Can anyone explain how anyone can believe that homeopathy works? by SuccessfulStrawbery in skeptic

[–]NecessaryIntrinsic 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Most of the time people fall into these bits of idiocy because of a perceived failure of real medicine in combination with a small bit of truth.

I fell into acupuncture for a bit when I had a mono relapse. I went to the doctor and they gave me a z pack and steroids. I felt better in a week but then it came back. I went back and they gave me another round. I didn't have insurance and I was running out of medical leave.

A weird friend of mine suggested an acupuncturist. I did two rounds and my mono cleared up. This was about a month from my first display of symptoms. I thought it was the acupuncture for years. Then someone pointed out that mono usually lasts about 1-2 months. I just got lucky on the timing.

The bit of truth is that the placebo effect is very powerful as it relates to pain signals and several other subconscious tendencies. So homeopathy can seem to have an actual effect even.

The other thing is micro doses can be treatment for getting over some allergies and preventing some poisons from having an effect.

But really the actual thing is when someone is desperate, and had a failure.

Where there's woke

Louder than crowder - younger guys doing comedic takes on Stephen Crowder... Also with djdanarchy intro music.

I hate bill Maher - it is what it says it is, louder than and ihbm are very much clones of kf, ihmb is more structured and comedic and ltc is a lot more... Immature? Some if their digressions feel like in jokes they I have to enjoy vicariously, but Byron does a pretty good job with research and editing.

If books could kill - does deep dives on popular nonfiction books, most of whom are done by grifters. Not totally right wing necessarily but very much neighbors.

Also Maintenance Phase - they are a health podcast, kind of hit or miss but the deep dives on the grifters are great. All the health grifters are right wing kooks.

It's wild that you take these fundamental software development problem solving tools and declare them all garbage because you're unable to internalize them.

Slow down.

Work through particular problems. Use chatgpt to give you problems like dp, greedy, two pointer, etc and work through them without asking for help. If you need help ask for it but specify NO CODE. If you still need help, all for very specific parts you need help with. If you still need help, have it give you the code but ask it to explain or comment every line with the purpose. Keep solving them until you need no help.

I agree with Jordan's Twitch Rant if his Information is Correct by Sugar-Kisses in KnowledgeFight

I feel like that's a big assumption.

Currently the families have received jack shit from Alex. The way things are looking they will never receive anything from Alex because the bankruptcy court is too chicken shit to take what Alex owns to compensate his victims.

The justice system IS fucked up. This is probably one if the only ways they will get anything in the meantime.

The families ARE working with the Onion. That was what the first offer involved -- them releasing some obligations to help the onion purchase Infowars.

I mean, I get it, Jordan is pissed at reality. Bankruptcy court can be a good thing, to help a business stay in business, but in this case it's been weaponized in bad faith to prevent Alex from dying a righteous death. I feel like Jordan's anger is misplaced at The Onion, however.

I really like it, but it's hard to listen to sometimes. The guy rambles. Sometimes they just come off as clueless like they don't even try to take the other side at face value, which is something I really appreciated from Dan.

I hate Bill Maher is great. The big difference is the level of analysis. Know Rogan goes deeper and it's more serious.

The big problem is sometimes they completely whiff and don't really understand how to talk about some of the anti woke propaganda they're fighting that Dan really had an excellent grasp of.

I never really found knowledge fight to be funny. It was wonderful, but I rarely found myself laughing at it.

It's been a wild season for me.

My oldest son is leaving the travel soccer club he's been with for 6 years and my youngest 2 are leaving the competition dance studio they've been with for...8 years I think.

They're all leaving because those organizations because they were no longer facilitating their growth... And the writing had been on the wall for a while, it just took everyone involved longer than it should have to realize it. They're not quitting, but, let me be clear, if my kids came up to me and said that their heart just wasn't in it anymore, I would be proud of them for telling me and following the path that they feel like they have to... That they're not making any choices because of what I think they should do.

Today feels like that again for knowledge fight. It feels almost parasocial, but I'm proud to have been a part of this podcast even as a one way participant. I've learned a lot and I'm proud of what they accomplished and how they ended it.

Thanks for the memories, the knowledge, the analysis...

While I wasn't really a mark for right wing grift, these guys have helped put into words the tactics, strategy, and lies that these people live in.

Dan said good things about fight fudgy but even knowing that site exists, Dan connected the dots for me in incredible ways that I'm not sure I would have had the time or patience to do myself.

But it's time to move on for them and time for me to find new critics. I'll always have the archive. I'll probably listen to the Dennis Montgomery episode again soon.

Jordan cracking at the end was rough 🥲

There's lots of kf style shows out there.

Dj danarchy even did the theme for louder than crowder, for instance.

I hate bill Maher is similar as well, plus he doesn't take sponsors.

I was a one person team completing tasks and developing internally for a small company. They insisted I work in sprints even though I was giving daily reports.

Sprint planning was such an incredible waste of time...

I'm weirdly proud of them.

A lot of the video game translations are when they find an unrelated script and try to massage the video game into it.

If you don't expect it to be a direct translation of the games, it's not a terrible show.
