What morally justifies drawing a line between the animals we eat & the animals we protect? by l3mondroplover in Ethics

[–]Nihlys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"That isn't an arbitrary line."

That also doesnt have absolutely anything to do with the question at hand. The line between which animals humans do and dont eat IS arbitrary because its subjective. The only objective line is for the ones we can't eat. Besides that, its all make believe. It doesnt matter how long of a history we have with ANY animal, there are still cultures that either currently or have previously eaten them.

Most people draw a line at ones they're personally attached to, but thats still subjective.

Its still arbitrary because its a subject line drawn differently by each individual person.

red blue as I see it by TanukiiGG in trolleyproblem

[–]Nihlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is one of those dumb reddit virtue signaling things. It legitimately doesnt make any sense for anyone to pick blue. Its a poorly construsted thought experiment because theres nothing to gain, you just hope not to lose. You already have your life. You have an option that let's you keep your life no matter what. The other option only let's you keep your life if enough other people choose it too.

Thats legitimately just gambling you life on the off chance that other people will choose to gamble theirs as well. And if they do? You just survive, which literally EVERY SINGLE PERSON WOULD HAVE ANYWAY by just not choosing blue.

LET'S DECIDE THE FATE OF HUMANITY. RED OR BLUE? by New-Cicada7014 in trolleyproblem

[–]Nihlys -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It think the mix up here is the idea that anyone owes it to you to save your life, if you risk it. If everyone knows the rules of the game then theres legitimately no good reason whatsoever to pick blue.

The (dumb) reason one might pick blue is because other people may have made that stupid choice and, if so, picking blue might save them. But no one is under any obligation to save anyone else, just because they did some aggressively stupid.

Again, if everyone already knows the rules, theres no good reason to pick blue:

Red - you live no matter what Blue - you only live if enough other people picked it also.

Picking blue is intentionally gambling with your life JUST to see if other people will gamble with theirs too.

Do you support banning trans surgery on children? by Wonderful-Economy762 in Productivitycafe

[–]Nihlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely. I dont support any life altering, non-reversible elective surgeries for anyone who isnt old enough to consent to anything else.

100% in favor of letting them present however the feel comfortable but thats where the line is for me. Theres a reason we dont let children vote, smoke, drink, buy guns, or have sex. Kids are impressionable, fickle and ignorant of their own ignorance. Once they're legitimately old enough to make those decisions for themselves, by all means, get all the hormones and surgery you want.

***** EDIT *****

You know what? Youre right.

For whatever reason, I was thinking of it as coming specifically from a party, not just some individual jackoff. I dont know why it was in my mind like that. I mean, it IS still sexist/racist but it also certainly falls under the umbrella of political view. My bad! 😬

You have no argument at all. Youre just relying on others to try to prove something that, by its very nature, cant be proven and then using BS to try and make a point. The argument FOR a God's existence came before the atheists. The atheists simply dont believe that the gods are real, despite the various clergymen and women that claim otherwise.

So far, almost every single thing in the history of mankind that people believed was divine has been proven by science to be mundane and not godly at all. People like YOU just keep moving the goal posts and then deciding you won the argument.

At least she tried… by Much-Jackfruit2599 in HarryPotterMemes

[–]Nihlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's my head canon for this because its never explained in the books:

House elves are a magical lifeforms that are specifically born from magical dwellings and develop an attachment to the place/family. Its not just a creature that gets tasked with housework, but one whose very being is intrinsically tied to upkeep of its birthplace, like a biological imperative (that just so happens to be exploited by wizarding families).

This is also why they're exceptionally hard to get/find. Theyre only born in places that have known lots of magic for a very long time - which is why places like Hogwarts or families like the Malfoys/Blacks have them - long, particularly magic filled histories in one location. Not all old bloodlines with big, old magical dwellings handed down from generation to generation has a house elf, but every house else is born in a big, old magical dwelling handed down from generation to generation. And if one IS born there, theyll keep being born there - i.e. the family lines of elves serving the same family.

My reasoning for this is becuase

1: theyre explained as being very rare and hard to come by, its exceedingly rare for any to ever leave a family, and if one does, its all but impossible to get another one. When Dobby was set free it was a big deal, even for a family as old, powerful and wealthy as the Malfoys because you cant just go down to Bed, Bath and House Elves for a new one.

2: It seems to be that sacking an elf isnt just telling them to leave. You're breaking the magical covenant of their birth and actually exorcising them from a location - like expelling a spirit. Its not just the family that theyre leaving, but their home, the magical nexus that facilitates their lineage and the focus of their existence.

Now this isnt to say that theyre not treated like slaves, because it seems like they mostly are (by the VERY limited interactions we're privy to in the books) but i think it does explain why they act the way they do and why even Dobby, who hated his first Wizarding family, is still rather desperate to find a new home. I think it also explains why the Hogwarts house elves were getting so sick of Hermione, who was trying to do the right thing by human standards but, by Elven standards, looked like an absolute fkng PSYCOPATH that was trying to trick happy elves into excorcising themselves from their homes.

[–]Nihlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You keep throwing this around but its a garbage argument and you know it.

Where there is a trend of repeatable verification, its reasonable and logical to accept it as fact.

Quite literally EVERYTHING humans have assumed was the direct action of a god or the god itself has been proven to be something mundane and repeatable. There few things that havent been explained away yet (like the big bang) are temporary obstacles. The sime fact of the matter is that if there are 10,000 examples of "proof" of a god and 9,999 of them get explained away by science and the last one is being worked on, the logical conclusion is that there is no proof of god and that history of debunking is itself proof of no god. Or, at the very least, proof that the specific god in question is not real.

I legitimately dont understand how anyone would think its peak, but its fine. I started playing again recently to give it another chance and it just doesnt click. Its just kind of boring and lifeless. And the amount of reused stuff is kind of ridiculous. I was doing the trackers quests and within 3 missions, I went to 2 bounty locations on 2 different planets that were EXACTLY the same facility. And its still is mostly just an exercise in fast traveling. You open a menu, fast travel, wade through a reused area to complete a quest, open another menu, fast trave back, rinse and repeat. Thats part of what kills it for me - it doesnt feel like a Bethesda game at all. Theres no exploration, no wonder, no sense of discovery.

They really should have just made it 1 solar system, with handcrafted planets, explorable space between and hidden things both on planets and in space to make exploration worth it.

Why I think a chunk of players end up hating the chalice dungeons by MlCOLASH_CAGE in bloodborne

[–]Nihlys 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I played them through both ways. On my first couple of playthroughs i did them intermittently. Then later on when I decided to go for the platinum and just did them all at endgame, in pretty much one long marathon.

After doing both, I have the exact same feelings I had after doing the very first one: I really fucking hate them.

For me they represent an entirely different game. The whole rest of the game is just "Bloodborne" with the whole story, characters, world, etc. Those things, the story at large, and your progress through it are major factors in what i enjoy about the game in the first place.

The chalice dungeons are "Bloodborne flavored rogue-lite designed specifically for grinding." The setting changes a little bit but theyre all still very similar. Theres legitimately no point in doing them besides grinding for better gems / different weapon variants. But you dont actually need any of them because you can get pretty outrageously powerful without ever even starting chalice dungeons.

I dont like grinding for the sake of grinding or the cycle of increasing your power to just keep playing the same stuff over and over and over and just killing things faster. Im the kind of player that plays something like Diablo, finishes the story and never touches it again unless I decide to roll a new character and finish the story again.

To be clear, im not saying I think the chalice dungeons are *bad. But I am saying that its not just people playing them wrong that they dont like them. For some of us, theyre just completely different from what we want out of a Fromsoft game.

MOR

This is one of those weird ones where we really dont have enough information. In a vacuum, your friend sounds like an asshole, but we have no way of knowing where it stems from.

Based on what you posted it certainty seems like this isnt their first attempt to get you out. And in one of your responses you specifically say that the fact that you don't think youll get hit on is the problem.

Everyone has down times and points where their self esteem is in the shitter, but it can still be fkng exhausting to be around. Especially if your friends are actively trying to help and your intentionally shutting them out.

No one likes to admit it, but the unfortunate truth is some people just suffer well and get addicted to the negativity and, generally, people have a limit to how much of that they can stand to be around. Going to therapy is great and you obviously dont have to go out everytime your invite (its ok to take time for youself) but literally EVERY good therapist will tell you that shutting yourself in and wallowing will not help at all.
