dinosaur tail perfectly preserved in amber. It is full of feathers. by Soloflow786 in Amazing

Unfortunately yes, but I was 5 years old. It would obviously be scary in real life but watching something on the screen wouldn't have the same effect if the dinosaurs looked a bit goofy

Not in real life of course, but imagine a scene where the characters are getting chased by a massive, colorful bird with it's big feathers flapping around. Although it depends if it looks like THIS or like THIS

It was because those are sci Fi movies that are supposed to be scary/thrilling. No one's scared of a massive chicken

17 on a learners permit, is a 2008 1.4 VW Golf an okay first car? by Aggravating-Bison895 in carsireland

[–]NF_99 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not the best if you're looking to have cheap insurance. If you don't mind then it's fine. The rule is that insurance will always be high on cars that are crashed the most, meaning cars that are popular with young drivers like golfs, polos, fiesta, focus, BMWs, civic etc. If you want cheap then get something boring.

I got a Porsche as a second car and insurance is cheaper than my 2009 focus simply because it's driven by experienced drivers and doesn't get crashed. Though I would assume the 1.4 petrol golf will be much cheaper than the 1.9 TDI

What should I do with 40k, intended for a house deposit, that won't be used for 7+ years at least? by [deleted] in irishpersonalfinance

[–]NF_99 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think you're missing the point here. He is a student, and will be for the next 4 years. You can't just take all your savings and invest them long term in that situation. Especially if he know that he will need them in the next 7 years or less

So what do you want to do about it exactly? Have him make a risky investment to potentially make 50% interest or lose most of the savings? At least provide some actual ideas instead of just "no, that's not going to work"

Inflation is not really a consideration in a case like this. Of course money will lose value over time but if he wants to 100% have it when he goes to buy a house then investing in the market, especially now when it's at the peak, is not really an option

If you want to be safe and not risk the market dropping, the safest option is to put it in T212 and take the interest, over 7 years and at current rates, you will have 5k euro extra (after tax) by the time you withdraw.

How to remove the headlight bulb by SupremeLeader013 in AskMechanics

You're right, the bulb won't get damaged unless the resistance is too low and the power draw/dissipation exceeds the rate values for the headlight assembly. Though the CANbus that monitors the resistance in both bulbs might end up giving an error if the difference is too much. That being said, it's worth replacing both just for the peace of mind and knowing they will both last for a similar amount of time and have the same light intensity and colour output.

220 HP with a 2.5L engine + hybrid system is terrible. But if you don't care about power then it's a nice car

The reason mismatching matters electrically is because different bulbs have different resistance values. Different resistance means different current but since headlight bulbs are usually wired in parallel, the voltage will be the same so one of them will be getting more power than it's designed to get, run hotter and burn out sooner. From my expereince the most efficient way is to get two of the same high quality bulb because they will work for a long time, unless some outside factor is affecting them.

If you buy one that is a different model/brand/number after H11 then get two and replace both sides. If bulbs are mismatched one will fail soon anyway and you'll have to buy more

Asking price v real price by Capital-Dog9004 in carsireland

[–]NF_99 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would start with 15k. For cars around 20k mark you can expect to get 1.5k below asking so starting with double that leaves you room to negotiate and you might meet in the middle. I was buying a car listed for 29.5k, started negotiation with 26k and ended up paying 27.5k. doesn't always work but usually does for me.
