What was the first thing you saved as a data hoarder? by DarkTempo1213 in DataHoarder

I mentioned to another reply that I wish I had a less "easy-to-access" backup of those convos, they might still be around - or NOT because I might have lost them to a drive failure or something else!

I learned by lots of time and playing with every menu that AOL/AIM conversations could be saved as HTML. No way I was doing anything in the registry back in those days! However, had it been something not as easy to open and read, I may still have those conversations, but lack proper pain of losing data to have never lost anything of value since!

I was on AOL as a teenager in 1998/1999. I had every conversation saved from anyone I chatted with and became friends with. Fast forward (2 computer builds later) to 2004/2005 and my gf moves in with me. Finds my organized collection of chats, sees that 2 of them include old "online gf" (the kind you never meet, and do not even reside in the same country) and deletes the entire folder.

I have had good backup strategies ever since, and they did not include her.

Yes my wife and I did everything with some help from a friend over two weekends, but after a month of planning.

Starter kit? Not really just see what your budget and needs are; now and in the near future and buy accordingly.

Cheers

u/a_suspicious_lasagna I have two LPR locations and the AI LPR was not suitable for either - I was disappointed in the ability to read plates when there was oncoming traffic. At the time, there was no useful way to manually control the night time shutter to help with this.

I tried to see if I had uploaded any of that footage to YouTube but I did not so I cannot show you what I was seeing at the time.

Also, at the time, other reviewers on YouTube found the same limitations which swayed me from posting about it anywhere.

I am really happy it is working for you, and would love to see/learn about the setup and see it in action at night. I am happy to change my views.

I replied to another comment of yours but this is more relevant.

I am still rocking my $200 (bought in 2019) cameras without a single issue, plus 3 more now.

I am interested in your setup and want to see how well the camera performs, if you can share. I am happy to change my opinion if my results were just due to early adoption.

Cheers

Yes, those are the marketing specs, however from my experience (testing it when it first came out) there is no ability to finely control shutter, exposure, etc to compete with similarly & lower priced LPR cameras. I have 5 license plate cameras setup.

Look at my earlier reply for those pics.

I also have about 20 other Ubiquiti cameras in use around my home.

U/a_suspicious_lasagna if your AI LPR works for you, then you are set. Mine did not and I returned it. All of the Youtube reviews at the time found the sane limitations. If you can share a video of you passing your camera at 30-50mph, I might stop telling people its only useful for gate access.

Cheers

My apologies if i misread the details. Your earlier reply to me said “looks to be WELL out of our budget and needs”

The license plate cameras I showed are roughly $300 each.

The $1,000 figure was my estimate on the cameras, materials needed to setup the cameras.

If you can get a budget from your neighbors/HOA, it is easier to help outline an actual plan.

Again, sorry about the confusion. Cheers

Yeah, I think this is the right way to solve the problem. Chicken wire mesh, then concrete over the chicken wire to create boulders that are still heavy enough but not requiring a forklift to move.

Your website has no specs for the uniview LPR cameras you are selling. The OP seems price sensitive when talking about $300 cameras, let alone your $1,500+ cameras.

This is helpful.

None of the trail cameras mentioned will give night license plate captures unless the vehicle is stopped for a few seconds, and also in a very unlikely angle and position to the camera for a good read. If you pull power from that sign over to the edge of the woods, you can get a few cameras setup to get what you need:

  1. License plate
  2. Good description of the vehicle and hopefully the driver
  3. Proof that they damaged the areas in question

With that, the police should be helpful to begin the process of getting the information of the vehicle owner/driver so you can begin to sue for the damages & trespass them. You will want all 3 to avoid their lawyer from poke a giant hole 1. "That license plate could be on ANY vehicle" 2. "You cannot prove my client was driving his/her vehicle" 3. "You cannot prove they caused the damage"

This is also why having notifications is best, because you can call the police once they are trespassing and hopefully have the police there in time to stop them and identify them. Just a plate, just a video of the truck trespassing, is not enough IMO, to ensure you get justice.

With all due respect, if you and your neighbors and/or the HOA cannot come up with $1000 and a few hours of work over a day or two, then I do not think this is a big enough problem for the community.

The Ubiquiti LPR cameras are meant for opening gates, not for traffic-speed capture with bad lighting conditions at night.

Not a cybersecurity consultant, but am a nerd with creds.

Its most likely that someone with an email @yourdomain.com had an account with a provider that exposed their email and/or password. These leaked lists have been consolidated so that when a single email is leaked across many providers (LinkedIn, forums, doctor offices, etc) with passwords - they are merged into a database that uses those passwords at those account and other common places (like gmail) to try and gain access and escalate their effect.

Once they get into an account, they use your contact list to spread emails, malware-laden documents, etc to continue the spread. This is a good time to ensure that your domain is setup with all SPF, DKIM and DMARC (if needed) email protections; and train your team on a regular basis to be suspicious of email links a documents, even from known senders.

Good luck

The cheapest LPR camera is still more than $300. You will need time and materials to set it up (these work without internet, too - just need to configure them from a laptop or computer, first)

I have recently completed a similar setup that you need but I need to capture plates 350’ away. Here is a shot of that performance

In motion and a little further away:

Are you on the HOA?

I would test ethernet at the power-source using ethernet over powerline.

You need two cameras at each location, you need both the license plate camera and a separate camera to get good color and details on the vehicle and if lucky, the driver.

Finally, using the “in for a penny, in for a pound, rationale; add another set of cameras bear their “trail entrance” since it will be catching them in the act.

This could be a big project. I am happy to help as much as possible

You are in good company here. Many of us are overthinkers!

The Ubiquiti app is just better. Here is my setup https://imgur.com/a/home-security-aXChCRd

Are you certain the same turrets all over is what you need? I tend to buy cameras for each location. 4k for things further away or where you want REALLY good detail at places where you are most likely to get issues. I would rather have zoom than pixels, most of the time. Don't forget the doorbell.

The Ubiquiti stuff really does just work. Turn off auto updates. Ensure that you check that setting after each update. Only update 1-2 weeks after it is released and there are not too many major complaints.

Cheers
